Is that the hand cranked or electric? Can't see from the picture. I have a hand cranked Victorio (was bought out by Roots and Branches). It looks very similar, but made of strong plastic. I did find it useful to run the discard pile of seeds and skins through a second time to extract even more juice and pulp.

emmsmommy, I'm wondering if the company was impressed with your resume or portfolio and thought of you in another position that might be open, or created as opposed to the one for which you applied?

Wish I knew more about mushrooms and other fungi...got to be careful, you know. Traipsing/muddling around the garden and yard after a rainy period, we spotted several different kinds that we've never seen before in thirty-plus years here. I take it as a sign of a healthy, organic yard. Morels and Chicken-of-the-woods are known around here, but I've never come across them. centralilrookie, I'm onto getting a juicer like that, soon as I can. Your grandson likes wielding the pestle, I see.

SpringRain🕊️, I don't know and curiosity is killing me. I applied for a publication layout position that basically encompasses editing and compiling info into newsletters and pamphlets and getting it ready to print. It's a local non-profit that is mostly funded by grants so wondering if they're considering morphing two positions into one.

Wheelgarden, gardendmpls, with me being an occasional tight wad I bought the hand crank model. On the positive side I liked the height of the discharge compared to the Victorio, that I had in a prior life, but the down side is it only came with one screen tube different from what I believed I was ordering. The grandson loved helping but gosh darn he can talk a lot…… 😂😂😂

Cleaned the harvested garlic that has been curing, bundled it and hung it on the beam at our (unheated) kitchen entry, where it will stay all year for easy access as we cook.
Continued the weeding- spent 4 hours on that today. I filled 4 large black trash bags full. These (and more) will go to an acquaintance who picks them up to fill a very long and deep ditch on her property- this has been a years long project and is a win/win. I keep certain yard debris out of the landfill and she gets organic matter to compost in her ditch
Picked the first green beans and ate them- lightly steamed and tossed with evoo, a bit of fresh squeezed lemon juice, fresh garlic and some salt- as an appetizer while we made dinner.

I sure brought a bunch of work home with me yesterday! Got 3 dz pint jars from sis since I had only 6 left. Did grocery shopping on the way home. Car was getting pretty full. I found a table for new sewing machine, used to be a computer desk, but perfect size 42 x 22 with height of 27". Perfect. Found it at Habitat Restore in Cedar Rapids. $20. Also found a really nice small armless office chair on wheels for $5, no rips or wear of any kind! Got to the check out, the girl said desks are 50% off today. What???? $10 for the desk!! They loaded it all up for me after I rearranged everything in the car. Stopped at Dad's on the way home and picked up the cukes and jars to put them in. Found space in the car for all that. My passenger buddy was a stack of jars. Came home and checked on the garden, few beans, they have come to a lull. Lots of tomatoes though. So today it's pickle relish and dill pickles. Then Marinara sauce. Last night ran all the jars through the sanitize cycle in the dishwasher. Yard needs mowing, house needs vacuuming.....any volunteers?? . Amazing how things pile up after being gone just 2 days. And again, The Princess wouldn't come in the house while I was gone.

Shortly after we arrived to help mom's friend pack yesterday, her husband asked if we would be interested in any jars and of course I said yes. The only catch was that they needed the boxes back to transport the canned food on the shelves. So I filled every box I could find and ended up with over fifteen dozen of mostly jelly jars and pints and probably another dozen food jars I'll use for tintures, elixirs, salves and walnut ink. I was ecstatic to get some half gallon jars as well as I've been storing flour, sugar and cornmeal in them since one of us inadvertently bought a bag of locally ground meal contaminated with moth larva and now I'm paranoid. Jars need washed but repacked everything except for half-gallons and stored in the shed for now. I didn't see the sense in washing them and storing in the utility room only to have to move them again when I clean and rearrange out there.
Have an interview later and a quilt guild meeting this evening so spending the rest of the day with kiddo. Open house at school tomorrow evening and school starts next Wednesday. I'm really going to miss having her here during the day.

I spent quite a while out there today - I've been putting off things out there lately, due to this heat and humidity, just doing necessities! It did get to 90°, but the humidity was all the way down to 39°, and it hasn't been down that low for a long time! Much of the time was spent weedwacking (amazing how quickly that rain triggers those weeds in less than a day!), and I pulled up a few cukes that I thought had died, but was hard to tell, given the size of the vines, but that wasn't one of the things I was going to root through in that heat. I also trimmed many tomatoes, and pulled some weeds, though it's getting darker out earlier now, so I had to stop.

Yesterday I pulled my New Kuroda carrots and I would consider it a good harvest. My goal is to have all carrots of the same size and shape but producing that "store-bought" look can sometimes be like chasing rainbows so I am satisfied with what I grew. I put about 10 lbs. into the freeze-dryer and the rest of the 40-lb. harvest into the basement, aka. root cellar. The freeze-dried carrots make good, crunchy snacks that are healthy and last a long time. I put them into 1/2-gallon canning jars with moisture absorbers and they will last for well over a year. My thought is to have freeze-dried available for when the fresh produce is gone. This is "birthday week" as my wife's is Aug. 9, my daughter's Aug. 10, and mine Aug 12. We've been going out to dinner, cooking special meals, and just enjoying the good weather. It is also the beginning of the Erie County fair and we usually have over a million folks pass through the gates. Yesterday was our local 'Channel 2' TV station day at the fair and they had free admission if you brought canned goods, they filled over 4 tractor-trailer loads for the food pantry. As much as I like the fair, we are going to pass this year and concentrate on getting ahead in the garden and greenhouse. Here are the carrots...

Went for our usual walk. Prior to walking I gathered up everything for the cuke marathon today. 7 hours later had 14 quarts dill pickles, 14 pints relish and 4 trays of cukes for freezing. Only 3 trays made it to the freezer..... I still have at least 15 big cukes left. These were all big cukes from Dad's. Not turning yellow and quality was good. It only took slightly more than one cuke to fill a quart jar. For the fried ones, I peeled them and then stood them on end and cut the flesh off all sides, like you would corn. This avoids the seeds, which you don't want if frying them. The compost pile likes me today. Tomorrow is Marinara and more fried cukes.

Started the day watching granddaughter take her horse riding lesson. Then ran to Aldi to pick up a few things. Came home and picked green beans and a few cucumbers. Pulled some weeds but the mosquitos got too bad. Made fresh bruschetta for dinner then went to the concert in the park. Big Band music tonight. It was actually chilly out there. 64 degrees and the sky is clear. That full moon is huge.

More whittling away at the weeds. With all these rains I haven't been able to stay on top of the weeds. Not only do we have more weeds than in a typical year, so many of them have flowered and are going to seed and since I am a cold composter, I don't put those in my own compost pile. So I filled another big black trash bag and two smaller bags. Rain bursts came and went so we would weed for a while and then get chased inside for a while. Made two months worth of cat food for the freezer during one of the spells inside.
