doesn't that mean California poppies are soon to arrive too? Yes, about the same time. I have a Cal poppy in the front garden blooming now. Yesterday friends coming from down south showed me a photo they had just taken of a quite dense hillside of bloomig poppies. It's Spring!

I've been thinking of trying some poppies here since deer don't like them. The little wild "red poppies" don't bloom until late April/early May around here.

Saw the first pea pods finally. The golden yellow ones from BC were the first to set pods. Also harvested some carrots. Both are fairly late but the winter was unusually cold.

Saw the first male cardinal yesterday, while I was out there. A couple weeks since the first robins showed, and they are all over the garden now. And a couple weeks before those, the first mourning doves showed up, but I only see that pair occasionally now.

binnylou I definitely don't see cardinals year round, not even over at a friend's place, that is basically in the woods, and only a block over from here is that creek, with the wooded area on both sides. And they are not some of the earliest to appear, as I noted.

Honeybees!!! Was outside this morning opening up my little greenhouse & heard a low "hum" nearby. Turns out it was dozens & dozens of buzzing pollinators all over my "Louisa" weeping crabapple that's currently in full bloom. Closer inspection revealed that amongst all the different buzzers, were quite a few Honeybees. I haven't seen even ONE around here since 2020, so this was very heartening.
Also saw my first cluster of "gold" Goldfinches. (In the Fall the males morph into the more subdued colors of the females - changing back to bright yellow in the Spring.)

breezygardener, that is good news. Our honeybees survived the winter and have been out the few times the temps were above 55.
