I packed up my trusty weed whacker and four fully charged batteries and cruised around the yard, trimming around trees as I went. Then on to the raised beds in the garden area. All three raised beds are suffering grass takeover. The middle bed is dedicated to sweet potatoes only and I'd really like to see some production in that bed. My garden golf cart is just the right height for me to drive up to the edge of the bed and work from that. I found out yesterday that I can fit the golf cart between bed two and bed three. When sitting on the cart, the grass is above my head At one time, I thought my cart was wedged between the two beds.....how was I going to get out of that? Never fear...I got out of that mess and got the sweet potato bed about two thirds weeded before I succumbed to the heat. Bed number 1 has a tarp over it, but still has grass at the edges. Bed number three has two generations of turnips, some kale and kohlrabi in the south end. The north end is ...yup, more grass. Really want to get it under control before they set seed. I think I'm going to have to use a potato fork to pry the grass out of bed three. Tugging and pulling from a seated position doesn't offer a lot of strength. And I'd like to put out more kale for a fall planting. Did I tell you you how beautiful the soil in the raised beds is? And the tomatoes need tied up. Even though they are on cages, they are trying to escape.

And I started "chewing" my way into the flower garden. In spite of the neglect, some of the flowers have never looked better. The tall white phlox "David", is loaded with bloom...it is such a workhorse. And the Stargazer type lilies are loaded. I have three of them planted close together and they are putting on quite a show. Made me smile to see them. If the Clematis bloomed, I missed it. It blooms every year, so I am assuming that I forgot to look.

You are one dedicated gardener. And you are moving past your limitations- one at a time. Love it! I wish there was a photo of you on the golf cart, whacking at the weeds (

Holy Cow!! I'm not on crutches and I'm not that ambitious. I have a weedy section I should be taking care of but the mosquitoes are so bad I keep putting it off. Maybe you'll be my inspiration to go weed whack them.

the mosquitoes are so bad I keep putting it off. Our skeeters were something fierce a few weeks ago....but not right now. We may be in between "crops".

I would say that you definitely fall into that category! The mosquitos are not that bad here but the HEAT and HUMIDITY are keeping me in the house right now. I just can't stand it, it's really draining.

When I lived along the Rio Grande, the skeeters were ferocious. (generally they are rare in our arid climate) I didn't know how to handle them. I was not prepared.
Then I figured out a way to be out with them without putting a lot of chemicals on my body and having them in my face. I got a huge piece of netting and draped it over my wide brimmed hat (with a hat band holding it in place. The wide brim held it out from my body and the netting came down past my hips. I wore long pants and I was covered. It worked great. I hate having those buggers flying in my face and buzzing my ears.
