maybe it's time to invest in a dog I'd invest in a wildlife camera...just to see what is in your yard.

martywny, beautiful corn and it looks like you got some nice ears but with such a small number of plants I would definitely wiggle them a bit to make sure that the pollen falls down onto those silks.

I'd invest in a wildlife camera...just to see what is in your yard. You would be surprised at what shows up in your yard when you're not looking. We live in the burbs and here is my list - wolf, bear, coyote, squirrel, rabbit, skunk, turkey vulture, hawk, owl, rat, deer, opossum, heron, seagull, crow, lotsa birds, fox, dog, cat, raccoon, mouse. I have high resolution cameras around the property and it's entertaining to watch the different animal behaviors. The bear made the local news for a few days and then disappeared never to be seen again.

I did help out with pollination and hopefully we will have a good dinner out of it if we can keep the wildlife at bay until harvest. Notice the killer black flamingo in the pot - we're ready for anything!

martywny, My stepfather grew that when it first came out, and they got ears. Just keep the pot watered. Corn like water when they are tasseling. They only did them one year, but they thought it was fun, and stepfather used my method of pollen transfer with a sheet of paper, for extra insurance. Make sure the grandchild gets the first pick of the ears and show her how to break it off the stalk.

I brought this back for 2 reasons. 1) The problem I have with squirrels in my corn. So here is what I found and will try this or something I may work on during off season. www.motherearthnews.com/organic-gardening/heirloom-corn-varieties-zewz1307zpit.aspxWarding Off Unwanted Pests Ears of corn can be protected from raccoons and squirrels by wrapping the ears with 3/4-inch-wide packing tape, the sort with reinforced webbing of fiberglass or plastic. Circle the ear with the tape above where it is attached to the stalk, then gird the ear about 2 inches below the tip. Allow 24 inches of tape per ear, but do not wrap the tape so tightly that the corn cannot expand properly in the husk. The tape will keep the animals from pulling the ears off the stalks, and since the tape is reinforced, raccoons and squirrels cannot properly chew through it. It also foils crows. I will keep my fingers crossed for this... and 2) Container growing corn www.burpee.com/vegetables/corn/corn-on-deck-hybrid-prod003168.htmlwww.thesmartmama.com/planting-blue-jade-corn-in-my-container-garden/ May try it here. How are things with the container gardening martywny?

Good luck with that...you should see the damage that the squirrels have done to our cedar shingles right at the front door. And we had a raccoon get locked in our barn...he took a board off the door to get out. Teeth and claws all the way...

Okay, thanks. Good to know. I actually don't have a deck and would probably put it into the flower garden area. But I may have tried to put it next to the garage....so i won't do that. Thanks again for the heads up, binnylou!

I put a radio out in the corn patch tuned to the local talk station. It has done a great job of scaring the critters off.
