Yesterday after my usual outside morning chores and inspection of the newly planted raspberries and rhubarb I made myself go down stairs and up-pot cabbage, eggplants, ground cherries and tomatoes. This leaves me one more flat of tomatoes to work on today before being able to call this task complete. I did take a couple of breaks from my duties to do such important things as chauffeuring the 3yr old grandson to the grocery store on the golf cart for some of the “best ever” Mac and cheese and grilling brats to have on hand to reheat as needed. Got good news came later on that our friends mother’s house has sold relieving me of my mowing duties that I’ve been saddled with for the last 3 years. Wet weather is predicted for this morning so I’ll feel less guilty finishing up in the basement……

I have some leftover cabbage seedlings to pot up, been waiting for a space to put them. Now that 2 trays have moved outside, that space is available for occupancy. Some of my peppers are not looking as good as the first planted ones. Wondering if the moon phase has anything to do with it, all have been treated the same. The second batch was started a week later. They are smaller, some purple looking leaves.......I'll let them dry out a bit then see. Can't imagine a nutrient deficiency since I used all the same planting medium. That's one issue of the day. Not much left to do outside right now. Might be forced to clean house....... .

Really need to do some tomato potting, but we are so busy working at this stupid rental, I haven't had a chance. I'll be so glad when the papers are signed on Friday. Still have stuff to get out, but mostly stuff going to thrift stores and garbage. No choice on some of this stuff. We are trying to recycle as much as possible. I told hubby next week don't ask me to clean anything, I am going to play in the dirt all week.

Not much left to do outside right now. Might be forced to clean house...... House cleaning (not the pick up- we stay on top of that, at least) gets so neglected at this time of year. It's really starting to bug me... but not enough to stop working outside.

I got out there a little before 2 pm; not real sure early, but I got everything ready in the back garden today - still have the peppers and okra on the side and front, plus I have those rows to 'til, that I still have to wait for, because they are still very wet, but not muddy, like it was few days ago.

Ventured out at noon. Warm but windier than windy! Took all inedible plants outside. Also parsley and cabbage. By Monday they will all be outside ready to meet their forever homes on May 3-4. Plucked more dandelions. Lots of rain forecast for this weekend with warmer temps. Dandelions will pop with a vengeance. I think creeping Jenny is taking over the yard. Years ago I had a hanging pot with it in the garden. It’s definitely not creeping Charlie. Lime green in color. Spent time in garage reducing boxes for plant sale. Cut them down to 3-4” deep. Sure saves space. The Princess got another brushing. She’s learning to love it. Vacuumed and dusted 1/2 of first floor. Enough for me for now.
Big city trip tomorrow. Then more garage stuff. And dandelions.

Hit the motherlode of jeans today at two different thrift stores. At least ten pair in my size, three pair of acid-washed for quilt projects and a few colored pair for the same. Hubby knows I'm partial to snowmen and bought a whole box for a quarter each. Now I have to start another Christmas tote. Was thrilled to find Vancouver Centennial geraniums at Walmart as I had one a few years ago and neglected to overwinter it. The blooms aren't anything spectacular but the foliage is gorgeous. They also had the packages of perennial and bulbs marked down to $2 and I picked up an elephant ear, a pack of pink iris and two packs of stargazer lilies that still had signs of life. Potted them up this evening and gave them a good drink. Noticed that Grandma's irises in the back yard all have buds on them so I'll finally be able to tell which is which.

Nothing garden related other than moving plants out for their daily out door or green house lounge, and then back in for the night. Had my 6 month dermatology appointment and only had 4 or 5 pre-cancers frozen off. The good news is that I have not had a basal cell cancer in 5 years. I have been with this doc for almost 6 years and he is remarkable. He finds these pre cancers really early and is really gifted in helping his patients not have to have biopsies or not get actual skin cancers . I have not had to have a biopsy or had a bc cancer removed since 6 months after starting with him. Finished my in town with the 2 week grocery shopping and then home for a relaxing evening.

Went to town, quick trip. Everything on my list was either at Walmart or Aldi, they are next to each other. Came home and thought of moving plants outside, but I'm in a quandary over the purple tomato leaves, and a few on peppers. Thought and thought about it. Everything was the same. Only difference I thought of was timing of seed starting, full moon phase or waning moon phase. Thought some more. Couldn't be nutrients, same as last year. Then got to reading, could be too much light and too cool. So with that, I hauled the space heater 2 floors down to the basement. Turned all lights off early today. Then just to cover all the bases of deficiencies: calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, I mixed up some liquid (highly diluted) Mumsey's mix, possible new use? And gave everyone a sip or two. Strange all the cool weather plants and flowers all look great.........hmmmm..... And the reason it's cooler down there this year is because after DH passed, I turned the heat down 6*, he was always cold. Years ago we had a disagreement, I don't remember what it was even about.. What I do remember is DH's comment after we had hashed it all over. He said, "you will find something to blame me for when I'm dead and gone." We laughed over that. So here ya go honey, purple tomato leaves are your fault. Oh brother, I twisted that one around didn't I? Just have to laugh sometimes. Spent some time on deck reading, very calm breeze today and sunny. Next few days look iffy. Severe weather forecast.

I didn't do a lot outside today - not a lot to do out back, and it was clouding over, then when it finally cleared up, the wind got really bad again, with gusts in the high 20s, to mid 30s. Tomorrow is supposed to be very cool, but wind is supposed to die back, so I can get some of those sprouted seeds planted, and the trays under the lights.

Today was irrigation day from the acequia madre. We're still tweaking how the water runs on our property, refining the smaller channels that direct the water to trees and a channel that allows the water to flood our native grass area. So a lot of shoveling of mud. Dug up and potted two volunteer trumpet vines. Will give to a couple of neighbors. I also up potted 8 basil plants and planted a chunk of some asiatic lily I divided.

I think our Spring will finally arrive tomorrow. Right now it is 24° and this should be our last frost. I went out yesterday evening and tarped all the fruit trees to protect them from the frost. Everything is in bloom, bees and other critters are out and about. We've had rain about 60% of the last three weeks so the garden is still mostly mud.
My fencing project is coming along nicely, all posts are set in concrete, ends are cross-braced, wire is going up today. My fruit trees are ready to pick up and I will plant them as soon as top wires are installed. I have 4' welded wire fence, 18" of chicken wire at the bottom to prevent rabbits from getting through, three strands of wire going up 7' to keep deer from jumping it.
I've been busy golfing with granddaughter #2, getting in some practice rounds, and going to the driving range. She was invited to the Junior Tour and I have been taking her to the matches. Last week we had temps in the low 40s, rain, hail, snow, and 30+ mph winds, the worst day I ever spent on a golf course. I felt sorry for the girls having to play in it, several said it was too much and went home.
I mowed and rolled the yard twice in the past month and will mow around the garden area when it dries out. I also have to get the main garden tilled before putting the ground cover down, then I can transplant. I am installing an underground irrigation system and placing water spigots out by the garden areas, I have been using a 300' hose to get back there up through this year. Building a new 12' x 16' shed is still on my to-do list, I have all the materials for foundation and floor. Seems like I have everything but enough time to complete my projects.
All of my early transplant crops have been planted in flats and are doing well, summer crops will be planted next week and into the garden about June 1st.

Spent the last two days helping with a mobile agricultural lab at school. Interesting but all day on my feet takes its toll. Was called into the school once because kiddo was throwing a fit. Went in and she hopped on my lap and clung to me which is unusual for her. Evidently her stuffed doll is being taken away various times during the day resulting in a meltdown. That really angers me because I was told that having something for comfort wasn't a big deal and stated that I was going to attempt to break the habit this summer. It's one therapist in particular and I plan on being at school when she arrives tomorrow to straighten it out. I swear that just when I think everything is going to be fine, someone throws a monkey wrench in it.
So I may get some gardening done tomorrow and I may not.

It was a cooking day. Made a pot of my mom's sauce, with turkey meatballs and spicy chicken Italian sausage and then made a big pan of lasagna with plant based ricotta and brown rice lasagna pasta- enough for 6 dinners for the two of us. We ate one tonight and froze the other 5. Had to make a trip to town for some items to complete the meal, got home and soon realized I had forgotten to check and didn't have enough lasagna pasta so back to town for that. Managed to get the laundry done, too, while cooking. Watered the lettuce and a few things in the flower gardens.
