Nice day today, would have reduced the wind a little, for a perfect day. I got a lot done out there today, getting the tarps off those SIPs , and getting them in their spots for the season, though I didn't level them, or "refresh" them yet. A few of the plastic covers on them need replaced (hard to believe how many years some of that lasts!), and I save a lot of those heavy plastic bags from things like peat, to make them with. The ground was very muddy in areas still, due to all the rain lately, but there is none forecast until next Wednesday, so maybe the sun will dry it out some. I'll get more done tomorrow, though it is supposed to be much cooler for a few days. Getting garden almost ready for those tomatoes (and a few other things). 4-20 by pepperhead212, on Flickr

After a delayed start, we went to the house in town and worked on the drip irrigation set up. Normally, we do the back and front yards in one afternoon. Today we just about got the entire back done (one small section left to check and clean up) but the front yard is waiting for us. Monday. There was a huge leak in one of the main pipes that had to be addressed. And we're both still running on less than all cylinders. We're gettin' it done however.

It was 34* in the garden yesterday morning around 0700. We have a hard freeze warning right now.
Headed out for the baby shower at 1100, picked up step-mom, left the shower at 3:10, got her home by 4 and I was home by 5. More driving than I wanted to do, especially in that strong NW wind, which was the direction we had to go. It was a nice shower, haven't been to one in 20 years!!
Went out and tucked everything in with sheets when I got home. Peas are loving the cool weather, they were poking out of the mulch I put on the night before, so piled more on them. Not sure what I'm doing today, less wind and 60*.

Went out at 0930 this morning to remove all covers. Only got down to 31*. All is well. Was planning to do only that, but it wasn't too cold, wind light so stayed out. One thing led to another. Found 3 more asparagus plants, dug those and potted up. Cleaned grass from fence line, til my back was screaming at me. So did other things not requiring so much bending over. Somehow I managed to stay out there for 5 hours. Mowed back yard. Saw my amaryllis in the basement is starting to send up new shoots. It's bone dry, hasn't had water since I put it down there in a dark place. So planted it in the ground, the directions said to do that. So will it bloom again before I dig it up in Fall? Planted Marigold seeds, early, but they will come up when it's time. I never start them indoors. Went in at 2:30, realized once again that I didn't eat lunch. Cut up a couple apples and had those with nuts. Princess loves apples. Brushed her good, shedding something terrible! Rested til 3:30, then went for a walk. Came home and trimmed the entire yard, I'll mow the front tomorrow. I think I'll put Canna in the ground tomorrow too. Their eyes are looking at me when I peek at them. And finish the fence line behind the asparagus patch. Might even sow some beet and kale seeds. Lettuce is poking up! It's definitely barley pop season, love me a cold one after working outside all day.

Ugh, spent yesterday and today cleaning out rental house. It sold, so now we have to get rid of contents of house. Long story, won't even get in to it. Too complicated. Checked garden, all is well. Peas are poking out, onions are hanging in there, garlic looks good. Cardiologist appointment tomorrow morning, than back to cleaning up the rental. We close on Friday, so we have a deadline.

I up potted Sandia chiles today. There are now 36 chile plants on the garden cart, spending their days in the fresh air and sunshine and nights they are wheeled into the house. Also got out the weeder and took out every dandelion that had a flower blooming. This is now my new strategy- remove dandelions as they flower and before they go to seed. It's not so overwhelming a task when I have just a dozen or so every 1-2 days. The seeds originally blew in from the empty field, west of us. Then one year I was lax in getting the flowers deadheaded, so they got out of control. We'll see how successful I am in bringing some kind of order to the native grass I have planted at that end of our property

Yesterday was the school bingo and it did poorly compared to last year. We made a profit but not near what we expected. Good news is that we have enough leftover supplies to pretty much do our concessions in June.
Plants have been neglected over the weekend so been up early watering and still not finished. Have about twenty geranium seedlings to move up to bigger pots and new seedlings to pot up. Out of 30 seeds, 27 germinated. Hoping to get outside after it warms up and accomplish something. The wind really did a number on the compost bin and need to reattach the metal sides and maybe get started on building a second bin.

