Squirrels got to my corn again this year; I have never seen that kind of damage. Holy cow! When you told us before about the squirrels, I could not believe it. I have squirrels here too, but never saw one even go near my corn. You have some VERY MEAN squirrels up there. I just know I will dream about that pic. Shoo! brownrexx, I'm picking Incredible too. Tastes more like corn than the amaize. Sent this variety home with Mom and Son too. Incredible keeps on the stalk well for a few days. I like that in a corn...............

brownrexx, My incredible corn. This is going to be one of my keepers for next year in my stress free year. Now for a tidbit: My family likes the sh2 Amaize better than any other corn I've grown. Mother told me that the other day, and Daughter in law told me that this morning. Such a shame, cuz I'm NEVER growing that corn that just tastes like sugar AGAIN!

I've been thinking and thinking of what to do with the corn so the squirrels leave it alone. So what do you think about placing a net around the perimeter and over the stalks. (It will probably keep me out also.) Maybe if I used a lock and key!! But seriously, I know squirrels can dig and climb but netting doesn't really have structure to it. So maybe they can't climb it. And I have the raised bed with a wire mesh at the bottom so those buggers couldn't go under. Will I have any luck?? ya think?

I don't know what to even think..................I'm still shocked that squirrels did that............Raccoons, yep, saw that at Grannys back in the day. I'm still waiting to hear if any other gardeners get this type of damage on fresh corn from squirrels. I know they like dried corn, but shoo.....................your pic blew me away!

I have never seen a raccoon around here in the 5 years since I bought this but someone saw a possum coming out of my yard and have never seen them either. It certainly is a possibility that is what it is but it would surprise me.
Maybe I should invest in a flood light and aim it at my garden.

It looks like raccoon damage to me too but last year my neighbor did tell me that the squirrels were eating his corn. I think that raccoons pull the stalks down and you can see that.

I was talking with some of my neighbors just a little while ago and they were saying they have never seen raccoons around here either. But I can say that I did see one squirrel on the corn last year but that was the only time. I don't see them there all the time either.
And another thing with this years corn is lack of silks. Many stalks have no silks either. I don't know if that means the seed was not good or what. But I got seeds from Renee's and High Mowing.

Some insects like Japanese Beetles will eat the silks.

lilolpeapicker ,
When you picked those ears for a picture, was the whole stalk laying on the ground, or still standing upright in the corn patch and the corn was chewed on and the plant was still fine?
Other Critters
Some of the methods that keep raccoons out will also work for skunks, woodchucks, deer and squirrels. An electric fence is the best all-around pest barrier, except when it comes to squirrels. These agile creatures aren't put off by fences, electric or not. One way to keep squirrels away is to sprinkle red pepper or Tabasco sauce on some ears on the outer rows of the corn. It won't affect the corn's flavor when it's cooked, but any squirrel, skunk or raccoon who takes a nibble of the "hot" ears isn't likely to come back for seconds.
It seems there's an endless list of home remedies to try to keep the corn patch free of four-footed pests: running barefoot around the corn rows to leave a strong human scent; tying your dog near the corn to guard it; placing a paper bag over each ear; the bag of tricks seems bottomless. Some of these methods work some of the time, so try anything you think might work for you. Using several methods in succession or simultaneously increases your chances of success.
I copied that from this link:

James radio would probably be easiest.

I have heard of the bag thingy, can try that, radio as well but can ya buy a regular radio anymore? The stalk is upright, was not laying on the ground, a raccoon would be heavy enough to knock it over, has not been knocked down, maybe it's time to invest in a dog. Red pepper hasn't worked on the bird seed at the feeders, but I do keep trying. x_x I will try again next year.

can ya buy a regular radio anymore? Dang, I don't know. My radios are all from the old days. hahhahahaah Now you have me wondering........... Maybe you'll have to get ear thingys for the critters? Holy cow............I must look at walmart and see if they still have radios. I listen to the radio in the house on an old radio to hear the plant doctor on Saturday and Sunday mornings. And we listen to music on it sometimes..................on Saturday afternoons.

Hello all, I wanted to post a picture of the Burpee "On Deck" hybrid I bought for my granddaughter to put in her garden. So far it all looks good, lots of ears and hopefully a yummy good crop. It's sort of a novelty for us being her first attempt at gardening but it's more fun than anything else just to watch the progress. I've read some negative reviews on this product stating there was no corn and would like to know why that happens if anyone has ideas. Marty in WNY Attachments:
