Today was my 50th!! annual Indian Love Feast. Even though I had great help over the past 3 days I somehow got behind. So today was busier than usual. Had to push to get things done so that I could be a guest at my own party. It was a wonderful gathering and the food as tasty as ever. I'm beat tonight.

Yesterday sweetheart and I spent the day traveling to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Beautiful weather and good roads made for a nice trip. We’ll spend a few days wondering around before returning to reality.

Yesterday after the canning was done I went to the big city. Our non-profit Cedar Valley Hospice was having their annual Release and Remember Event. Food, live music, kid's activities and release of 1000 Monarch butterflies at the Riverloop Amphitheatre on the Cedar River, in memory of those we have lost. It was a very touching program and so awesome to see 1000 butterflies released. The weather was perfect, cool and sunny with a light breeze.

o awesome to see 1000 butterflies released. Wonder if any of the butterflies will survive the trip south. At least they were released in the early fall.

Where do you suppose they got 1000 butterflies to release?

Yesterday I pretty much puttered inside as I needed to be within earshot of kiddo. Her foot is tender and several piggyback rides to the bathroom. Went out last evening and harvested a few more dried beans pods. Dropped to 38° last night so I really need to get prepared for the imminent frost though the forecast predicts normal temps for now.

Yesterday was pretty much a day of rest, garden wise. I did water the newly seeded cover crop, watered dahlias, and sprayed rabbit/deer repellent on important plants.
Saw the groundhog again. Set the trap for the groundhog…got a raccoon. Again.

Spent the morning getting things put away and back in order after yesterday's big feast. I always make a lot of extras to freeze so that we can have quick homemade dinners. Then we vegged all afternoon and watch a movie after an early(leftovers) dinner.
I need to get out to the garden and harvest chiles and green beans. It was neglected for a few days. Peaches too. Hopefully tomorrow, Wednesday for sure.

Went outside and grabbed a few more dried beans pods. One dry bean mix is approximately half finished, while another is getting started. Checked on plants in kennel greenhouse and watered those that needed it. Need to make room to bring them inside for the winter. Otherwise my goal was to get kiddo up and walking more. Dressed her wound and wrapped her foot in sports bandage to be less bulky and then I gave her her Crocs as I thought that would make navigating through the house easier. Miraculously the cut is mostly in the arch and side of her foot and not on the flat, which hopefully will make the healing process a little less painful. We walked in the yard for a bit and she loved the Crocs so much that she refused to take them off until bath time, and then they immediately went back on and to bed with her. Not confident that she'll make it through the entire day of school, but she wants to go back and I'll be on call if she needs to come home. PTO was last evening and I went as it was the first meeting of the year and lots to discuss.
Hubby brought me home some garden treasures Sunday - an ornamental tricycle planter which had three old enamel baking pans in the included pot and eleven files that he bought for an entire $1. I was ecstatic to see the files were an assortment as the last one I bought at the local hardware store was over $10. The baking pans are already in use as each one holds six 4" pots.
Today I'm hoping to shred some garden waste. When my uncle moved from my grandparent's house, we gathered up what he couldn't take with him and sold to get him extra cash. There was ab electric chipper/shredder that no one had an interest in, so we bought it for ourselves and after making an elongated chute and hopper, it's been a good purchase. Hubby pulled it out for me a few weeks ago and the belt broke. Found a replacement on Amazon and it arrived last evening. So hopefully I'll be back in business soon as I already have a medium-sized trash can full and waiting to be shredded.

Yesterday was a busy outdoor day. I cut down all the asparagus ferns, so thick! And full of very tall grasses and weeds. And I wanted to get rid of a lot of the "red" asparagus berries before they turn red and fall. If I let the garden go next year I think it would all be asparagus! It's everywhere. Thanks to all the rain this summer, but now we complain because it's so dry. Got 9 totes full of ferns. Ripped out another tomato plant and a sunflower that had no seeds left. Started ripping out the Cardinal Vine that overtook many things. Right now it's thundering off and on with a light sprinkle here and there. Just a tease.
Playing in fabric this morning. It's getting to be that time of year.

Minor prep for the winter garden, aka weeding. It's not my favorite activity by a long shot, but I gotta get the garlic in and stagger the winter lettuce and spinach when the times are right, and I don't want to be late.
I'm eyeballing my Persephone Day (+/-10 hours of sunlight) for the various greens and planning ahead. I do a MUCH smaller and MUCH simpler version of what Eliot Coleman does in Maine.
Winter lettuce is THE BEST! I've been down into the teens multiple times with no loss. It's like having a giant outdoor refrigerator full of homegrown lettuce and other greens. I might need to prematurely pull some tomato plants to make room.
Speaking of which, I might as well pull all of the pepper plants, as they've been a huge bust - 10-15 plants, 5 peppers.
Due to moving and associated projects my garden was delayed in many ways, but the paste tomatos which I planted crazy late are finally starting to ripen, while the others are dying off. I hope to make one or two larger batches of experimental sauce and freeze them before it gets too cold, but I'm back in a more rural area which of course runs cooler.
Mowed a couple of paths. I have a pretty good bead on the areas which the former owner mowed (pretty much everything) and which I'll continue to let go wild (pretty much everything). I don't have the prettiest land around, but I dare say that I'm trying to make it some of the best. And we all know where beauty lies.
Chestnut burrs are falling. Still green, none split. I was too busy last fall/winter to roast any, but by gosh and by golly I'm gonna roast some this year! As far as I know my trees are all Chinese chestnuts, not any of the toxic varieties, and certainly not American chestnuts. I started to read up (again) on when to harvest them.
The weather is freakin' awesome here lately, and I'm finally able to enjoy a few small bits of it.

Temps in triple digits. Too hot to do much until this evening or in the morning. Attended my first board meeting today for the new to me CG. Nice group, very organized. Managed not to volunteer for much. Annual strategic planning session is in a couple weeks.

Failed again at catching that pesky groundhog…raccoon #3 beat him to the carrots and tomatoes.
Picked another nice bunch of tomatoes…mostly Beefy Boy and Big Beef, along with some Juliets.
Worked on pulling weeds from around the house foundation and in the flower garden. Hubby finished taking down the asparagus forest. He bought one of those heavy duty battery powered string trimmers that needs a harness to support it. It makes quick work of the weeds, but it’s too heavy for me, so I’ll stick to the lightweight Black & Decker model.
Watered Dahlias again…it’s an every other day thing to do. Then I cut some blooms for the kitchen table.
Gardening day is done.

Did the 2 week grocery shopping today. Then out to the garden when I got home. Harvested a big basket of chiles and the last of the green beans. Pulled out all the bean plants- the start of the Fall garden cleanup! Also picked a big bunch of basil and made pesto for the freezer- 4 half pints. Finished the day watching the debate and some commentary afterwards. It's late, I'm wound up and hope I will fall asleep without too much delay.
