breezygardener,That's how I do it, but this lady would scan and put it down on the little side shelf. That's really odd. Like I said, all the self-checkouts around here won't allow you to do that. You can't scan another item until the previous item has been put in a bag (which sits on a weight-sensitive side table. There is literally no other place to put your items except in a bag, & you can't scan another item before you've done that. I've never seen a self-checkout around here that has it set up any other way.

breezygardener, I think our Walmart has a little shelf beside of the bagging area where I usually put milk or detergent after I scan it. I believe it's weight sensitive too. Now the Kroger self checkout is an absolute nightmare!

breezygardener,No here some people even put their things back into the cart and go over to a long counter and pack it up. I do know what you mean though, the Walmart is like you say,but I don't go to Walmart a lot. The one by us is pretty icky.

Here they're one step below setting off fireworks & an alarm if you don't put your item in a bag immediately after scanning. Wait a second too long & a loud voice starts repeating "PUT YOUR ITEM IN A BAG" over & over & over as if they're shaming you into it - lol!
Which is one reason why I never use self-checkout unless I have Mr. Breezy with me. I'm just too slow & find myself getting haphazard & frustrated trying to zip along like everyone else without having to listen to the computerized admonishment.

My new peeve is the Aldi checkout. You start scanning items. If you are not fast enough it says "scan your next item or finish and pay", or something to that effect. Annoying as heck. They want us to be as fast as their employed checkers and it's just not going to happen. Ever.

It's just a machine programed to prevent people standing there in a daze, not my mom being critical. Unless there is an electric shock involved, I can ignore it. Life's too short.

Unless there is an electric shock involved, I can ignore it. That reminds me that I always thought electric cattle prods should be standard equipment on all shopping carts, especially for those people who stand beside of their cart and block the whole aisle.

Stood behind a man who was placing his items on the end of the belt. I didn’t have a basket because I only needed3-4 items and I rested the gallon of milk down as the belt advanced, he said. “You are obnoxious.” I just smiled and shook my head. People are wonderful but they stink.

A pet peeve of mine - when women with very long, ornate (grotesque) fingernails prepare food in a video. They can't possibly adequately clean those things to a sanitary standard. I guess the long nails are supposed to reflect someone who is not a common laborer, or something. Maybe it's just me, but they indicate 'non-functional' and I'm repulsed. I'd rather watch a nice, clean murder mystery.

On a similar note, gianna, I can't stand those women with 15 rings on their hands sticking their hands in food on videos. There is absolutely no way those hands could be clean!
