Well we had some pretty substantial (and not forecasted) rain last evening, but I should be able to accomplish something outside today. I'll probably start with carting a tote of weeds out of the old garden and picking more peppers to chop and freeze. The rose-scented geranium has become a trellis for a wayward volunteer pole bean and needs rescued as it will be coming inside soon. Otherwise it will probably be a clean-up-and-do-what-I-can sort of day.

Technically, for tomorrow...remove some of the older tomato plants, weed around the green beans, seed cilantro, carrots, lettuce and arugula, harvest Anaheim's and misc tomatoes then water. Clean the chicken pen.

It seems so strange to me that you can grow year 'round Latitude33 , not that I wouldn't like to learn to do that. But it's so out of my realm of experience. Lucky you.

It may seem like a blessing, and most years it is. But sometimes a break is needed when burn-out hits. Unfortunately here (socal) it doesnt always coincide with the 'right' seasons.

But sometimes a break is needed when burn-out hits. I get that. I am always so ready for the break- I just wish it was a shorter. I suppose you could do a self imposed break, not based on the season or weather.

BTW, didn't get carrots or arugula sown yet. Did save a bunch of marigold and basil seed today! Weather is pleasant at the moment but expected to jump back up locally to 80s and possibly 90s. Just in time to extend tomato, pepper and squash harvest a little bit more...I need a break, where is my uke?

We're getting the same heat this coming week. And here I was enjoying the cooler weather. As for needing a break, me too. But just this morning I had to go out and critter-proof one of the last vigorous growing beds - a ground squirrel has been breaching the bunny fencing and making him/herself at home in the private salad buffet, totally destroying the happy cauliflower and cabbage plants. I had to cover the top with netting/wire, so I cobbled something together. Initially I had thought I would just let the critter eat them all and be done with it. But, no, garden responsibility kicked in again. Other jobs for the day: -water the blueberries -fill the big green can with stuff trimmed the past couple days.

Oh where to start?
I have one bed that is almost cleaned out and another that needs the tomato vines removed so may concentrate on those.
Need to decide where to overwinter the rooted boxwoods cuttings, so may make a nursery bed.
Already pulled one rain gauge and need to locate the other one which I believe is engulfed in the mayocoba beans. Pulled the gauge too late last year and it cracked.
May abandon all of the above and do something totally different (which is greatly possible).

it'5 95 and climbing... so, list or no list, I don't have to do anything outside today.

Is it fair to post after the job is pretty much done? Determined to enjoy my coffee in the garden this morning and had to find the way there with the flashlight on my phone. Relaxing on my sitting stone (in the back of the picture) and looking at those broken pieces of concrete blocks and thinking "what if.". That led to the two large stepping stones that I've had for over 25 years that were deposited in the garden after I located them in the old wildflower garden this spring. So my spontaneity led to arranging and raking back the mulch enough to situate them. Nothing level, nothing measured, but just laid out where they'll remain for the winter. In the spring I'll work on leveling them up if needed and will probably raise up the brick bean planter on the right to compensate for the sloping ground. So I guess I can say my job for today was to work on my sitting area beneath the bean trellis and have it completed by 8am. Edited to add: approximately 25 tiny mosquitoes were killed in the process. Love these 65 degree mornings and evidently so do they. Edited again to add: Kiddo was still asleep so raised the small planter on the left and added a row in front of the sitting stone. Life is good!

I love stones all patched together like that.

Like the stones, those always add a nice touch to garden spaces. We had cold weather for Halloween, but today in the upper 60’s and windy all day. Pulled up the gladiolus corms and they’re drying on the patio table and then will go into the basement for the winter. Last Christmas I received an amaryllis and there was a calendar reminder to get it out of the basement and pot it to see if it will bloom for Christmas. Still have one head of garlic to plant, I had to pause when we had our snow and cold last week.
