My corn is sprouting in the 72 cell trays...................so thought I should TORTURE you guys with how I do this.
I looked up the 2015 thread, and was gonna add there, instead of a new thread...........but changed my mind.
For new friends.............I have a small yard.............And Hubby likes corn.
I can't just plant seeds in the yard directly, because if I do...........critters (squirrels) dig them up, Or birds dive in and snatch that newly sprouted corn seed and enjoy eating that tender morsel of sprouted seed that's under the ground. They don't want the green part on top........they like that tender sprouted corn seed that is in the ground.
So............................
Here in Maryland, you plant corn in the fields around 5/1.
And in a week or so the corn germinates. Our last frost is around 5/10, NORMALLY and if corn sprouts, a light frost won't hurt it. BABY corn can handle light frosts.
I'm doing this corn for my initial planting, started 4/19, it's an sh2 and 2 years old now, and I gotta tell ya the year It first came out, germination sucked, but they told ya up front it's only about 85% germination, I know what I'm up against but Hubby liked this corn:
I need 36 plants for the first round, And only see 29 at the moment. I planted 48 seeds, so.............that tells ya the germination ain't worthy.............But hubby liked the corn...............need I say more.
Okay:
so when ya start corn in trays, you either keep them under lights, or set them outside right away after they germinate, on the deck or driveway when ya head for work if the weather warrants that.
Corn in the ground can handle a light frost, but corn in a cell tray, will Not be okay, so bring them in at night.
I TRANSPLANT WITH A DIBBLE and mulch all at the same time, and looked up some old pics to share.

This is how I plant and mulch with grass clippings: the dibble: pollen transfer, just because I can This is that Amiase corn: I'll start my next batch in a couple weeks, and that will be the variety Incredible www.superseeds.com/products/incredible-corn-f1-hybrid-84-daysI can't let these 2 varieties tassle at the same time (we have been through all that) hahhahaha SO, what's your plan?

Yep, 5th of May is corn planting day here. I always plant directly where it will grow in the garden. It can take a little frost since the leaf node is under the ground about an inch. If the top freezes down some it just sends up more growth. Pictures? Hmmmmm, that is weird. I guess I ought to try posting a picture to see what happens?

Coming back to corn. I like Ambrosia. I plant 3 rows, then when it is up three inches tall, plant 3 more rows, then when that is up 3 inches tall make a third planting.

My corn has sprouted. I may add seeds to a couple of blank spots today. I use my pack of seeds for 2 years so the second year has less than 100% germination.
My corn is about twice as close together as yours.

Sounds more like a carpenter than a gardener! I don't measure mine but I replanted the blank areas in my rows today.

lisaann, my corn looks about exactly like that now, except tonight's storms have it leaning quite a lot. Direct seeded in late April. Earlier than I usually plant, but I had plenty of seed. I made a second planting June 1. It's only about 8" tall. Sorry, no pictures at the moment.

Earlier than I usually plant I'm glad that early planting worked out for you. Last storm we had, I had to go out there and stomp mine upright again. I expect a storm to come right when they silk. Don'tcha HATE that? My second batch is looking pretty. Only 2 batches this year. I'm on a rotation year...........smaller plantings.

I'd love to grow corn but I doubt I can do it successfully. In the past I never got to harvest anything. Raccoons and squirrels are fierce contenders around here.
