Went to Hobby Lobby for some candle wicks and wound up buying a new table lamp for the family room. The one in there now is from the 80's that I bought right after my divorce. Found them on the clearance shelf for $11.99. Figured it was about time for a change. When I got home I made a loaf of banana bread per request from granddaughter and the 3 bananas on the counter were perfectly over ripe. With that done, it's off to the garden now.

Except for indoor puttering, pretty much just watered today. I had been remiss & let the watering go after the 5" we got last weekend, so it was definitely past time, although thankfully everything still looked okay. Have another "Ichiban-style" eggplant reaching picking size & an apparently accidental seed "Black Beauty" eggplant getting size (was supposed to be a "Fingerling Blend"). Also found a flock of Shishito peppers ready to be picked & seared up to serve with a dip. Maybe we'll have some sushi next week & use the peppers as an appetizer.

I stayed outside after kiddo got on the bus and started tackling the paste tomatoes. Got 1/2 large trashcan of leaves trimmed off and harvested about a dozen tomatoes. Definitely only one row in a bed next year and possibly use wire instead of twine to corral them. Made a mental list of chores for the day and thankfully had everything done by 2:00 so came inside to empty the bean pods from my pockets and wait for the rain (which never happened). I managed to go a couple of days with little ankle pain but it decided to let me know I'd probably overdone it today. This evening has been a combination of watching some Gardeners World reruns on YouTube and dozing off.

Wednesday after the chiropractor appointment, with rain in the forecast, I decided that I would get the yard mowed. While I was mowing sweetheart took to mowing around the garden area and ditch with the old John Deere. Soon she was flagging me down as she was stuck in a hole. Pulled her out with the Kubota tractor and went back to mowing. Later I see her running my weed eater which is bigger and heavier than hers, but hers has issues, even though she knows I don’t want her hurting herself using it.
Thursday I took an unexpected trip to the Illinois State Fair with the FIL. He enjoys going every couple of years and somehow I get elected to go along. When sweetheart got home from work she was complaining about her back hurting. How did I know that could be an issue?
This morning I called the bone cracker and made an appointment for sweetheart later this afternoon. Spent what seemed to be all day in the kitchen making smoked vegetables for sweetheart to take to work and making supper for the stepson and his family. Braided and seasoned a pork loin before putting it on the smoker, oven roasted new potatoes and corn on the cob kept me busy all afternoon. It was a pretty darn good day…….

Started the morning at the weekly protest we participate in (at the beginning of the driveway to the resort hoping to pollute our creek). Lots of good progress, on several levels, in our efforts to stop this from going through.
When we got home we stripped the last 2 sections of the kitchen floor and went over the first section we did. It is obvious that we improved our technique/skill as we worked out way down the length of the floor. There's a couple of spots we might do another pass on , but are leaving it until tomorrow to see what it looks like once it is thoroughly dry. Next step will be to oil the floor but that will be next week sometime.
I need to get out to the veggie garden to do some things but got so caught up in the floor project that all the gardens have been neglected. With all the rains we've had, the weeds are out of control. Plus it has been so darn hot, I don't spend too much time outside right now.

We had some intermittent sprinkles yesterday morning and hubby decided to stay home and told me I could have the day outside if I wanted. Started by using an old commercial deep fryer basket to soft the big chunks out of the wood chips and ended up with a garbage can full that should be thoroughly broken down by spring. Neighbor sent up three buckets of fresh chicken crap and layered that with more sifted wood chips in a garbage can. The can I put them in is likely performing its last service as both handles are broken and there's many holes and cracks in the bottom and sides. I figure I'll probably dump it out in the spring, mix it up, and let it sit until next fall. Went to the shed and grabbed all of the cardboard I had and proceeded to cover approximately another 100 ft² of ground in the new garden and covered with mulch. Ended up adding a new post and repositioning the construction fencing and now I can finally walk under my bean arch without hitting a dead end. Hubby has two rolls of aluminum fascia that the hardware store he worked for removed from inventory and told him he could have for scrap. Of course we saved it thinking we could use it when we refurbished the chicken house which is now the garden shed. I'd thought about making raised beds out of it but read about how aluminum isn't good for that. I finally found a use (I hope) for it last evening as a baby rabbit deterrent around my beans. By evening I was tired and filthy but boy did I sleep well.
Rain forecasted again today and hopefully I'll be spending time collecting water and filling the barrels up. Of course I'll have to work a couple loads of laundry into the day too.

It rained .22" here, before midnight, and .34" overnight, before I got up, but it may have well been raining, as there was dew on everything! When I checked it out, the dewpoint was 74°, and 75° (about 9 am), and it's off the cars, but everything else is still wet, close to noon. Supposed to rain a lot more, later in the day, but unsettled throughout the day.

