Went to town yesterday. There was a sign at Aldi door, closed till 2 pm. Odd, never had that happen before. So Wally World next door got my money. Wasn't about to drive 10 miles to the other Aldi. Went to Fareway, something I rarely do. They had Jonagold apples for $.77/lb. Got 20 lbs to can. Nothing like creating work for myself! I have about that many pears in the basement near ripe enough to can, those are from Dad's trees and are way less prone to disease than the apples. His apples were not at all great this year.
When I got home, picked a bucket full of broccoli shoots. Went to junk store. My friend there asked if I wanted a watermelon, heck yes! Had them in her car and told me to take one. Got it home, cut it open. Delicious. Shared it and broccoli with neighbor. Today I think I'll start with the apples.....

Got a lot done yesterday. Started out sweeping leaves up and dumping them in the garden bed that I just covered in woodchips. Did that for a while until hubby got home and wanted to clean out the wood stove chimney. We clean it every year, so it wasn't real dirty. With that done and cleaned up, I went out to the garden and rearranged a cold frame. There is a huge patch of parsley in the cold frame, so I changed a few things so that it will have double coverage. Today I'll be touching up some paint around the wood burning stove hearth and then sweeping up more leaves for the garden beds. Looks like the wind has died down, so that's a good thing when spreading leaves. I'm working on painting a table I found at the thrift store. Started it the other day and really want to get it done before the weather changes, although they are calling for temps in the 70's next week so I may be able to take my time. Just won't be able to park my car in the garage for a few days.

Nothing yet today, but a LOT of leaves came down yesterday, so when it gets shady in the back (does this earlier now, than it did in the summer), I'll be out back getting some of those ground up for the garlic row. I didn't have quite enough when I planted.

Finished cleaning up along the lane, bagging up yesterday's chamisa trimmings, cutting back the Russian sage I am working to destroy, and raking up debris from the big rain storm last week. Then moved into our private yard and raked up two huge piles of pine needles , to be used for top mulch. More than I can use- a friend is going to take some of them for her landscaping. Had to bag up some of the needles as they have fallen aspen leaves mixed in, which are not suitable for compost or mulch. I'm a good tired tonight.

Yesterday after sweetheart had delivered grandkids to school and voted while I made a run to Menards for the proper pails, rollers and brushes we went to work staining the fence. Finished about 120’ of the pasture side that was previously painted by the girl on Wednesday then did both sides of 200’ to finish that section of fence. It was darn near dark and honestly we were both worn out but tickled that we had accomplished what we had set out to do. Today I’ll pickup 6 more gallons of stain that added to the 4 gallons that we have left should finish the project, weather permitting, this weekend. Yeah!!

Yesterday I got busy on the apples. Got out the apple peeler, whipped right through them. Ended up with 22 pints of cinnamon apples. Then moved on to other things. In the afternoon decided to do the pears. Got 8 pints of those. Now I'm putting canners away for a while. Mowed up the leaves in the back yard, uncovered lots of hidden "treasures".
Turned cloudy in the afternoon, hoping for rain, but nothing.

Got some stuff done yesterday, but not as much as I had planned. Ran to Aldi early, dropped off some winter coats at the thrift store. They are having a winter coat drive benefiting a woman's shelter. When I got home I finished painting the table I had started. Not sure if I like it though. It's going to be just for houseplants. We'll see when I put it in it's spot in a few days. Started sweeping up leaves and then realized that the bottom of the sweeper had separated so the leaves were just falling out. We kinda jimmy rigged it to work temporarily. I see a new lawn sweeper in our future. By the time we finished that and I was able to make a few passes with it and spread the leaves in the garden beds, it was almost dark and time for dinner. I don't like this getting dark early when there's things to be done outside yet. It rained all night, so everything is wet. Not sure if I'll get any leaves up today. Might have to clean house a little.

Putzed around the kitchen most of the morning. Then went out to tackle the hosta bed on North side of the house, covered knee deep in leaves! Had to remove the hosta leaves to get the leaves out. Ran a really long cord out there and vacuumed up the leaves, 2.5 bags full. The leaves were almost dust in the bag they were so dry.
Now I'm going to try making vegan cheese sauce using nutritional yeast. Something different.
Not a drop of rain from all the promises yesterday....

