After our deep freeze last night (19º!) the rest of the paper birch and hawthorn leaves fell (quite a lot) so I blew them into another huge pile. Was going to vacuum/shred them and I couldn't figure out how to change the attachment on the blower/vacuum. This is not new. I often times can't figure out how many things work, mechanically. When Q got home he made the swap and I am read to shred tomorrow.
Vacuuming on hold, I switched to cutting back frozen plant matter that had turned to mush. Spent about 2 hours in the gardens. The most I have been able to do since the vax, 5 days ago. I was really tired after 2 hours, but thrilled that I was able to work for 2 hours.

Party at school was awesome and kiddo was really into it this year. She spent at least an hour sorting and organizing her haul once we were home and I asked if she'd like to go trick or treating and she said yes. It was her first time and we went to the community building nearby where they were having a trunk or treat and she saw many of her friends. From there we stopped at the local grocery store and fire department before heading back home for more treat organization. She's fascinated with the many rings as they've gained a prime spot on her windowsill and everything else was sorted. I admire her willpower as she only had two pieces of candy total!
Got a call from kiddo's advocate updating me on tomorrow's meeting and letting me know she wasn't happy with the situation and was preparing a list of amendments to current IEP that need to be implemented. I spoke with kiddo's teacher today and conveyed how pleased I am that she's going the extra mile and actually working one-on-one with kiddo. In the past there's been two teachers that always tried to include her and two that acted as if she were an inconvenience, but this is the first time a teacher has went above and beyond.
As for gardening, I scanned through MIGardener's new introductions and was thrilled to find Peacevine cherry tomato listed. Many years ago (mid 90s) I treated Mom and Grandma to a tour of a local organic garden ran by a very colorful and eccentric lady. On our tour she stopped and handed us all a cherry tomato. Well Mom and Grandma both looked at me with a grin as they knew I didn't like tomatoes and wondered what I'd do with it. I popped it into my mouth out of politeness and was pleasantly surprised. I called the lady back later to inquire about the variety as the name had escaped me and she said it was Peacevine and she acquired it from Seeds of Change way back when they actually had a catalog. I grew it for a few years and then they quit offering it. I've found the seed a time or two since but neglected to order as shipping was twice as high as the pack of seeds. So I'm hoping to add it to my tomato growing regiment for 2025.

Kiddo woke up about midnight with a fever so she stayed with hubby while I went to meeting at school. It was pretty short and to the point. We meet again in two weeks to finalize everything. I'm guessing kiddo has the flu as it's been going around and I've been waiting for both of us to be well enough to get our flu shots. She's slept most of the day and of course I'm not feeling so great at the moment, so I have a feeling we'll spend tomorrow snuggling and taking care of each other. Other than teaching a class next weekend my only other commitment is operating the Christmas store at school in December. I turned down an offer to be on a nominating committee for officers and the world didn't come to an end.

Wow, I slept in this AM . It was almost 9am when I woke up. Unheard of (except when I was much younger and lived a different lifestyle). Didn't eat breakfast until 11. Then made a quick trip to town to pick up a book on hold at the library. Swung by the PO here in the village to mail off a donation . I put another 2 hours in , cleaning up the yard . Vacuumed/shredded a huge pile of leaves and moved a lot of it to the veggie garden, started blanketing perennial beds. Hoping to get garlic planted tomorrow.

Hard freeze last night, broccoli looked wimpy but after a while it was OK. Picked what was there along with the rest of the kale.
Ended up going to hospital yesterday and taking step mom home. My brain was so tired when I got home. Getting her meds straight in her head was a challenge, a couple of med changes. Then moved on to "fixing" their medicare advantage choices......she had chosen one that would require her to change all drs and hospital. Explained to her that it would not be a good idea since all her drs know her, and she and Dad have many of the same drs. With a call to their agent, they are now both on the same plan. Then to explain it all do Dad, that was another challenge. I got rid of all the info they had gathered, mailers, etc. and threw them out. I know after I left they would have gotten them out and confused themselves all over again. The agent has my number in case they call to change AGAIN.....Through it all I maintained my patience......
Finally home at 6:30 last night. Ate and sat on the couch and was out like a light.

First and foremost thank you all for your support for sweetheart during this difficult time. Her emotions have been up and down but she’s working through it a little bit at a time. Today is sweetheart’s birthday and even though we had planned to attend our grandson’s football game 3hrs away I’m feeling it might be best if we stay close to home as her kids are planning to be stopping in. With that in mind, and heavy rains in the forecast starting tomorrow, I think I’ll put that excavator to use and dig in that tile that I’ve been wanting to and watch the game on tv later this afternoon. Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers.

Yesterday was a no gardening day. Went to town, stocked up on bird seed, suet cakes, and groceries, got my annual flu shot, spent a boatload of money and came home.

Started out doing the first of month bookkeeping and bill paying.
Then good day in the veggie garden today. Planted 95 garlics. The 2025 season has begun! Fed 4 of the 5 beds, layering a sprinkle of used coffee grounds, a bunch of compost, topped with about 3 inches of shredded leaves, and a light layer of pine straw on top to keep the leaves from blowing away. all wrapped up cozy for the winter. Didn't have the juice to finish the last bed. Tomorrow.

My sister went to the emergency room a few weeks ago with Afib. She had been ignoring chest pressure and respiratory trouble for the week before that. After a three day stay they sent her home, but after a few days she was readmitted. Her heart was not pumping right and she went into organ failure. They took several days to come up with a treatment plan, although no diagnosis. She began to improve after they started dialysis and she was moved out of the ICU Friday, only to crash later in the day. They couldn't resusitate her. My daughter came by to let me know (it was after the Sabbath candlelighting when we do not answer the phones). Tomorrow, my son and daughter will be coming over to help me break the news to her twin brother, my ward, who is mentally and physically disabled. Just reminding everyone that signs of heart problems in women are often different from those of men and may be less noticable. Pay attention and don't wait a week before checking them out. By then the damage could be too great to overcome.
