My daughter wears the long manicured fingernails that are decorated differently every time I see her…… her dad isn’t impressed at all!!

They would last 3 minutes with me maybe. I remember a friend of mine was a nail tech and she offered to do my nails for my wedding . They drove me crazy all day. Broke a couple at the reception and picked the rest off that night, and they weren't even the long ones like we're talking about now.

I did the artificial nails once and like datgirl, a couple had come loose within a few hours. Definitely not something for a country girl who likes to put her hands in the dirt.

They wouldn't last on me , either. In fact when my own nails get past the tip of my fingers they often start to snag/tear. I wonder what the attraction is for those really long ones. They look like fangs to me, but obviously some find them irresistible.

They’re not for me…I consider my hands to be “tools”. When I see the long, decorated nails, I feel the individual is trying to send a message…”Hey, look at me. I don’t have to get my hands dirty”. Just my opinion.

binnylou , that reminds me of when I was growing a veggie garden in the front yard of the first house we lived in, because it had the most sun. Neighbors would walk by and make comments. One that really struck me was how they said they used to grow veggies but that in their culture it was a sign of poverty (because they couldn't afford to buy produce from the grocery store) and so when a family could stop growing their food and purchase it , it was a sign of affluence. This was 36 years ago. I wonder if that perception has changed, with succeeding generations.

I was working at the bank when I tried the nails. Typing on the keyboard was a challenge. I'm sure I'd get used to it after a while but I much prefer outside work

desertwoman, I think there's still a stigma with some. My brother-in-law from my first marriage prohibited gardening, drying clothes on the line, and secondhand clothing because he grew up very poor and to him that suggested poverty.

prohibited gardening, drying clothes on the line, and secondhand clothing Good grief!! I've been doing/using all of those things & have never lived in any situation that would remotely suggest poverty.

My brother's FIL would not eat any leftovers.
My own father would not eat either brown bread or home-made bread. But then baking was not mom's strength.
Sorry to ask, but for women with the really long nails, how do they keep 'personally clean', so to speak.

I had an uncle that didn’t eat meat nor eggs. But, he did eat a luncheon meat that had olives (?) incorporated in to it. The egg thing was because “chickens are dirty”.

I’ve got really strong nails. I’ve got working hands, mam. Ive got nail brushes at every sink. A nicely polished nail looks lovely. For the past 5 years or so I keep my nails quite short because I garden and have young grandsons who get dirty. When my nails grow long I have sensitivity in them that is similar to the skin in my fingertips. When I cut them back, that sensitivity is back in my fingertips. It’s weird. i can hold a thread between my nails and thread a needle when they are long. I often wonder if it’s the same way with others. It takes more time to keep your long nails clean which is why most people infood service use disposable gloves. But yuck. I must wash my hands 50 x a day and more if I’m baking. Long nails have to be cared for…over an inch…even more time. If they are long enuf to curl? Nope. Nope. Nope. Otherwise it’s a turn off hygiene wise.