We planned on a day at home for my birthday but that didn't happen as we had a flat the evening before and our spare wasn't so great. So off to my parent's house to get a tire changed and then to town as hubby had a large sale. Stopped at Walmart for a few necessities, the bank and then home. Did take a minute to stop and take a picture of the basketball court at my old elementary school which has been under the waters of a lake until this year. We're still classified as D3 on the drought map and currently the lake is almost 5.5' under winter pool. Yesterday I went outside after it warmed up and had plans to do some organizing in the shed except it looked like rain and the cardboard would need to come out while I tried up. So spent time emptying pots in the holding area and adding the soil to the can of soil I use for containers. Then I took the shade cloth down and folded it up for winter. Still no rain, so I decided to run some bean vines and garden waste through the garden shredder and added it to the compost pile. I picked up two macrame plant hangers from a free table at a yard sale and discovered that the bigger one just wasn't salvageable. Since it was jute, I removed the wooden beads and cut the rest into sections and added to the compost pile too. Pulled a few persistent weeds that had popped up in the new garden and sifted a washtub of wood mulch before it was time to get kiddo off the bus. Kiddo wanted to go for a walk and I obliged since there won't be many warm evenings left. Leaves are just about at their peak and looking forward to them falling so I can collect them for mulch. Still haven't given up on getting the greenhouse up before spring but not dismantling the kennel one just yet. Little over a week until my podiatrist appointment.

Another fun morning out with Mr. Breezy!
Today was the last weekend for our local farmers' market, so the place was packed, & all the vendors were also giving out free candy to all the little tots (& parents) strolling around in costume. It was nice. I really can't believe it's the last weekend, because every vendor was bursting at the seams with stuff. What do they do with it all post market? I could have brought home a full carload & still wanted more. But I did manage to restrain myself. Came home with a bunch of Broccolini/Aspabroc, one each Delicata & Sweet Dumpling winter squashes, a large head of orange cauliflower (a Mr. Breezy's pick), a large bunch of Lacinato kale, a bag of savoyed spinach, some cayenne & Habanero peppers, & two nice large green tomatoes. I was hoping to get a couple of green tomatoes since I have a good Sara Moulton recipe for them fried with goat cheese & a homemade herb sauce on rolls, & I have both leftover rolls & goat cheese to use up. I was swooning over the heads of different lettuces the size of basketballs, but I simply do not have the room to put them anywhere.
Afterwards we stopped at one of our local little independent nurseries, where I snagged three HUGE (as in around 2-1/2' across the top) mums in yellow, a rusty orange, & a burgundy for the absolutely shockingly low price of $5 each!!!!! (Smaller sizes at Lowe's are going for $27.99 each!!!) Also got three six-packs of fall pansies, since I never got around to seeding my own this year.
Finished with a few Mr. Breezy errands. So all in all & busy but nice morning, & now I need to revise my weekly menu to take advantage of all this fresh food.

Started the morning joining other villagers as we resume protesting (The corporate owners of the resort near the city limits, after claiming to want to negotiate with in response to our first round of protests, have proven to be just as shady as the first go round so we're back at it and not going away).
Came home, cleaned up one perennial bed, then went to town, got our covid 19 vax, stopped at house in town to put in a part for the pond pump and then treated ourselves to an early dinner at Jambo Cafe- African/ Caribbean. Boy can that man cook!
I'm preparing for a down day tomorrow, since I have always had a strong reaction to the covid vax for about 30 hours. Last year I got it very late in the day and then slept through the worst part of the reaction, so repeated that this time. And the pharmacist mentioned that most people are not having as strong a reaction with this year's dose. So I'm hoping I will do better this year.

To the garden I went, planning to work some chopped leaves in to the north end of the garlic raised bed. No luck. Soil is like a brick. Peppers grew in that bed this season, and the soil wasn’t like what I found. This was yesterday. So I started trying to break up the soil, producing clods sized from golf balls to footballs. I worked in some chopped leaves, watered thoroughly, and left it to cure/soften until another day.
Today I stirred up the soil, but still not loose enough. This is the bed where I want to sink the pots of garlic bulbils. More water added, hoping the moist leaves will help soften the clods. Tomorrow…hell or high water…those pots are going in.
That’s it for gardening, except for slowly dismantling the various support systems in the raised beds. Everything needs secured against the winds of winter. Won’t be long. The days pass so quickly. We did deliver our ballots to the courthouse and made a trip to the library. Grocery shopping was supposed to happen, but I started feeling bad…needed to go home. In the meantime, fridge is getting roomier. Monday might be flu shots and grocery shopping.

Kiddo and I made a few treks outside but most of the day was spent inside. She likes "alone time," so I finished sketching out the grandmother's flower garden quilt I've been working on for a few years to get an idea of just how much more I need to add. Ended up stitching and adding a few new sections. I'd really like to finish it up and start hand quilting it this winter. Today will be birthday dinner with my parents. I requested peanut butter pie this time.
