First hazelnuts ever on my old hazelnut bush next to the growlery. It's about time...it bears catkin flowers every year, but this is the first time I've spotted little filberts on it. Now, if I can just keep the squirrels out..."ha, ha," said the squirrels, "we've been waiting, too."

Picked first cantaloupe. I got it before the animals could. Pretty good tasting too. I have one more picked and a few more green ones on the dying vines. It's a short season variety called Minnesota Midget.

First copperhead of the year... plus it's mate... plus seven little ones! Thanks to our neighbor for suspecting there was a den and for assisting hubby in discovering it.

First cucumbers of the year! You're tied with me- picked my first one on Friday from one of the two plants that survived the chicken cucumber massacre. The newer plants haven't reached the trellis quite yet.

The first crocus is blooming today!
I always think of Peter when the crocus appear.
his poem....
surprise
First the storms of winter woke us,
Then the rains came down to soak us,
And now, before the eye can focus,
Crocus!

The first California Poppy is blooming in the front yard.
Whenever I see the first native Lupine blooming in Spring, I automatically want to call my mom and tell her. She's been gone for many years, but it's a sweet memory.

First bee of the year! It was valiantly foraging on a purple crocus-supposed to get colder tonight so I hope it's OK

Saw our first awakening groundhogs the other day. From their size, most likely two from last year's brood. I'm thinking they're wondering when this year's deck "salad bar" will be opening. . . .

If I'm remembering correctly, doesn't that mean California poppies are soon to arrive too? gianna,
