Yesterday seemed extremely long. Saw a PA at the cardiologist's office and she said she'd like to consult with the cardiologist on duty. An hour later in walks this man with an amazing personality and he proceeds to explain more about hubby's condition that anyone has to date. Plan is to try a new medication which the pharmacy had to order, and go back next week for a follow-up and to discuss further options. Fingers crossed everything is back to normal by then. If not there's the possibility of shocking the heart back into rhythm or possibly an ablation.
Kiddo was having a rough day at school and Mom went and picked her up. I wondered if she was possibly getting sick as I'm getting a cold, but mom said she was fine all afternoon. Both her aide and mom said she has been mentioning her dad often so she's very aware that something isn't quite right. I've been very tempted to pull her from school but have decided instead to keep her enrolled as she has an awesome teacher and aide this year. I will simply state the other issues and demand compliance or else I will file a discrimination complaint every day if I need to. Also acquired a doctor's prescription for her to continue carrying a stuffed animal for comfort as she refuses to go to school without it. Until she can tell me what or who is causing her so much distress at school, I will fight for her to keep it.
On the gardening front... nada. Hopefully I can sneak out this morning and get the winter peas in the ground.

I went to get one of my cold frames, which I thought I needed to make a modification to due to the orientation at the new place. I originally made it to be taken apart so it could be more easily moved. I got the pieces I needed, a pencil, a saw, and a combination square. I measured the first dimension from the "good" side and then grabbed the "bad" side that I intended to modify. Lo and behold, it was already done! Contrary to my memory, I built both sides the same, so I didn't need to do a thing! So I declared victory and put the tools away. Whew, that was exhausting. I think I'll sit on the couch and drink some tea. Rest up for tomorrow, ya know.

Not something I did today, but I'll go here Monday. For those with a lidl in your area, 2 things (actually a few more in the seafood section) jumped out at me - in a group of "5 for $10" deals they have their 5 lbs of whole wheat flour (normally $2.99, which is still good!) and gallons of white vinegar (good time of year for pickling). I don't know what other good deals are included in the 5 for $10 - I'll maybe see more in the store that I use.

Six medicines were presented, two were automatically excluded because of the pacemaker and two more excluded due to other health issues. Of the two left, this one had the least side effects.

It was time. I started to tackle clean up of what we call the "forest". It's a strip of the property along the lane that has an adobe wall for privacy. The prior owner planted several trees that add even more privacy and help shade/cool the house in summer. 2 ponderosa pines, 1 piñon pine, 3 aspen, 3 paperbirch, 1 hawthorne, 1 mugo pine. Mostly I clean it up for wild fire protection. Lots of pine cones and pine needles. I leave some of the older needles for mulch but clean up all the fresher, crispy needles and pine cones. Got not quite half done.
Will rake the leaves once they fall and crush them for mulch in the veggie garden and will save the fresher needles to put on top of the leaves (holds them down well throughout the winter).

Yesterday was great fun. Sis and I headed out at 0715 for Balltown. Got there without incident. Spent 2 hours browsing and then choosing our squash. Loaded up in car then parked closer to the restaurant. Decided to eat there, buffet. OK, but don't think I'd do it again. Not a huge selection. Then we sat in the car in the shade for a bit to rest. Very windy and warm day, but we were high a hill overlooking a valley and the Mighty Miss in the distance. Then decided to take the back roads home since we encountered a section of what was miles and miles of one lane traffic on the super slab. Glad we did that, we came upon a town with a store selling fall produce. Found some squash we didn't see at Balltown. In Balltown got one call Cushaw, huge things for $1.99 each, edible. And Cheddar, also edible but quite watery they said. Looks like a giant pumpkin. Sis got one of those. I ended up with 2 Cushaw for decoration, 2 buttercup and 1 silver bell. Then since we were on backroads, decided to go through Amish country again. That's where our navigation went to heck. Anyway I had been looking for cabbage all day, found some at an Amish farm, the girl even had to go out and cut more! Ended up with 24 lbs to re-make Dad's kraut with, but I'll do it here at home. The sweet corn I got the other day from farmer friend was not all that great, not very sweet, possibly due to the lack of rain. Now for getting home, sis once again had her navigation going, supposedly in sync with mine which was on the screen, we went in a giant circle and ended up in the far NE corner of Amish country, where we began!!! We had a good laugh over that. By then it was 4 pm, finally found our bearings and entered more familiar ground. Made it home by 0530 pm.
Unloaded the car. Went to the garden for tomatoes and bean pods. Broccoli will be picked today. And sauerkraut will be started.

