martywny, perhaps your shop needs a “shop cat” or a “shop snake”. Personally, I’d vote for the kitty, since I have an aversion to snakes, but a kitty could do more damage than a snake during the hunt. Sometimes, just a mouse trap will do, since they don’t tend to move around and surprise you by being where you don’t expect them to be.

It was another scorcher so mostly stayed indoors again except to water a few things. We need to get the drip irrigation in the veggie garden running now that all the beds are full and everything is in for the summer. Will do that tomorrow either early AM or in the evening when it has cooled down a bit.

Kiddo had a blast playing at a friend's house and I remembered why I usually don't shop on Fridays because it was absolute madness. Stopped at Lowes to check out perlite and left with nothing. The clearance plants didn't appeal to me and the regular prices ones were too high. Nothing at Walmart caught my attention and not one single plant came home with me!
Did repot some ornamental peppers as it looks like I'll probably be keeping them and planted some hopi blue corn in deep cell packs to transplant. One of the clematis I bought on clearance put out a single maroon flower so at least its color isn't a mystery anymore.
Plans for this morning are to water everything inside and out, gather more geraniums and some composted chicken poop for mom and then get ready to go. We're to start cooking for our catering event at 11:00 and I want to make a pit stop at one or both of the small nurseries nearby. Foot has improved a great deal but back of heel is still too sensitive for a regular shoe, so Crocs it is again.

Started out with 2 mile walk yesterday. Then mowed and trimmed the entire yard. Cleaned up all the leaves that were blown off trees from the high winds on Thursday. The bush beans took a beating, hopefully they will recover. Some tomato leaves were lost as well. Onions fared well, somewhat protected. Garlic is leaning South. Picked the first 2 Oregon giant peas, one for Princess, one for me.
Heading to Dad's today, fishing with sis. Got the trolling motor battery charged and ready to go. Chance of rain but that will be gone by 0800.

I checked the garden this morning after 4-1/2" of rain and found things have changed quite a bit. The Lilian's Caseload peas have gained a foot in height and produced hundreds of pods in the two days since I last checked them, it is difficult to comprehend anything growing that fast. (except for weeds, that is) Hand watering doesn't come close to what a few inches of rain can accomplish. Lots of weeds sprouted and we can get most of those with the stirrup hoes or pull them by hand. Great day for weed pulling with low temps and a good breeze.
Today I have to get the orchard and vineyard sprayed with fungicide, I alternate between sulfur, copper, and citrus-based treatments. The trees are looking good and we check them almost daily for problems.
Gunner has an appointment at the spa this morning, he gets the full treatment every other month and his nails done once a month. He's been refining his squirrel-chasing technique and munching on our strawberries in his spare time.

martywny, there’s a lot of satisfaction in weed pulling. I wouldn’t want to do it for a living, but a patch here and there is good for the soul.

Headed to Dad's at 0730. Cloudy and raining but went anyway. It was gone by 0830. So sis and I wrestled the old blue boat into the water (the one with holes plugged with that black stuff and duck tape LOL). Got the motor all hooked up and took off. First cast got me a small bass that swallowed everything. Went to get my needle nose pliers, dang, left the tackle box in the car. So we went back and got it. Kept the fish, no way I was getting the hook out. We had quite a few hits, I ended up catching 8, sis caught 3. We kept 3, 2 were giant sun fish on steroids! Never seen them so big. Big enough to catch with bass lures and fought like a bass. We had numerous fish on our lines that jumped off, we only count those that actually make it into the boat. Suddenly the sky got darker, no rain on radar, told sis it must be wind clouds. Sure enough the wind picked up and switched to North, got really chilly and instantly humid. We called it a day and left the fish for Dad. The gnats were bad early, little wind. We use Carmex lip balm to repel them. Just a dab on cheeks, nose, ears, neck and any other exposed skin. Works pretty good.
Since I was already a mess when I got home, went to the garden and crawled on hands and knees into the asparagus patch and pulled weeds. Then proceeded to do what I could with the fence line on my side. Then planted the kohlrabi seedlings. After watering, put some DE in the grass clippings I put around them, then a dab on the plants. Spent some time pulling wheat grass sprouting from all the new straw. Need to put a fence between potatoes and peppers before the taters take over. Might get that done yet today. Picked lettuce for salad tonight. Thinned beets and have enough for steamed greens. Picked a handful of peas and a couple sprigs of rosemary for the salad.

