I don’t normally cut and remove the Autumn Joy Sedum until Spring. Because they are up and growing quite early, I damage new growth when removing old growth. So, I did the deed. On two of them🤭.
Those of you who cut your Sedum back in the Fall, how short do you cut them?
I just know I’m going to miss seeing them all rusty brown and topped with snow.

Those of you who cut your Sedum back in the Fall, how short do you cut them? I cut mine to the ground, sometimes in late Fall, but I usually wait until February before new growth appears. I like seeing them add winter interest to the garden. Mine are still standing this year.

Since I’ve done the deed, I might dig out a couple of chunks to pot up. If I sink the pot and mulch around it, it should be good. If not, Nothing lost.

binnylou, I cut mine down to the ground. They are called "Lives Forever" for a reason! I don't think you can kill them. Even a little new growth bud in spring will root into a new plant if you want more. I have had them get knocked off, etc and they readily sprout and grow on their own.

Still some chrysanthemums blooming sporadically...Gomphrena still going strongly... But the big clumps of alyssum are spectacular now and have been for weeks...Lots of bees are happy about that...

Just picked another large bouquet of multi-colored snapdragons. They have certainly benefited by our recent rains. This and the previous bouquet for Christmas are the first two pickings. Very strong-looking this year. There were lots of leaves in the pathway, and I feared the bunnies had been nibbling. But it was just from me stripping the stems the other day when picking. Whew!
The first Iceland poppy bloomed the other day, and today a couple more. These are opening later than usual, but thankfully they survived the later season heat. Not all of them did. Next year must plant seed later.

I looked at the canna tubers today. And the Caladium tubers. Ahhh, but I have Christmas cactus and African violets blooming in the house! And I went down and smelled the dirt on the potatoes. Double Ahhhh......

My Christmas cactus bloomed right before Christmas. I bought an Amaryllis bulb on clearance last week. Waiting for that to bloom.

I gave one to my sister (who has a brown thumb) a couple of years ago and it was a huge success. It required nothing of her but to watch it grow! She was thrilled that she got a plant to bloom. And it was also a great price at Trader Joe's- $10
