Daffodils have broken ground, Some just poking out, some (close to the house) about 3 inches tall, the grape hyacinth greens are perking up and a couple of tulips have just broken ground as well.

Sorrel is popping up.
And we're getting days in the 70s followed by days in the 30s followed by days in the 50s followed by... well, you get the idea.

Snowdrops and snow crocus are in full bloom. Pussy willow buds are fattening up.

Pushy willow buds are fattening up. Apt name, since they kept coming back and spreading after years of chopping them down. Had to dig out all the roots.

Autocorrect strikes again. gardendmpls, mine is well-behaved so far as is the one my mom has. I have some cuttings from last year that I'll soon transplant as well. Forsythia on the other hand can get out of hand fast. I've supplied just about everyone I know with starts and will be cutting some back severely this year. I planted some of the divisions along the driveway several years ago and there's nothing more magnificent when they're in bloom.

Forsythia...there's nothing more magnificent when they're in bloom. Yup... Especially in an en masse situation...

Long, rolling thunder and a downpour. In a few days it will be back in the 30s and 40s.

Wheelgarden, I used to have a group of mourning doves who sang as they wandered beneath a Colorado Blue Spruce (too) close to the house. After I had to have it cut down, the doves gradually disappeared and I rarely hear or see them. I enjoyed their calming cooing; I hope someday they return. There's been some activity in the arborvitae, but I haven't heard birds other than Blue Jays in several years and I don't recognize the newcomers' songs. Only other signs here are the lilac buds which have endured through the winter, tightening up in frigid weather, and gradually spreading just a tiny bit in warm weather, which we had yesterday. Today the wind is roaring and beating up the trees again.

The mourning doves were out in the garden yesterday - not sure if that couple that nested on my deck years ago is still out there, but a couple of them don't really pay attention to me until I'm about a foot away! I set a water tray out for the birds on the side of the garden that I wasn't fooling around on, and they took advantage of that. It had been quite dry around here (until today!), though the ground was still damp, and there was something they were feeding on!

One of the Spring pastimes here is collecting maple sap and boiling it down into syrup. I tapped two trees the other day and so far have collected 8 gallons of sap. I set up my Nuwave induction cooktop out in the garage today and started boiling the sap. I have been freezing it until the end of the sap run but ran out of freezer space and need to reduce the volume to keep ahead of the flow. For me, it's just plain enjoyable to tap a tree and make my own syrup.

Also heard a frog today. Might hear him again tomorrow, then it will be too cold for him for a while.

This is not a good sign, but I saw, and killed my first mosquito of the year! I thought that I saw something hovering around, so I stopped what I was doing, and finally saw it, and waited for it to land, and as soon as it touched my leg, BAM!! I smashed it, surprisingly not bruising my leg. Gave me great satisfaction, killing that first mosquito.

Normally I would say spotting the first robin but they have been around this winter and not just a few...a bunch and in many areas around me. Nothing else yet but the snow is disappearing all over from the high temps today. Maybe the flowers will show soon.

Hubby heard peepers last night and I could hear the frogs/toads in the pond this morning.