Missed my window of opportunity in the morning so nothing garden related happened. At 4:30 p.m. it is 101 degrees. Better than earlier in the week.

Yeah it's cooling down here too. Only 91 today. Still not doing much outside except to hand water newly seeded things. We did, however, go to house in town this evening to clean up a broken branch in the plum tree. Not sure what kind of plum it is. The original died back years ago and the root stock took over. The tree is loaded with plums this year. I mean really really loaded. So much so that the limbs are weighed down- some hitting the ground. We picked a bunch of the tiny fruit tonight and asked the tenants to do the same every day. We will also pick them off on the days we are there this week. This can save the tree from more broken branches. When we had the orchard we made 'crutches' with mill end boards (putting a notch at the top so that a branch could be propped up). Also thinning out the tiny fruit helps what remains to grow bigger.

I remember the plum we had in Texas. It had a three-year cycle. One year no fruit, the next year a few fruits, final year a ton of fruit and then back to none. My dad used to handwash his socks and hang them on the tree to dry. We told our friends it was a sockfruit tree.

Yesterday was just a crummy day. Rainy and cool, lots of family drama, glad yesterday is gone. Today is sunny and supposed to be in the 70's. Hopefully all the rain will make weed pulling easier.

Yesterday was perfect Spring weather. Got the fence put up between potatoes and peppers. Noticed a few scapes that I missed, pulled them off. The garlic sure has some fat stalks this year, looks like the heads will be BIG! Watered the new kohlrabi seedlings, windy and things dried out quickly. After our walk this morning all pots will be watered. The wind beaten bush beans look ok, new growth. Peas stood up really well in the wind, need to pick today. Been making daily rounds in the garden to pull out wheat grass. Was thinking of going to the big city today, but putting it off til tomorrow. Will go on my way to Dad's. Taking them to a graveside service for step mom's cousin. I'm sure Dad is hoping a lunch will be served.....LOL. He's like a puppy, food driven!!

Saturday everything lined up so we could replace some siding that had blown off my oldest daughter’s house. Not having ladders long enough or scaffolding I had the bright idea that the nephew’s crane truck with a man basket was the answer. It worked out wonderfully……. Yesterday I spent the afternoon being part of a full bore onslaught hay baling crew. A tractor with the big round hay baler, two skid steers and two trucks with fifth wheel trailers made for a pretty efficient way of baling and moving about 150 round bales. It was fun afternoon……

Yesterday was mostly a day of rest after being on my feet all day Saturday. We received several compliments on the food and honestly I don't think we've served a nicer bunch of folks. I took the opportunity to eat my supper outside at the picnic table and was in awe of the flowers and dry-stacked stone wall at the house next door. Was hoping to catch one of the owners outside to tell them how nice it looked but no luck.
Heel is definitely improving as it didn't give me near as much trouble as I expected yesterday, though it was screaming by the time I got home Saturday. Still too sensitive for a regular shoe though.
So far today I've spent three hours laying cardboard down, adjusted the octagon bed frame countless times and have wood chips spread around the perimeter. Pulled the black plastic down a few more feet to cook more grass and weeds. Came inside for a drink and hubby and kiddo are still asleep, so back outside I go. Hopefully the paste tomatoes get planted today.

Yesterday was a much better day. I got some stuff done in the garden and around the house. In the afternoon we went out on the pontoon. It was quite an adventure. The wide was pretty stiff but hubby, a seasoned boater, handled it. Getting into the dock was the scariest. between the wind and the current, it took a few tries. Not feeling like cooking, I usually never do feel like cooking, hubby remembered he had a gift card to a local restaurant, so that's what we did. All in all, except for the wind, it was a nice day.
Now I'm waiting for my oldest granddaughters mom to come get her, then it's off to Sam's Club. Hubby needs to fix weed whacker, so I can finish trimming around garden fence. He went to pay taxes, probably won't be in a good more when he gets home. Sunny and 59 right now, expecting a high of only 70, then it warms up the rest of the week.
