And here I always attributed it to me being a Gemini (great at multi tasking)! Or getting bored. Or in the old days, smoking too much mj. Or.... It all gets done, just in a circular (spiral) fashion rather than linear. gardendmpls, Latitude33,

J didn't do a lot outside today, as the rain was forecast to be here around noon, and amazingly, they were right! But only halfway - it wasn't supposed to be very hard, but it did come down hard, thoroughly soaking everything, and there is another one of those things that might be coming through tonight. Later in the day, it had dried up enough to do a little, before it got dark - some more fabric down to control the weeds a little this year. If it wasn't wet, with more rain coming, I would have sprayed some of those weeds with that 10% acetic acid. Good thing is, the rain that was supposed to come the next two days is now no longer in the forecast. I'll have to wait to see what it looks like tomorrow.

Today was the first day we could divert water from the Acequia Madre. Two and a half hours of a running streamlet through our property, giving our trees a deep drink. What a gift and honor to have access to this ancient water source.
I also up potted 24 Big Jim starts (4 more to go). I still need to up pot the Sandias (20) but I need more pots (I wasn't paying attention). Will get those ready tomorrow. Did a little weeding. Then made cat food while our own dinner was marinating and brown rice was cooking. We make enough cat food to last about 6 weeks or so, and store in the freezer. This was the best day post flu, more energy and though not back 100% getting there- not as wiped out as yesterday.

With sweetheart in Alabama, I was up early yesterday to ride out to the farm to help load up a steer that was going to the butcher to be processed. Then back out to load a cull cow and 3 feeder calves to go to the sale barn. We stopped for breakfast then the neighbor went to work and I got my morning chores done. The farrier came to do the girls toes and had to whittle on one of the ponies hooves as her fungus hasn’t cleared up yet. Sent him away with 6 pepper plants. The father-in-law stopped in to chat for a bit leaving me about an hour before I had to go pickup mom so I took a quick nap. Mom and I went to my grandsons soccer game even though the it was quite breezy and chilly. After soccer mom and I stopped for a bite to eat before returning her home. Woke up this morning to 47 degree temps and a couple of windows open with the furnace turned off making for a quick dash to shut windows and turn on the furnace! 😂

Since the day turned out to be cold and dreary, I took out a turkey carcass out of the freezer and put it in a pot with some water to make a base for turkey soup tomorrow. Baked a loaf of peasant bread, which went over well with the evening meal. And will be great with a big bowl of soup tomorrow.

Determined to do as much as I could today as it's my last free day until next week. Started by emptying those totes of jars from hubby's cousin. Ended up with over 8 dozen quart jars, 2 dozen pints, and a few jelly jars. Probably a tote's worth of misc food jars that I'll probably use for making tinctures and for seed storage. Planted some fava beans transplants in the new garden as well as a few chives plants in the holes of the concrete blocks in hopes of deterring moles and mice. Noticed fall planted fingerlings are popping up through the mulch and moved some of the capstone to the ends on the new bed. Mowed around the new garden and intended to transplant some rhubarb but realized it was nearly time for kiddo to come home.

I'm now on the mid spring routine. The potted up chiles are on the garden cart so they get wheeled out in the morning into the protected flagstoned area (gets quite warm, even days in 60s) and back into the house at night. Still have a flat of tomato, basil and the chiles starts that I carry to the green house for the day and back into the house and heat mat at night. Didn't do much, garden related except to water the transplants. Made an unplanned trip into town for a couple of things.

Freeze warning overnight. I didn't cover anything. As I suspected it's only 32*, garden area is somewhat protected so not worried. Tonight and tomorrow night I will cover since forecast is 29*. The peas are coming up, easy to toss mulch over them. Sheets for onions, though they would probably be OK with no cover. Cabbage and Celeriac are in milk jugs. All dug perennials are on South side of garage, so on their own. All that asparagus I potted up is sending up shoots. I keep snapping them off and eating them. Had more rain yesterday so no digging grass from the fence line. A total of 1.75" last 3 days. Did some machine sewing on the cathedral window quilt. Figured out how to prop phone on the window ledge and watch Netflix while sewing. Yesterday I watched "I Can Only Imagine". And the end of Heartland season 15. Now to wait for 16. Brother called last night. Asked if I could "swing by" and pick up step-mom for the baby shower on Saturday. Jokingly told him it's not a "swing by" but a "swing around" since it is 30 miles in the opposite direction and that's one-way. So I have to leave at 11:15 so we can get there by 1:00. Cool and windy today, I spied another asparagus plant yesterday so I'll get that potted up. Been having to raise lights on basement dwellers every other day. Growing fast! Hoping to get them out of the house by the 27th.