Yesterday my son-in-law came over to split and haul some wood for his fireplace. I made the mistake of helping him load some big pieces into his truck, which promptly set my rotator cuff rehab back a week or so. You'd think I'd learn, but you'd be wrong. My chainsaw is in the shop so he lent me his, and I hacked up a few trees that had fallen over the paths in the woods. I'll push the remnants out of the way with the tractor in a day or two. I also did a little harvesting, and later went out for some weeding. The clouds are keeping the humidity high after rain the past couple of days, so I weeded for about 10 minutes and quit. I figure the ground will still be wet tomorrow and the weather is supposed to be drier.

Today was a recovery day after stripping the last sections of the kitchen wood floor. Went for a walk in the AM , before it got too hot, had my weekly FaceTime talk-fest with my sis, then went to town to pick up some supplies from Home Depot in preparation for oiling the floor, stopped at World Market and found a great small woven rug for the kitchen- on sale 25% off for $16. Then dinner at friends' house, whom we hadn't seen in a while. Good catching up with them.

Why do we do such things? There's a growing suspicion that I may not be as smart as my mother thought. Took a power nap. Gotta do the important things early in the day or they won't get done. Tiny bit of mowing. Replaced a couple of linchpins on the tractor, then used the tractor to break up and move the sawn trees. Also used the tractor to straighten one of the block stacks supporting the shed. Coiled up the probably illegal electrical wiring the previous owner had going into the shed. Harvested grape tomatos. They just won't quit, although some appear to be dying due to wilt or blight or fungus or whatever. Every "expert" I've ever shown the leaves, regardless of where I lived, has had a different opinion, which is to say no one knows. Master gardeners, county ag office, farm supply store, etc.

Yesterday was day 5 of the Paxlovid. The only bad thing about it for me was the metallic taste, side effect. Nothing tasted good so hadn't been eating much. Today the taste is going away. Still tired and no energy. Been putzing around the house though. A little of this and that, then rest. 2 naps today. I am hoping tomorrow will be better and I can get outside to the garden with cooler temps. So, how's it goin'? No posts from you in a few days.

Spent a couple of hours in the veggie garden. Pulled out the spring lettuce plants and started to thin out the volunteers. They're really still too small to thin as much as I want so will complete that task once they are a bit bigger. Trimmed back some of the pumpkin plants that were starting to invade the chiles, across the path. Also trimmed back some of the KW beans that I planted too close to a row of chiles. Harvested a huge bunch of basil (from 4 plants) and a harvest basket of NM chiles (Big Jims). The chile harvest is looking to be good this year. I'm still scratching my head that the chiles are doing well yet the tomatoes are so far behind (and perhaps won't get a tomato harvest, or at best maybe just a handful). Dead headed some flowers. Then cleaned the basil and made bunches to hang to dry and enough to make 2-3 batches of pesto to freeze. Will have to do that tomorrow since I am out of piñons.

Hubby had an appointment yesterday so a 90-mile round trip. Stopped at thrift store on the way back and found two pair of new women's wool socks, two dress shirts for hubby and three nice shirts for kiddo all for .25 each. Bought a sandwich bag of chandelier crystals for .50 that will hopefully be turned into some sun catchers over the winter. Stopped for a few groceries and scored some cardboard boxes. Back home we had lunch and hubby worked in his shop while I put the thrifted clothes in the washer and went to work on removing tape from the boxes.
He has another appointment today in the town where our absolute favorite thrift store is so I'll probably walk there while he's waiting. Loaded a garbage bag of mostly kiddo's outgrown clothes in the car to donate. I've been sorting this morning and hopefully I have another bag ready by the time we leave.

Had Cardiologist followup appointment yesterday morning. In and out. No problems. Was going to stop at the thrift store to drop off a couple bags of kids clothes from youngest granddaughter, but they were closed on Mondays. Luckily it's not out of my way so I went home and pulled a few more tomato plants out. Roasted a pan of San Marzano's and froze them. Almost done with tomatoes, I have a few plants left out there but nothing like my usual tomato crop. BLT's tonight.
Went back to the thrift store this morning to drop off bags. As I was talking to one of the volunteers, she was telling me what they desperately needed. This thrift store is affiliated with a woman's shelter, so they need business casual clothes for women getting back into the work force, purses, stuff like that. So I went back home and packed up a box of my working clothes and some shoes that are just taking up space. So glad there are places that women can go to for a helping hand.
Worked out in the garden a little bit, but not a lot to do right now except big green beans and weeds.