For the past month working on so many paperwork things that I haven't even started or planted anything. Had life plan meeting for my brother, which his care manager organizes, types up drafts and so forth. One main thing was to get him a CBT therapist who also does trauma therapy and is experienced working with special needs (the latest jargon for it) clients. Found well qualified person two hours away so will need to use telehealth technology. Sister came over from NJ for several days so we could put together his annual guardianship report. Also went and set up a pre-need funeral plan as per the guardianship judge's order. Brother was summoned for jury duty after I made clear in the questionnaire last year that it might not be a good idea for him to serve and asked what proofs they needed. That went unanswered and I got the summons. Had to get doctor's note and write another letter. Hope that is accepted or I will have to show up with him. Then a lot of cleaning and holiday prep. Yesterday my Florida daughter called and told me she was hungry. As I was making suggestions she walked through the door, wonderful surprise. She pitched in with shopping and holiday prep and is doing all the cooking for the seder meal for us and her two local sibling's families. Hoping to get my onions, potatoes and seeds started at the end of this week.

Once again I managed to stay outside 5 hours. Took parsley and some blooming petunias to the outdoors. Then got the mower out and mowed front yard. Dug rest of grass from fence line. Weeded a perennial bed which meant culling lots more blue flax and every larkspur I saw. Then plucked heads off of about 500 dandelions, including the little nubs that would eventually bloom. Had 2/3 of a 2 gallon bucket full. Took 2 totes of leaves to tree dump. Then got busy and planted beets: golden, cylindra, and albino. Then bright lights chard and dwarf Siberian kale. Dug a row for carrots:Kyoto red, harlequin mix, and Dancer. I put shredded leaves on the carrot row to keep moisture in. Once they germinate I’ll remove most of it.

The highlight of my day today was giving Mr. Breezy a haircut. He's got a full array of professional tools & only wants a very basic cut, so even rank amateur that I am, I can now do a pretty darn respectable job of it after my beginning almost-Moe cuts at the start of the pandemic. And he doesn't even have to leave me a tip - lol!!

breezygardener, re: Moe's cuts. Years ago my Dad needed his hair cut; it was gray and getting long. I offered to cut it using a bowl. Brought back a good chuckle.

We finished setting up the drip irrigation at the house in town. I trimmed back the rest of the lavender plants . And we replaced a bamboo privacy screen that was nearly 15 years old and so past time for re-doing.. Then I shoveled a bunch of small gravel that was spilled over onto our property from a project the neighbors had done. It really bugs me when a landscaping company couldn't clean up after themselves, leaving all that gravel burying my drip lines and some plants. I had to get it out of the way so I could get the drippers checked out. The neighbors are out of town so I couldn't ask them to do it (which I would have if they had been here). But really- the landscapers were lazy and inconsiderate. I left the pile of gravel I shoveled at the edge of their driveway , for the neighbors to deal with when they get home. Passive aggressive on my part? but it was so satisfying!

Today I got a bunch done, topping off the SIPs, and replacing the tops on I think 4 them. Just the dozen buckets left, plus the peppers and okra, which are later things. In fact, I soaked the okra overnight, and set it to sprout. And on checking those seeds I have sprouting, I couldn't believe that 3 of 6 of those bitter melon seeds have sprouted (and that was this morning, only about 1½ days, and those things are notoriously slow, and low % to germinate. The winter melon has one barely sprouting, and the others had at least one with a hint of a sprout, but not as good as the bitter melon.
Tomorrow I have something to do in the middle of the day tomorrow, so I won't be getting dirty early in the day. Maybe I'll find some seeds to plant inside, and hopefully, I'll finish early, and I can get back out there.

I was still feeling the effects of Sunday, so I went back to bed for an hour after getting kiddo on the bus yesterday. Watered indoor seedlings and went outside after it warmed up. Hubby was in mowing and trimming mode so I raised the plastic around the kennel greenhouse so he wouldn't tear or throw grass on it. Went through some pots mom had sent up and found the trowel she's been looking for since last spring. Potted up four boxwood cuttings from 2022 that rooted over the winter and only one left to root. Glad I wasn't in a hurry for them. I snatched the remaining two folding table frames from the junk pile as I used one in the greenhouse last year and it worked great. Sprayed WD40 on the folding mechanisms and now need to use some salvaged rabbit fencing to make tops for them. Each will hold four flats and saves me from building anything yet. Potted a lily bulb I bought at the dollar store and gave the potted blueberries and hydrangeas a good drink. I purposely held off on making the PTO and personal deposits until today so that we could visit the .25 thrift store. Very few groceries needed but aiming to pick up some plastic epoxy in an effort to repair the fittings on that free mini greenhouse I picked up. Did notice that Amazon is selling all but one of the replacement fittings so may order a few just in case. Need very few groceries but hopefully I find lots of cardboard. Volunteering at school tomorrow and Thursday and other than an hour here and there and kiddo's field trip, I'm hoping that's about it for the rest of the year (well at least for school).
