Today started with compiling some recipes for a class I'm teaching tomorrow. That was interrupted by a phone call from school as kiddo had coughed until she vomited. So we picked her up and off to the doctor we went as I definitely didn't want to approach the weekend with a sick kid again. Doctor prescribed a steroid for three days and a breathing treatment but said kiddo seems to be on the mend. Also told me that they're seeing lots of flu and bronchitis lately.
So back home I'm still tweaking recipes and mixing some seasoning blends. I was originally to teach this class nearly two years ago when I developed the bad case of poison ivy and it's been requested so... I already requested that my mom's class and mine be staggered so that if I have a coughing fit, she can jump in and take over.

breezygardener, there's wineberries on my in-laws property and I came really close to transplanting some here until I read how invasive they can be, so be prepared. Decided to just go there and harvest a few when we remember. Plus we're still working to eradicate the white poplar that we were given as silver maple saplings 20 years ago.

I read how invasive they can be, so be prepared. Yes, I've read some about that as well. But honestly - I lived my entire life pre-1994 on Long Island, & picked Wineberries from the same darn patch in the same darn location all that time & never saw them pop up anywhere else in the area. And they are absolutely delicious & blow regular raspberries right out of the water. So until/unless they're totally banned, I'm going to grow them!!

I did something I wasn't looking forward to, and wasn't on my list of things to do - went shopping for a new recliner for my living room. My old one, that didn't owe me anything, had one of those brackets that the back slides down into, come apart, and it wouldn't be fixed, even with a thin piece of spacer wood. I thought the spacer had it fixed, but after sitting in it for about an hour, the left side came apart again, and the part of the bracket on the left causing the problem, could not be replaced, while the ones on the back could be replaced, for just $13 a pair! Oh well...
I did get a bunch of leaves ground up yesterday, and got the large leaves off of the garlic row, then the ground up leaves back on the row, which is better. The ground up leaves don't blow away easily, like the larger ones, and leaves were blowing away a lot today, as the wind was wicked!

pepperhead212 , even my shredded leaves can blow away sometimes. I use a thin sprinkling of long pine needles over the leaves and that holds them well.

I wish I had a source for pine needles, besides traveling to the pine barrens! Used to get some from my Mom's house, but that was 7 years ago and longer.

Got leaves removed from front yard yesterday morning. With overnight fog and wet ground, they do not dry out enough to vacuum and shred. So to the street they went. Spent the rest of the day putzing, made smoothies to freeze, laundry and some hand quilting. Been watching a series I found on Roku, 4 seasons of Coroner.

pepperhead212, I feel your pain re: recliners. I'm about due for a new one, the seat is sagging badly, making it difficult to get up from. Wonder if I could get it fixed? It's a LazyBoy. I briefly shopped for a new one last week but gave it up.

From Sunday mid morning till Tuesday evening we received 2 inches of much needed rain. Wednesday started with an early morning oil change for sweetheart’s car, I then got the holes drilled in my standing drain pipe needed to complete the newly installed drainage tile project. Thursday morning first thing sweetheart went to the airport to pickup her life long friend that will be visiting us for the next few days. Things dried off enough in the afternoon to mow and pick up a copious amount of leaves that I added to the pile of well rotted horse droppings. Friday as we were eating breakfast one of sweetheart’s sons called and needed some plumbing items picked up and delivered to a job about 90 miles away so I quickly fed the horses and was on my way. On my return trip home I picked up a load of 1 1/2 river rock needed to complete the tile job. I think that about covers it…..

I felt kind of lazy yesterday. Walked. Came home and cleaned up the kitchen, then took a nap at 0930!! Woke up with a sudden thought to go to Iowa Falls, there is a Christian women's thrift store there, haven't been there in over 1 1/2 yrs. It's 40 miles away. So went. Prices are still the same. $1.00 for pants/jeans. $.50 for tops, sweaters, shirts. Coats $3.00. I spent at whopping $6. Since I went later, it wasn't crowded like it is at opening. And they have expanded the store to 4000 sq ft. Very nice. One could easily spend hours there looking around. Then went to HyVee and got butter $2.99/limit 2. Then to furniture store up town to look at recliners, all they have is LazyBoy. Nice old guy and his sons own it and an auction house. He tends the store on his seated wheeled walker. I didn't make a decision. Headed back across town and stopped at HyVee again for more butter, 4 lb. will last me LONG time. Then Walmart before I headed home. Nothing planned for today, but not to worry, the day will plan itself!! Tomorrow I go to insurance agent in town re: old people insurance.......... After that I may go to Cedar Falls to a more reasonably priced furniture store that also carries LazyBoy, and last I knew, free delivery and set up. And now that 3 months has lapsed since having Covid, I can go get the booster and annual flu shot.

You're like a modern-day Job. Thank God not that bad. No boils yet. As you get older, you realize this is life and experience and faith make it easier to handle. My brother and I are doing what is called sitting shiva- sitting on low chairs for a week while people come and talk with us or even just sit quietly with us if we want. Still sending my brother to his day program during the week, but he is home in the evening when most people come. My daughter arranged that family, friends and neighbors provide all the meals. She and another daughter came over and cleaned the house and covered the mirrors and she checks on us several times a day. She also called a local organization and when we got in from the train they had already dropped off chairs, a long burning candle and a poster on which is printed with the traditional phrase people say to morners on departing (I have trouble remembering the Hebrew , also, but as a mourner I only need to add "amen").

Did my class yesterday and was a bit dismayed to see that by the end, everyone in our club had already left, leaving mom and I to clean up. There was a member from another club still there and thankfully she jumped in and helped. Today I'm physically drained and spending most of my time working on the embroidery piece from the class I took yesterday. Today my butt is dragging again. Still have laundry to catch up and glad tomorrow is a school holiday as that gives me another day.

Errands and must do's first part of the weekend. Driving to CA on Friday so taking care of vehicle needs, etc. Pulled my lackluster/under performing zucchini plants and Asparagus beans. Was gifted a couple days ago with several Tohono Iltoi onions which are native to the area and very shallot-like. Planted some now and will plant more later. I'll take some to CA and share with my gardening family there. Also planted some red cabbage starts I had purchased three weeks ago and frankly forgotten about. Truth be told, most of the edible plants at the sale were too small to transplant when sold. Sowed sugar snap peas in my raised bed at the house. Weather forecast for the week is looking stable so I'll slip over to the CG when I can and see what trouble I can cause there.
