I am learning this whole flower thing! Getting better at it I think you are more than getting better! Those are beautiful! I especially love the color of the first and last sunflowers. Are they the same?

desertwoman, I think those are either Red Sun or Velvet Queen or lol one of each! I tend to get all different kinds of Sunflowers, place all the seeds into cup/bag/whatever, shake and then plant. I do the same thing with the zinnias also.

Those ARE lovely Spike!
I'd like to try Zinnias next year - am particularly fond of the Cactus-flowering types with the large blooms that have quilled petals, but I like the other types as well. My mom used to grow them & we had indoor bouquets of them all summer long.
Love sunflowers too, but I don't think the deer will allow me to grow them.

gomphrena...the height varies from 12-24" Agreed...They grew much taller than I thought... Some that volunteered in flower pots were a little on the shorter side...But then I don't water a lot either...The gomphrena don't need it...They tolerate drought well...

Jap beetles? They can decimate a field of zinnia seeming overnight.

Oh gosh golly those nasty beetles >,< I never had any problem with them in my Zinnias but I have this beautiful, climbing rose bush that has the most amazing aroma and they will destroy it overnight.

Mom gave me a few cuttings of her Purple Queen spiderwort. That stuff is strikingly pretty all summer long. The more sun it gets, the more purple it gets. Doesn't mind heat, drought, or downpour. It does have small lavender blooms, and planted en masse it's really nice. Grew it many years back, and glad to have it again.

Have it all over and love the flowers. Don't know the variety. When it's in the wrong place, I feed it to the chickens. By the way, when I identified the spiderwort and realized I also had the weed, mugwort, I looked up the word "wort' to see if they were related. Found out wort means "plant".

My Zinnia's are all chewed up. Earwigs? The snails currently are getting my younger Zinnias. Just did snail partol this morning just before 5am (!) and got about 6 of them chowing down. Not sure you get plant-eating garden snails there however.

gianna,I've seen slugs on the cabbage, but not the Zinnias. The zinnias in pots and in the ground look terrible.

gianna,I've seen slugs on the cabbage, but not the Zinnias. It's been so dry here the past few years, we don't have many slugs anymore. Snails, yes. Fewer this year however, but enough to do some harm to the zinnias. I just finished setting up my 'cool flowers' inside spot. I started seed of snapdragons and iceland poppies a couple weeks ago and just moved up too many tiny seedlings into individual cells. If all works out, I want one bed of the poppies, and 2 beds of snaps for a vulgar display of color through the winter. I had something similar last year, and it was gorgeous. They are now living in small 6 packs on trays in a cool bedroom with cheapo LED strips for light. The seedlings are very tiny and vulnerable, and it's still too warm for them to be outside. I'm watering them with saved rainwater since our tap water is horrendous for baby plants.
