I did look at the cantaloupe at Aldi, but they were kinda sad looking. Certainly not worth what they were asking for them.

Worked on quilt some yesterday after 2.3 mile walk in the a.m. Strange, I saw State Patrol 5 times on our walk, along with 1 city Police car. The day before we had quite a run on sirens etc, unusual for this small town. Wonder if they are looking for something or someone.
The stump grinder guy came in the afternoon, got all 4 stumps gone, he hauled away most of the chips and refilled with black dirt, then seeded. He offered to water the area, but I declined because I knew Princess would make a beeline out there. She could see the action from the window. So today I'll get out some extra fencing and fence the area off, then water it. Luckily his grinder just fit through the gate and we didn't have to remove any chain link fence. Quite a fancy machine, said he only been doing stumps for 6 months. Did a great job.
Cut down some perennials, speedwell, Baptisia and one huge clump of catmint. Picked a few tomatoes, once again the pile in the basement is growing.

Hubby is still in AFib and you know he isn't feeling well when he doesn't jump at the chance to go somewhere. I needed to renew the license on our car yesterday and stopped at a church sale afterwards. Picked up a sandwich bag stuffed with embroidery floss, a few old kitchen implements and a Deluth Boonie hat for hubby and then headed to the thrift store where I found two nice floating shelves, a DVD and six fat quarters of fabric. Spent less than $15 total. I had decided earlier that I would just grab a few groceries at Walmart but then I realized that Kroger had Jimmy Dean sausage and 18-packs of eggs on sale, so stopped there too which was good as I found more boxes.
Kiddo's aide was sick yesterday and a sub actually showed up and did well with her which was awesome. I asked another aide if she would be willing to get kiddo on the bus last evening and she said she would. She came home one happy kid but was even happier this morning knowing her aide would be back. I'm happy to have such a caring person in kiddo's life and even happier that I have people keeping an eye on her when her aide isn't there. Meeting is still scheduled next week and I've asked the advocate to join in as we really need to get some problems solved.
Today is another dreary day and I've already watched an episode of Garden Rescue and will be heading outside soon. Mom needs tomatoes and said paste tomatoes would be great since theirs are finished. Also need to grab a few more of the trial peppers for her to sample and check the progress of those trial beans that are about ready for harvest. I'm sure there will be more noodle beans too. My main goal for today is to walk around and take some notes on projects I want to tackle in the near future. I originally had a sidewalk on the back burner but the grass died in the pathway due to the drought and the rain is turning it into mud. Probably just some pavers placed along the way for now but something that should have been tackled twenty-five years ago.

After it warmed up some yesterday, I went out and got some fencing down from up top in garage. Put it around the newly seeded area where stumps were removed. Then thought, I think I'll lay the tomato cages on top of the ground to keep the Princess out. The fence is only 2 ft and she can easily hurdle that. The cages filled the area perfectly and will be stored there for the Winter. Watered it down good, which I'll be having to do twice a day. No rain in the next 2 weeks!!!! Talked to sis, we are going to Balltown this Saturday. They are having Balltown Street Days, should be fun. It's a tiny town of 100 people. Quite picturesque, on hills above the Mississippi. Today I'm off for dr appts with the folks, then grocery shopping, banking, and haircuts. There's a 2-3 hr window between appts and haircuts so maybe we will go eat at Pizza Ranch, Dad's fave place. Then tomorrow the new freezer is coming. I have a friend coming tonight to help me move the basement fridge over about a foot since the new freezer will go next to it. Then I can rearrange the seed starting shelves all to one wall and do a good cleaning under them.

Well the plans to be outside yesterday turned out to be dashing in and out between showers to gather peppers and tomatoes for mom. Today started with calls to the cardiologist as hubby has been in AFib for a week now and can't maneuver from room to room without stopping to catch his breath. They're working him late morning and hopefully can figure something out. It was raining when I took kiddo to the bus and I decided to start cleaning. When it did clear up I already had a big mess so stuck with it. On the bright side I did find two small seed orders that I misplaced last winter.
Speaking of winter, I'm totally unprepared. Haven't made a place for the plants that need to come inside or took any cuttings yet. Maybe if I keep procrastinating the first frost will suppress itself until the end of the month.

Or, you might get that unpredicted frost and the problem is solved, emmsmommy. Iβve had years when I wished for a frost to solve the procrastination of dealing with plants that need protection. Iβm getting there this year.

Yesterday was full speed ahead busy. Went for walk, did some laundry and house cleaning up before heading to Dad's at 1000. Got through the dr appts, made next year's appts. Went to eat at Pizza Ranch. Went to bank, the folks refuse to use direct deposit...... Went to Aldi. Got to the hair place at 2:45, got haircuts done. Unbelievable, the woman only charges $6 for a haircut!!! She says she caters to the elderly who cannot afford more, and those that can pay her more in the way of hefty tips. Heck, I'd pay her $20 in a heartbeat! Amazing woman.
Planning to rip out the remaining 4 San Marzano plants in the next week. I'll need those cages to cover the newly dug garlic bed once I get the ground soft enough to dig. Only way to keep Princess off it since I have removed the garden wire gate section. Leaves really aren't falling yet, some are thinking about it. At this rate I'll be cleaning up leaves well into November. No tree color to speak of here.

Well, freezer half unloaded. The applliance store called and said they thought I had ordered Maytag, then realized it was Amana. So delivery put off til Monday. Got a message from farmer friend that said to come help myself to sweet corn and apples. Huh?? Sweet corn in October?? Yup, they plant really late. Lots of worms but that's proof no to little spray was used. Looks good, will have some for supper. The apples are huge, got a bunch of those since Dad's were awful this year. Had to get the apple picker pole to get them off the tree. I'll make applesauce and can the corn.
Lots of work for Sunday!! Another warm and breezy day. And dust in the air. I brought lots of Asian beetles home with me from the farm. Went out and picked broccoli side shoots, a few tomatoes and dry bean pods.

Did some more garden clean up. Took down all the netting on the green beans. We haven't seen any rabbits lately. Could be because of all the coyotes we hear howling every night. Dug the garlic bed again, added chicken poop and some shredded leaves. Started digging the onion bed for next year but ran out of steam. Did manage to clean up the old greenhouse, which is just storage now. Beautiful day. Sunny breezy and warm, but not too warm. Sat on the deck for a while and enjoyed the sun.

Mostly doing research on hydroponic garden towers. The local food bank was gifted with three units, and a well meaning soul set them up and planted them, then left town with no instructions on how to maintain them. Took it on as a project with the food bank director, and culinary program manager through the CG. Not purely organic I know, but will be applying as many organic options as we can. Also learned the food bank has a couple of raised beds that could use some love. And here I was wondering if I could find enough planting space...Wish me luck.

I know I've already said this but, the veggie garden is in an identity misunderstanding. It looks like early/mid August out there and it's like I'm in the dog days of summer- just watching it do its thing with little from me. Tomatoes are coming on strong on 5 of the 7 plants. Pumpkins are ripening on still lush green vines, chiles are still producing on green, leafy plants, the 5 basil plants have rejuvenated a third time after two cuttings and are green and lush, and the volunteer lettuce plants are large and robust. I'm usually starting to clean up beds by now and feeding them for their winter nap and especially getting the garlic bed ready. Most likely won't be doing any Fall prep for at least 2-3 weeks. Looks like garlic will go in on the later side (November) this year.
