Funny thing, this is the first year it was on such a short stem. Not sure why.

You know how you just have some stuff in pots that died down...and you put them in 'The died down plants spot', until you can get to take care of them? Well, this is not this year's amaryllis...that's happily/luckily planted outside...and doing well... This is last year's bulb... It just sat there forever, inside, in the 'waiting to be tended to area'...until just a few weeks ago when it went outside to the next 'waiting area'... The next thing I know, after a few rains, it's sprouting a couple leaves and a great big bud... Then this happened... Short and squatty...and five beautiful blooms... Pretty hardy bulb, I'd say...

I love surprises like that. Hardy, indeed!

Beautiful. I used to always plant mine outside for the summer and enjoy the blooms outside but one year I forgot to dig them up and they all froze. Oh well.

Mine is still in sleep mode. I was late setting it in the dark.
I'm figuring it will be January before it starts growing.

I didn't know I was supposed to. But this plant is relatively new to me in how to care for it...I shoulda looked it up. Mine is still going but no flower only leaves. But I noticed when it bloomed much of the bulb shrunk and thought it was actually all done. No??

The bulbs can re-flower for years lilolpeapicker, But they need a dormant period (accounts vary- but I let mine sleep for 6-8 weeks). After they stop blooming, I keep watering the plant through the summer, like any house plant, then in the Fall I stop watering it, put it in a dark cool space and let it rest for those 6-8 weeks, cutting back the withered leaves. Then I bring it back out to a sunny room and water it and let it start all over again. It's probably not too late. If you've been watering it, stop. And move it to a dark cool spot. Then end of January/early February see if it revives. It's worth a try.

Just noticed new leaves starting to shoot up on 2 out of the 3 bulbs I've had for years.

Looks like we are on the same cycle datgirl, I was late waking mine up and it is just sprouting leaves now. But still no sign of a flower bud. On that note- I seem to remember that they sometimes sprout the flower bud first and then some leaves. Hubs thinks not; that it's always leaves first. Has anyone seen flower buds sprout before leaves or am I making that up?!

desertwoman,I think your right. I think I have one that the flower bud sprouts first. Now you got me thinking.

On mine, the flower bud finally popped out 3 days ago and is growing quickly- it's about 4 inches tall today. lisaann, do you always put yours under the lights? I just put mine near a sunny window. I wonder if the lights are too much for it.
