It is usually 3 weeks from scaping to digging. This year, I just don't know.

Yes, this has been a strange year, even for garlic. I had some hardneck garlic - Metechi - killed by the extreme cold winter (how could it have been colder than Canada, where much of this is grown?). At least I assume it was the cold; it was on one side of a double row with a T-tape running down the middle, and Music was on the other side, and had almost 100% come up, as did the Estonian Red in the same rows, all covered with about 4" of ground up leaves. 6 of 46 of the Metechi came up, and still looks a little weak, compared to the other two. This has been a favorite variety of mine for years, and this is the first time this has happened with any variety - I've only had some that didn't grow well because it didn't get cold enough!
My garlic all has its scapes, though they haven't straightened yet. I usually start thinking about harvesting around 7-4, and they look like they're on that track.

the ones in my beds are over wintered hold outs form last fall!
no scapes, or if they did, I pulled them long ago
the leaves are starting to turn brown, and the cloves appear to be separated.

If the cloves are separating, pull them now. They are overdone.

They will still taste good- they just don't store as well/long, once they start to separate.

What kind of things do you do with the scapes?

well, when I went yester, maybe they're not separated, I tried to pull one, and it's pretty stuck too, so I left them in...

Red, you should DIG up not pull up your garlic. Pulling can damage the heads or break off the stem. They don't pull up easily like onions.

Just did my first round of garlic harvesting yesterday - about 1/4 of it had turned brown and laid down

I just read on another thread that you harvested 10 pounds of scapes? Woo Hoo! I'm asking for a pic from you to show others. Not quite 10 lbs., closer to 7.

I use them in stir frys, tossed into a salad, etc Most anywhere I would use garlic I tried a scapes pesto last year but it was too strong for my taste (and I love garlic)

I usually cut the scapes into inch pieces and freeze them for use in winter soups.
