Saw the first Five-lined skink of the season (an adult breeding male) yesterday on our deck, & this afternoon an adult breeding female. In a few months there will be dozens of little babies skittering around.

Heard the first wild turkey gobbling off in the woods somewhere. Hopefully we'll get to see them displaying soon. They seem to enjoy our yard & the horse field for that. (The horses seem to find them amusing.)

Just saw my first Black rat snake of the season. Not very large - about 2' long - but extremely feisty. I touched it to get it to move along before our dog saw it, & it immediately coiled up & reared upright like a cobra. They do a lot of bluffing because they're not all that high up on the food chain around here. We've seen hawks carrying them off & even crows pecking at them, so they frequently try to make themselves look more dangerous than they actually are.

First garage snake of the year today. I keep a “diary” list of when and how many show up. I’ve been expecting them, and today is just the right temperature to bring them out. This one got away…next time…I hope.

No, breezygardener, we don’t kill them. They get put in a trash can, taken down the road, and get released…with the message of “don’t come back”.

I just made my first batch of mint tea yesterday! Dry and frozen mint isn't the same, and I always look forward to this starting again.

No mint, but I just enjoyed the first glass of ice tea…brewed last night and refrigerator cold. Refreshing…

Early this evening saw my first Purple Martin of the season - most likely a "scout".

First garden setback, of the self-inflicted variety... Trays of well-sprouted pepper starts of various varieties, left in an un-vented cold frame. All toasted and crispy. Dag-nabbit. Not too late to start more, so there's that at least. Stupid gardener.