I "enjoyed" a rather irksome grocery run today.
Stopped at Lidl for a few really good sales items, & while there perused the new "garden center" they've set up in part of their parking lot. Really basic stuff, some just generically labeled, but one very healthy-looking tomato plant of a variety I'd not heard of before ("Buffalosun") caught my eye, so I grabbed it. Did the rest of my shopping & headed home.
Get home & take the tomato plant out. . . . & the label says "Fantastico", not "Buffalosun". Totally my fault. I was so irked at my error that after I put the groceries away, I drove back to Lidl to get the "Buffalosun" because I just knew that if I waited, they most likely would be gone because there were very few of them. But all's well that ends well. On the return trip I noticed that they had both colors of impatiens I use for my door basket - neon orange & neon fuschia - in packs of 4 plants for $1.99 each. So I bought a pack of each color. I can put some plants in the door basket & some in a different pot/planter. In addition, I just looked up the "Fantastico" tomato, & it turns out that it's an award-winning red grape tomato specifically bred for containers!! So I guess I'm glad that I picked that one up by mistake after all.

Darn cold with high winds today. Just went out and covered onions with sheets, held in place with hooks/stakes I made from clothes hangers. Tossed mulch on top of peas. The celeriac had frosty crunchy leaves this morning. But fine later. No harm done.
Watered some of the basement kids this morning. Then worked most of the day on the cathedral window quilt. On the home stretch!! I might get it done yet.
Need to mow. Looks like a deep field out there. Maybe Sunday if there’s enough sun to warm up the mower engine.

Another raised bed planted to onion starts (with hubby’s help), but need to go back and finish the bed of reds. Harvested some beautiful asparagus…will add that to previous harvest. Since I think a rabbit might be checking out the asparagus, I put protective culvert collars around the most productive plants. There was a spear broken/bit and left on the ground. I might have stepped on it yesterday, but I don’t think so. I think a rabbit is the culprit.
After lunch, I planned to return for more gardening festivities, but that wind was strong and cold.
Started some First Lady marigolds and some Art Deco zinnias. Since I’m running so late planting these, I decided to not bother with Impatiens
Potted up some Red Marconi peppers, Sweet Banana peppers, Brandywine tomato plants.

I started out making another what I thought would be a quick trip to town. World Market was having a 20% off sale and we needed a new door mat. So off I went to get that . WM is at the same end of town (the furthest south it could be from our place, which is north of town) so while at that end, stopped at Lowes for some bamboo reed fencing (to use for privacy screen at the in town house). They had just received a huge shipment of garden plants so, of course, I had to take a good look. They all looked really healthy. I was impressed with the quality (compared to what I have seen at Home Depot). Bought 2 delphiniums for nearly half the price they are asking for at the nursery I stopped in, yesterday. And because I was in a part of town I don't usually get to , I checked out 2 other nurseries... just in case... but was not impressed with their offerings.
Got home later than I thought I would. Had a snack and a couple of glasses of water and then went out and hand watered everything, one more time. We should (hopefully) have the drip system up and running by next weeks watering. But we need to set up the house in town first (tomorrow) and since we still are not back to 100% energy levels, we are needing to pace ourselves.

Had enough time yesterday to water plants, do a bit of laundry, eat lunch and shower before heading to school to prepare for bingo yesterday. Have everything set up except for the concessions that can't be set up until the day of. Home around 9pm and exhausted enough that I slept through night. My main job today is making hot dog chili and coleslaw but kiddo and I will probably find time to go outside.

With sweetheart in Alabama since Tuesday I’ve kept pretty darn busy here at home this week. Daily duties inside and out along with keeping close tabs on Ruby's activities, while she’s still healing from last week’s surgery, takes more time than I realized. But I’ve mowed twice, run the weed eater, up-potted peppers and cabbage ( I’ll never make team Mumsey, as I’m slower than the seven year itch), picked up more potting soil and rosé food, and had the oldest grandson change out 6 outside light fixtures. Went on a short trip yesterday to see a couple of school mates who are neck deep in their gardening activities to get some more rhubarb starts, thornless black raspberry starts and asparagus roots but Thursday nights rain made it to muddy to do anything. I’ll be taking them tomato, peppers and eggplants in a couple of weeks when it warms up. Stopped at mom’s yesterday to return her folding chairs that we’ve had since Easter, I forgot they were in the covered bed of the truck, and came away with a container of cantaloupe and a bag of cookies. I think I got the better end of that deal. Time to make sure everything is ready for sweetheart’s return tonight. Hope everyone has a good day…….