Mr. Breezy & I enjoyed a very nice morning. First stop was at our favorite little independent local nursery that specializes in native plants. Today was unofficially the last day of his "season" (even though he remains open throughout the year on a self-serve/honesty basis), so he was offering 25% off everything. I scored two full & bushy gallon pots of two different types of Mountain Mint - one aggressive & one not so much. The owner has lovely display gardens, so I was able to see the "aggressiveness" of each in situ, which was nice. Also bought a gallon pot of a nice largish-flowering deep lavender native aster & a nice bushy Italian oregano, which I plan to put in a medium-size plastic pot to spend the winter on a south-facing sill to use for winter cooking. Owner always tosses me a freebie or two since we're regular customers, & this time was no exception - two pots each containing two nice bushy Italian flat-leaf parsley plants which I also plan to overwinter indoors for cooking.
Afterwards we made a quick stop at Walmart for a couple of basics I needed for this weeks' menus, & the rest of this lovely day was just spent puttering. Nice way to spend a Sunday.

103 degrees today and the good folks at U of A Extension say it's time to plant my cool season crops. Well, ok. Threw in cilantro and kale, tomorrow I'll start some root crops in containers. This region is is so not intuitive yet.

Finished cleaning up the "Forest" today. In total 11 well stuffed, big contractor sized black plastic bags. They will be going to an acquaintance's house, who is filling in a ravine with all the yard waste she can collect.

Not much gardening this weekend but happy to say I made some progress. Finally got some irises transplanted to their temporary home and three more beds cleaned out in the old garden. Was up early yesterday and planted winter peas in those three beds and notes that the diakon radishes are up and doing great. October is a month of many birthdays and we celebrated my aunt's birthday today as it's in a few days. Ended up on a candy making venture and your's truly was in charge of dipping them in chocolate, which rates high on my list of things I truly dislike doing. Also I must share the biggest potato of my parent's harvest. This particular one weighed a little over 1 lb. 10 oz. and is just one of several massive potatoes from their garden this year.

Yesterday was quite breezy and chilly, but still upper 60's. Put another pot of tomatoes on to cook down for paste. Sis and I got busy on the kraut, 25# in the crock. Now to wait 6 weeks. Tomatoes have slowed with ripening. They are very green with no sign of breaker stage. Might rip them out today or tomorrow. Decided the corn I got from farmer friend was not worthy of canning or freezing, so it went to the tree dump. I could have added sugar to it, but decided not, have never done that and didn't want to waste my time. It's not the same as the natural sweetness IMO.
Sis left around noon. I continued on with broccoli freezing. Still finding cabbage worms which is so wrong for this time of year! For supper, cooked a Honeynut butternut squash, the last of the green beans and some ginger fried rice from the freezer.

Another beautiful day yesterday. Got a lot of little things accomplished. Took down a brown light fixture in the front hall and spray painted it black. Color scheme has changed a little and I like that light fixture. Turned out perfect. Worked some more on the wood chip spreading. Cut down some of the dead Joe Pye Weed. Left a lot up for the birds to peck at. Had to caulk one of the plastic panels back in on the old greenhouse. The panel that was coming out was on the side where the blackberry bushes are. Needless to say it was kind of a mess. Almost got as much caulk on me as I got on the panel, a few scratches too, but it's done. Going to make a run to the thrift shop with the tablecloths my ex-mother-in-law gave me years ago. I've seen video's of people that make clothing out of vintage tablecloths. Hopefully someone will rescue these.
