Went to my great nephew's baptism. Had to go into Chicago not far from where I used to live. After the church service there was a reception at the home of my nephew and his wife. Saw a bunch of people I haven't seen in many years, so it was fun catching up. An uncle of his plays the bagpipes so he played a few songs. That was pretty cool. Except for the rain and the traffic, a very nice day.

Started out this morning trying to catch up on some much needed weed eating. Took a break about 9 to run get feed for all the animals. Then back to weed eating followed up by getting the tractor out to clean up the outside horse stalls. Dripping wet I quit mid afternoon. It was a good day……..

So it was a busy, long, rainy weekend. The rain hampered our sales a bit as well as the fact we were the only ones selling except for a guy that showed up for a few hours yesterday. We've become masters at covering our tables at the first sprinkle and withstood over 2" of rain over the last four days. Hubby and I are planning to attempt it again next weekend and after that I'll be discontinuing a few things from the store inventory and will donate what remains. Kiddo's clothes made her a few dollars too.
While we were debating on whether to chance it on Friday, I managed to get the twine on the last bean trellis and still came up short. It's the first thing on my list of things to get today. Tomatoes have been going into the freezer and harvested the cabbage as I'd found harlequin stink bugs devouring them. Cut over a gallon bag for kraut out of damaged heads and hope to get it in jars this evening. Been picking beans as well and have an assortment of yellow, purple, reddish and green beans to cook and/or pickle. Have an appointment in town today and decided to combine that with the big grocery trip and numerous other errands. Plus this is the last day of the sales tax holiday on clothing and school supplies and hopefully I can find a few more things for kiddo though I suspect everything has been thoroughly picked through.
I was contacted by a friend of my mom's who is moving and needs someone to help her pack, so may be busy a day or two this week. I sat around on Tuesday last week waiting for a telephone interview that never happened. When I inquired, I was told that there'd been very few applicants and it was likely to be reposted. This morning I was quite surprised to see an email asking if I'd be willing to submit a portfolio of my work, so scrambling for photos so I can get them printed and organized while I'm in town.

I was COLD walking this morning! It was 65 with NW wind. Refreshing though. Picked beans and tomatoes yesterday. This morning it was cabbage, cukes, eggplant and kohlrabi. Next on list is to plant some lettuce and Fall radishes. Then to fry up eggplant and freeze it, I'm sure a lot of it won't make it to the freezer, I tend to eat it in the process! Taking a bunch of veggies to sis tomorrow, staying at her house tomorrow night. Then will do shopping in Cedar Rapids on my way home.

It was going to be another hot and humid day but since it was overcast, I decided to mow. I started before I wanted to because rain was predicted and dew on the grass prevented me from using the bagger. Merrily I rode along and then it started raining. The rain felt good and was cooling so I continued riding around on my tractor in the rain looking like a fool, getting my work done and enjoying it.

I went to Aldi's this morning, and it was already 89° at 9:20 am when I got home, with disgusting humidity! I picked the okra before I came in, and didn't set foot outside until about 2 pm, when I picked those cherry tomatoes earlier, then again, around 6 pm, for this misc harvest. Cukes, eggplant, tomatoes, and a few beans. 8-8 by pepperhead212, on Flickr

Very cool yesterday. Opened all the windows. Fried up 8 eggplant, froze most of it. Picked kale and froze 6 pkgs. Found 5 good sized kohlrabi, they sure take up a lot of room, the stalks were huge. Planted lettuce and Fall radishes. Did some garden cleanup. Things are starting to look tired. Bean picking again this morning, then off to Cedar Rapids with a stop at Dad's to pick beans. The beans just won't stop this year! Now there's even more to pick, their pole beans are producing. They will either be sold or frozen per step-mom. I sure don't need any more!
Thursday will be a marinara day.

Checked garden for rain damage. After 2 days of rain I found a lot of split tomatoes, lost 5 big sunflowers, lots of floppy plants that hopefully will perk up with the sunshine today. Green beans are out of control, have to get out there this afternoon and pick. Weeds are happy and healthy after the rain. Will be working on those too.

pepperhead212, I could easily see that photo as a painting, even an embroidered piece.

Kind neighbor wandered by, saw my ripening Rewia sweet bell peppers, and said, "wow!"...so I gave him some. Dear Brother came by, saw my cured garlic, and said, "wow!"...so I gave him some. Plenty more for the kitchen. I love gardening.

Other than gathering a few tomatoes and walking around the garden, my work outside was limited because of the heat. Kiddo and I did splash around in her pool and went for a short walk (you know it's hot when she cuts the walk short). I started working on one of those "do you think you could make something like this?" projects and quite happy with how it's progressing. Received an email in response to submitting my portfolio asking if I had any teaching experience. What? Wondering if they've jumbled things up as that seems totally unrelated to what I applied for. Set up an in-person meeting tomorrow afternoon, so we shall see.
Mom and I are helping a friend pack for moving today and it saddens me to see them move from the dream home they built to a smaller home due to declining health.

Yesterday started out with sweetheart’s daughter and two grandsons coming to pick some veggies. Sweetheart was all smiles as she was chauffeured to the garden on the golf cart. This was the first time she’s been out of the house since her surgery on 8/1. Our Weston tomato juicer was delivered so the grandson and I had to try it out. We ended up making 7 quarts of juice for the freezer. It was a very good day….. My helper……
