Mumsey, my sister had a plot in the community garden. Returned bec she forgot her hand spade to find another picking her tomatoes and herbs. “oh I thought this was my plot…” Too many new gardeners use poison and overspray killed her flowers. It’s sad.

There are community garden plots in the next town that I drive past occasionally. They used to be maintained pretty well and always looked well kept. Went by today on the way to my CT scan and they were overgrown and neglected. Kinda sad. I don't know what happened and I don't know anyone that had one of the plots to ask.

I've asked hubby several times not to mow or trim in a certain section under the chestnut trees unless I'm here, as I have a few plants in and out of pots that need moved. So this morning I go out and he's using the weed wacker in that spot and can't understand why I got upset because he did it while I was here. Grrr... I explained that when I say that it means when I'm physically in the area protecting the plants from physical damage. He beat holes in several large pots and decapitated daylilies, a rose of Sharon, the mint I just potted up to share with friends, an iris, etc... I guess maybe that was his way of getting me in gear but not like there wasn't a myriad of other places that needed trimmed too. And then the coordinator of the community garden contacted a mutual friend and asked her to urge me to come back as I always kept my bed tidy and my husband and I were so good about mowing. Ugh! I've already turned down her offer of a different spot twice.

Maybe she should be as tenacious at getting people to take care of their plots............ I think the problem was that they messed up the plot numbers and someone else claimed her plot that she had worked on improving for years. Wouldn't give it back, either. Sort of like if they were repainting apartment doors and removed the numbers, then randomly reassigned the numbers to different apartments. Then, someone said they were sure your apartment was theirs, so they tell you to pick another apartment from what was left, even though all your furniture and stuff was still in your former apartment.

So the story the coordinator told me was that the numbers were taken off the beds and that's what messed everything up. Yet the lady that currently has my beds knew the number of her beds. So... If the numbers were removed, how did she know which beds she had unless she was told because the numbers still haven't been replaced. I stated my intentions to keep the same beds numerous times since last year. The coordinator evidently doesn't keep a written record of anything as she's constantly asking who has which bed. Unfortunately I'm not the first this has happened to. When I was there planting last year a lady showed up and was very upset to see that the beds she had tilled up two days before we're fully planted and that was another of those "someone got the numbers mixed up" explanations.
Also there's been an issue with deer and even though we all came together to discuss the problem, the coordinator refuses to fence the garden because fences are "ugly." Not one of us harvested more than a handful of green beans last year because the deer kept them mowed off. Two of my neighbors there said they would not be returning this year because of the deer.
I really hate to give it up as I felt I was improving my space and growing food for the local pantry too. But the thoughts of spending a few days pulling weeds just to get new beds ready is just more than I'm willing to tackle at the moment, especially since my old bed was nicely mulched last fall and would have required little preparation before planting. I truly believe the main reason the coordinator is trying to entice me to return is so that she doesn't have to worry about the mowing.
So I'm not really sad that I'm not returning as that gives me more time to concentrate on expanding my own garden and I'm really trying to cut back on other obligations. So in a way it's a good thing but I had big plans for those beds this year.

Ironically I happened to notice a post thanking the garden coordinator for her years of service at the community garden and suddenly realized she has stepped down. They have a meeting scheduled next week at 7pm which is an hour after I'll finish working the quilt show. Should I stick around for it or should I not? Hmmm....

Should I stick around for it or should I not? Hmmm.... Unless you want to go back to the utter incompetence & want to spend time reworking new beds, I would just let it go this year. You won't get your old beds back thanks to the rude creep who stole them, & you already know that they really only want you back because they want you to do the mowing (which you shouldn't be doing without some consideration). Let them flail through this year on their own & then see what happens there & how you feel about it next year.

I wasn't intending on going back this year but I would like to speak to the new coordinator and explain the situation in hopes that it never happens again. I'm lucky that I have a place to garden and although having two extra beds was great, I keep imagining the person who has no other gardening space at all. I'd hate to see that happen. In reality I'll likely be dragging by the time the quilt show ends and will just go home and collapse.
