Today is a recovery day. Yesterday laid out cardboard in an area where I want to control weeds. Then spent hours digging out deep rooted 'weeds' from the gravel driveway. They were in a neglected bend of the circle drive. Even my fingers were sore last night. Still have more to do. For another day.

Today I took up the 40' long 4' wide strip of plastic, that was solarizing that strip all summer, for my garlic, which is where that will go this fall, in 3 strips. I also sprayed some "safe" Weed Zap weed killer, on some things in the area - I'll wait a few days, maybe until after it rains here (finally!), and loosens it up, as it is rock hard now. I picked some smaller tomatoes, a few eggplants, but not much else. On the topic of herbs, and other seeds, yesterday I saw a PBS show by accident - it was on when I turned the TV on, so I rewound it to the beginning, and watched it all - Movers and Makers - City Of Soil: A look at Philadelphia's Urban Agriculture. I couldn't stop watching it, and how some of these people were getting people into farming, when they had "never touched any soil in their life"! And I noticed this seed company, I had never seen before, that is sort of a local non-profit company, that actually sells seeds from many different farmers, and when I checked the website, I saw a number of unusual seeds I have seen before, and some I've gotten before, but not had luck with, so I tried them again! Every seed pack is $5.00 - not super cheap, but most with a good number of seeds, and it was only $4.54 for shipping 8 packs. Here's the link: trueloveseeds.com/collections/vegetables-and-grainsThe unusual herbs I got are HUACATAY - a South American herb, that is in the Marigold family, and is also called "Black Mint", and has flavor similar to cilantro, with other flavors. Tried this year's ago, but no germination. QUILLQUIÑA - a.k.a. Bolivian Coriander. Another South American herb, also used in southern Mexico, which is what interests me. SHEVID - a.k.a. Persian Dill. Piqued my interest, to see if it will be more for leaves, than seeds. LEBANESE ZA'ATAR - The true za'atar, I got from Baker Creek years ago, but didn't do well, so I'll try again. Another unusual thing that I ordered, that I grew one variety of years ago, from Trade Winds Fruit, was Pea Eggplant this one is DARK PEA EGGPLANT - this one from Central America, and only 4-5' tall, compared to the one I grew that was over 8' tall! Similar bitter flavor, which I only use for Thai curries. Another thing I ordered was a MIZUNA LANDRACE - a broadleaf variety I've never seen before, so I had to try it. There were a couple of other things I just ordered as replacements, for old seeds, not unusual ones, like the rest.

Spent the day in my chair on the mend. Tonight I’m feeling about 70% with hopes of more recovery by morning. Negotiated with sweetheart to let me do the chores tonight and made a mental list of little things I can do tomorrow with sweetheart taking care of her Monday obligations at the daughter’s house.

Got more than enough space ready for the winter garden - lettuce, spinach, arugula, garlic. I'm sore.

Pepperhead, that looks like a good source. I'e bought huacatay paste in the past. I think I made some sort of sauce with it, or maybe used it as (part of) a rub. Cant remember what it tastes like.

Busy weekend starting with estate sale Friday. Found several things to resale and a few to keep including a chair as a project (like I needed another). Told hubby the name your own price yard sale was going on the previous day but I didn't have time to stop, so we headed to it where we finished filling up the car. I ended up with an old colander, metal funnel and another shovel head for the garden and hubby brought home another enamel pot that another vendor gave him on Saturday. Seems my whimsical garden decorating is becoming well-known. Saturday I took tomatoes out of the freezer and cooked down to make 3 pints of sauce. I've since put 4 times as many tomatoes in the freezer, so more sauce in the near future. Yesterday I sorted my saved seeds and labeled them a bit better. Some of the earlier harvested beans are dry enough to store and did that as well as just about all of my varieties are starting to produce seed now and my seed starting set-up has turned into a seed-drying station. Today I harvested any beans pods that are nearly dry as we are predicted to get some rain the next few days and I didn't want to risk any sprouting in the pods. Continued working on getting the yard mowed and finally bundled up greenhouse pieces by part number and put them in the shed. Hubby shredded leaves and chestnut burrs when he got home and I need to get the compost bin patched back up before I add more to it. Really should have cleaned off three beds in preparation for winter peas but decided to prioritize.

