It's supposed to rain tomorrow, so I'll be cooking and freezing tomatoes too. I have San Marzano. Pulled most of them due to the fact that the plants are just stems, no leaves. Today is just a beautiful summer day., Warm, breezy, sunny, just perfect. Cleaned up a couple of the empty beds where onions and garlic were. Dumped a couple of chicken poop into the bed where onions were. Hubby wanted to take a ride to Menards, but I don't want to waste a beautiful day like today in a store.

This morning on the news they said Covid was on the increase again but that the strain was a weakened version on Covid. Going back to work I figured I should be protected while transporting the kids. Made an appt online @ CVS and appt was for 11:00 a.m.
So I worked a little in the garden putting down garden fabric between the raised beds to kill weeds and grass and picked more tomatoes to process and some German Pinks to ripened. While others are still green I pick whatever has red on it so the nutrition goes to the rest of the fruit.
Then I went to get it so wound up without Jesse as it was too warm to leave her in the car. After the shot went to pick her up at home and we headed out to the park stopping first to get the doggie bags. After the walk we went to a fish restaurant and picked up some broiled scallops for an early LINNER. Time for a nap then we will go back outside to lay more fabric.

Open house at school went great! Such a different atmosphere and kiddo immediately ran up and hugged her teacher first thing which surprised us all as this was the first time she'd met her. Hoping for a good school year.
I don't think I even walked to either garden today which is highly unusual. Tomorrow is an early dismissal day so I'll probably start to work as soon as kiddo is on the bus and work until she gets home.

Sold six chickens to a friend today. Charged her pre-inflation price ($20). Saw the same varieties of started pullets on sale from My Pet Chickens" today. Copper Marans on sale for $94.99, Gold Laced Wyandotte $59.99, Buff Orpington $49.99. If I assume a Blue Copper Marans to be around $99.99 (non-sale price for Marans) and a barred rock to be around the same as a Buff Orpington ($49.99) and the Ancona to be around the price of a brown leghorn ($49.99) I could have charged $404.94, but she's my friend and that's crazy and I didn't. Their highest priced pullet was a Blue Silkie Bantam for $159.99. Hmm... perhaps a new side income.
In the late afternoon I went out and weeded and planted some bush beans along the edges of a bed. Mowed some. Topped off the soil in about a third of the potatoes in grow bags on the driveway. They form potatoes on the stems, so if you keep adding soil as they grow, you can get a lot more potatoes.

The last couple of weeks have been busy to say the least. A couple of days in Chicago with one grandson who had a second surgery to remove the rest of a tumor that was missed when he had the first surgery in May. A week later another grandson, who had his first heart surgery when he was 6 days old and has had 7 more since then, under went another procedure that was needed as he grows. Both boys are doing well and we’re hoping hoping that hospital visits will be in the rear view mirror for awhile. So sweetheart and I have picked up lawn care duties for the family that was in Chicago for 10 days.
Yesterday as sweetheart was at her dads to give his freezer a long overdue cleaning out I gave our bushes a much needed haircut. She came home with a couple of totes of frozen food that were long past being consumable. Since I already had a good sized brush pile to burn out in the pasture, and was adding to it, I disposed of the outdated items in the burn pile which I later put a match to. Disposal problem solved…..
I’ve been bothered by a strained sciatic nerve for the past few weeks I finally gave into going to the chiropractor for some help. X-ray’s showed that adjustments and exercises to stretch will needed to get some relief from the pain.

Yesterday was day 5 of the Paxlovid. The only bad thing about it for me was the metallic taste, side effect. Nothing tasted good so hadn't been eating much. Today the taste is going away. Still tired and no energy. Been putzing around the house though. A little of this and that, then rest. 2 naps today. I am hoping tomorrow will be better and I can get outside to the garden with cooler temps.

I used a stainless steel pot instead of cast iron to avoid potential metallic taste issues I've never noticed a metallic taste, using the cast iron. Maybe my palette isn't refined enough? I like the idea of caramelizing the onions. Will try that the next time I have tomatoes. And congrats on finishing the big/expensive projects. The small stuff can often be fun projects.

reuben Sometimes cast iron needs to be re-seasoned. Cooking lots of acidic foods like tomatoes can damage the "seasoning".

I had marinara sauce simmering all day yesterday. Took me half the day just to get it together. Put in fridge last night. Pressure canning it today in the electric canner. Made myself go outside and to the garden. Dug the row of carrots. Wow, what a motley crew they are! Will post pic once I get them cleaned up. Did cleanup and got 3 totes full pretty quickly. Enough of that for today. Felt good to get busy, does wonders for the mental attitude! Gonna rest now.
