I posted this first in animals but didn't get any feedback. What do you guys with dogs use for flea and tick control? I was reading up on the flea and tick control products on line and the things I was reading were pretty scary. I saw Gardens Alive has a product call Bio-Essentials flea and tick control. Has anyone used this product? Help, I pulled 4 ticks off of Kaner the other day.

I walk my cat outside in my yard on a leash for awhile. The vet gave me the stuff(forgot the name) that you apply between the shoulder blades up near the neck where the animal(cat or dog) cannot reach. The chemical is absorbed in the skin so the tick needs to bite the animal first and they are supposed to die after ingesting blood with the chemical that was absorbed.

datgirl, we rely mostly on the chickens for tick control. Occasionally, we do use one of the name brand treatments as well. Have not tired Bio-Essentials

We are using a brand similar to Frontline, generic, that is applied to the skin. Usually do a collar, but with her regular collar and now a bark collar didn't want to add a third! There is an oral one that you can get from vet, don't remember the name. Just got a rebate offer for heartworm med and the one that controls fleas and ticks. The rebate is $50 but haven't really read it since we won't need any til December.
I know, the side effect list is similar to the ones you see on TV for new human meds. I wonder, why do they list all that stuff? I would never take any of those meds, but then I'm not on any. Most of the side effects are worst case scenarios and I guess they have to cover their butts, and the same is true in the animal field.
We haven't had trouble with ticks yet.

We use frontline for tick control but buy it at Costco because we save more than $20 per dose (3dogs) they get an oral one for the heart worm and it's a combo for another parasite prevention. Deer graze our property daily, so deer ticks are a problem. The single most effective thing that I've done is to use the bagger on the lawnmower...we have a day or two each month where we will find ticks...but the bagging of the cut grass has made more of a difference than anything else. FYI : I participated in a program last year that was done by the University of CT..where they left bait boxes around my property and there were treats inside so that the field mice had to brush aside swabs treated with roundup. The thought was that perhaps we can treat the field mice in target areas the same way dogs and cats are treated to breakdown the cycle of transmission. The box clicked a number counter so there was a running count of how many mice went thru and took the bait..then they were hoping that other mice in contact with the initial mouse would be treating others in their den. Those counters were clicking high numbers in the areas where I don't cut the grass. This should be a banker year with the buggers..damp, wet spring and hot, dry summer.

I hate using the chemicals. I try not to use big sprays on me so I hate to put them on my dog. Well, I ordered the Bio-essentials from Gardens Alive. It's supposed to work as well as Frontline by using essential oils. I'll try it and if it doesn't work and the ticks are really bad, I'll have to go for the other stuff. Thanks for the input, I'll keep you posted.

I think that's a good approach datgirl. Try the natural remedies first. Use the big guns, as the last resort, only if nothing else is working. That's how I approach my own health, as well

Yes, let us know how that works. I would like an alternative to the usual stuff too.

Ditto. Oldest Lab has had Lyme...needs titers to check for that periodically...

Well, I ordered the Bio-essentials and it should come this week. It says one application last a month just like Frontline or any of the others and one order is enough for multiple applications all season so I'm guessing 3 or 4 doses. It's listed for $24.95 but they had a sale going and I got it for $18.90 or something like that. I'll always still check for ticks and if it doesn't work I can always use the Frontline.

But how do you know until it is too late? I take personal responsibility for my health and I pay attention to my body and then chose the appropriate tool or modality. For me, it's about not being in a place of fear but in a place of empowerment. We are so blessed to have so many choices in how we care for our selves. We each have to choose what feels right for us. I don't really know what you mean by "too late". I think many- if not all-of us have known or heard of someone who had all the tests, seen their western dr regularly and then been diagnosed with i.e advanced terminal cancer. Was that too late? Or was it meant to be? Or was it bad luck? Is there really an answer? I feel if I make the decisions I feel comfortable with , then I am at peace.

I am coming from the point of view that at what point do you know whether it is effective. My understanding that the tick needs to bite to ingest the medicine. If carrying the Lyme disease, is it not transferred at that time? And with Lyme disease symptoms don't necessarily show up right away. My question is a scientific one. Here I am only considering the Lyme and heartworm ....nothing more.
I am sorry if it came across offensively. That was not my intent.