Such a beautiful warm, sunny late summer day today, so we decided to goof off again. I finished power washing deck in the morning, hubby finished helping a friend with his pontoon by noon, so we decided to enjoy the rest of the day and went out on the boat. What a beautiful day, Hardly any boat traffic. Stopped for lunch and then just enjoyed the day. Got home and we weren't that hungry due to the late lunch, so we had cereal for dinner. Lucky Charms for hubby, Honey Nut Cheerios for me. My kind of cooking. Tomorrow I'll put the deck kind of back together. Going to put some pots back, but some of the pots of petunias are pretty raggedy and need to go. They were so pretty this year. Potted Hibiscus, Marigolds and a potted Dahlia will stay until the weather cools down. Supposed to be in the 80's all week.

I'm fighting a cold, so wrapped up with a blankie , read and dozed all day, drank Chinese herbs and am starting to feel better. It was a grey, rainy day so it was perfect for snuggling in.

Went to a quilt shop in a nearby small town and got the rest of the fabric needed for next quilt. Washed it when I got home. Went out and picked a few tomatoes and a bucket of broccoli, it seems to be doing better since I've broken down and water it every 3 days. Picked first yellow crookneck squash, late crop. A friend gave me a flat of small cukes, will make pickles out of them today. Need to get the onions and shallots put away in basement fridge and shuck the pea pods for saved seed. Been picking bean pods as they turn yellow, quite a pile of them. I may be cooking those as dry beans this winter, so many I'd never plant them all.

I did some additional, relatively minor, work for the winter garden. I thought I needed to bend some new hoops for the covers, so I went looking for the bender (it's somewhere in the barn or shed, I dunno), and some 10 foot conduit (same). Found 'em! I even found two conduit that had previously been bent, so saved some work. I thought I had more, just didn't know where they were after the move. Got 'em all set up, ready for the Agribon and Tuflite which will keep the winter lettuce and such alive over the winter. At least, they've worked in past. I might modify and install one of the old cold frames as well - but not today.
I'm pretty much always starting some lettuce, some of which has now been transplanted under the hoops - BSS (green leaf), Monte Carlo (green romaine), Little Leprechaun (red romaine), and Magenta (crisp, not my fave) lettuce. The rest of the winter greens are still in little starter cells waiting to get big enough to be transplanted - arugula, sorrel, more lettuce. They're not all coming up, but what else is new? I direct sowed some spinach under the hoops today.
I also braced up a bit of the garden. This is about the fourth one I've built, and I've gotten smarter about it each time, but this one was built late and in a rush, so it's a bit wobbly. Maybe I'll try to fix some of that over the winter. Also, I thought it was big enough (between previous sizes), but I may need to expand it next spring. Ugh - mo' work.

Most productive day I've had in a while. Walked early. Came home and decided to take care of the onions/shallots. But first had to clean the basement fridge, inside and out. Cleaned outside of deep freeze, icky!! Things didn't get cleaned last Fall due to DH's illness. It was in bad need of cleaning. Got it done, then the onions/shallots put in the 2 drawers. Also put the potatoes away in the fruit room along with the garlic for planting. Then proceeded to clean the seed starting area, shelves, etc. Wiped down all the lights/shelves. Vacuumed the entire room which is 1/2 of the basement. Didn't realize it was so bad..... . Spent 4 hours total in that basement room. Tomorrow I need to do the laundry/furnace room side. Did lots of laundry of old towels, rugs, etc that had been piling up. Made 5 pints of dill pickles from the cukes friend gave me. Went out and picked beans and lots of partially dried ones. Put on my new license plates, got personalized ones that say "SEW SOW". My 2 favorite things to do!! We are so looking forward to cooler temps and rain this weekend! Especially the RAIN!!! So tomorrow is more basement cleaning, tomatoes to cook down for paste and maybe a little time to spend on cutting quilt pieces. It has been 2.5 weeks since yard has been mowed, as soon as it cools off I will at least do the back yard. Plus I have started a list for when DS comes in 2-3 weeks.
