It's still earlyhere. I'd like to get several things done in the yard. After the morning garden walk, I saw several jobs that I'd like to get done. There are always lots, but these are the more urgent ones I'd like to work on today:
- bring up the empty large green can from the street and fill with already hacked out perennial grasses from beneath the Persimmon. - put up bunny fencing around the front bed with seriously chewed cabbage plants and Rudbeckia. Ack! - prune back spent flowers (statice, Nigella, calendula, feverfew, etc) from front area - aka bunny habitat - and save seed from the spent Nigella
As usual, there is lots more that needs doing, but working on these 3 tasks would make a very good day.
What's on your today's 'to do' List?

Drag out the grill and clean it up in preparation for Salmon, beets and maybe some new potatoes this evening Haul the totes and trash cans of weeds away. Loaded the cart last evening in preparation. Move all the large pots from the backyard under the shade trees in preparation for planting some leftover tomato plants.

Been checking the pumpkin vines daily for squash bug eggs. Need to do that today. No watering, it's supposed to rain later on today, we'll see. If it doesn't,put that on tomorrows list. Need to scrub one of the bird feeders. It's made of little pebbles and it's getting icky. 91 degrees with a feels like temp of 99. Not really a lot you can do out there.

I had a really good day today. My list changed as I worked, of course. I ended up doing lots of trimming, pulling, digging up, and best of all, installed 2 bunny fences. That's 4 out of the 5 front beds now fenced. One of the beds will be used for some of the Zinnias seedlings, when they get a little larger.
I also dead-headed about half the Scabiosa, and saved some of their seeds. They are such pretty colors. White, pink, light/medium/dark reds, and lavender. Also saved some sweet pea seeds.

Still have a few pots to move and potatoes are still relatively small so didn't harvest them, but otherwise I accomplished yesterday's jobs.
Today I need to deal with strawberry plants
Plant comfrey divisions and make some root cuttings as well
Empty out those containers and rejuvenate the soil

Today's tentative list: - cut back and dry the catnip growing in pots. (edit - it would be better to not sort and trim catnip sprigs in the presence of the cats, lol.) - Move up the latest Zinnia seedlings now living in small soil blocks - Further clean-up in one of newly bunny-fenced beds in front. Maybe spread some compost/mulch if time/energy permits. Looks like the coastal overcast is burning off early today. It's just after 8:30am.

Prune back the silver lace vines (rapid grower that if you blink they are creeping into trees, eaves, etc) and cut down catmint to the ground so that it can put out its second growth and bloom. Then it's indoors for the cooler environment.

- Finish clearing out one of the beds in front to get ready for Zinnia seedlings. Need to be ruthless. - Make some small mesh snail barriers to help protect Zinnia seedlings. - Spread compost/mulch in this bed. - Make some soil blocks to sow Celosia, Statice, and more Zinnias for a later crop. Plus sow zucchini and a few sunflowers in larger cells. As long as the heat mat is going to be on, why not make use of it?

Finish clearing out one of the beds in front to get ready for Zinnia seedlings. Need to be ruthless. I have one job today. This one from yesterday's list. Yesterday I got distracted by sowing seeds - a favorite task. And the weather. And indoor tasks. But I really need to get this bed done cuz the Zinnia seedlings are ready to go out. The day looks lovely and clear, but that is how yesterday started... then the fog rolled in for most of the day. Pleasant temp, just gloomy.

I just finished installing four concrete anchors and four more posts for the vineyard. Decided to use the gas-powered auger instead of the clamshell digger but wound up using both to get the holes just right. The end anchors will be 30" deep holes filled with concrete with a metal screw anchor embedded in it. We talked about the vineyard's current size and decided to add another 16' in length to it before installing the anchors. Grapes are one of those crops this area is noted for and one of my favorites.

martywny, when daughter lived in Connecticut, we drove through your area. The fragrance of ripening grapes was delightful. That trip would have been in 2006 (I think).

Lots of little jobs in the front, and it's a lovely day. I see fog over the ocean - not sure if it'll roll in later. -put up bunny fencing around the smallest bed in the front, then plant zinnia seedlings (Queeny) and cover with anti snail netting. -Plant more Zinnia seedlings in the larger bed reworked yesterday - I put in about 10 yesterday, and with snail cuffs and bait, they survived with nary a bite to this morning. I found 3 snails (RIP) in there this morning which is fewer than usual. -move up cauliflower seedlings. Make labels 1st.
