Spent yesterday with my parents. Dad and hubby replaced the bad wheel bearing, which was quite a relief to me. I took Mom an assortment of geranium seedlings and some from cuttings of last year's plants as well as a Persian shield. I'd picked up five pots of dark purple wave petunias on clearance last week and dropped four off when I dropped kiddo off last Friday, so we sat on the porch and potted everything up. I took along half a bale of ProMix as I wasn't sure if she had any potting soil left and ended up leaving it behind as she wants a few more geraniums. After that we strained the bucket of comfrey tea and I ended up bringing a gallon home as the deer are keeping my comfrey mowed down. We've never taken our frozen food back home from when the electric was off a few months ago so it was pretty easy to shop for anniversary supper ingredients. Ended up having chicken and shrimp along with mashed potatoes, gravy and green beans.
Today has been sort of a lazy day. I was expecting a phone call and knew from experience that I needed to stay inside or else I'd get preoccupied and forget about it. After the call I went outside to inspect everything between showers and decided to finish emptying the bigger preformed pond. Hosed it out and turned it upside down for now. Still debating on whether to put it back into the original hole I dug for it twenty plus years ago or dig a new one. I'm sure I'll have to dig it out a little more and clear out some weeds growing in it but eager to get it functional again. I know I'll need a hot sunny day to place the liner inside and then I'll need to be extra careful as there'll be very little excess liner and the next size up was $30 higher (and I'm cheap).
Foot has improved quite a bit except that wearing a regular shoe is out of the question. So looks like I either need to find my black Crocs or clean up the ones I wear in the garden for our event on Saturday.

The day started out cloudy and there was a little drizzle, so i figured I run a few errands and get that stuff out of the way. By noon, the sky cleared up and it turned int a beautiful warm summer day. Pulled some weeds, sprinkled some DE around the 3 cucumbers that haven't been eaten yet. The potted ones are doing great on the deck. Threw some chicken in the instapot to make enchilada's. When I let the dog out, I saw him sniffing something in the gravel driveway, so I went over there and it was a turtle. So of course I thought of breezygardner and picked it up and put it in the grass. I left to let the dog in and give him his cookie and when I went back outside to check on the turtle, it had already made it across the yard to the edge of the pond, approximately 130 feet. Fast little guy.
Such a nice night, I may just sit on the deck with a glass of wine all evening.

I got all the starts planted: 44 New Mexico chiles, 3 datil peppers, 8 tomatoes, 7 basils, and direct seeded kentucky wonder beans along the garden fence and sugar pie pumpkin at one end of the garlic bed (left empty just for the pumpkin so it can sprawl once the garlic is harvested) It was hot out there so took several break to hydrate and cool down. Still need to go back out and water things in. But I needed a few, to recupe from the heat.

Heading to Marshaltown this morning for breakfast with retired friends. Always good to have girl time! Then home to mow the yard, just didn't have the motivation to do it yesterday. It was a nice cool day with a strong breeze. I have some kohlrabi plants that need to be planted, and thinning of more marigolds. Spent time looking for Air B&B for our trip to Colorado, found several. Waiting on DS's opinion. He booked the flight so plans are progressing. DS has me psyched out about altitude sickness. But it's never bothered me any other time I've been there. He says my age could be a factor......grrr.......another benefit of aging........but not planning to do any hard core hiking......

After sending sweetheart off to work early yesterday morning I decided to get the twenty pounds of bulk bacon packaged up. I didn’t realize that it was thick cut so I made the executive decision to shoot for 1 1/2 pound packages. Vacuum packed, in the freezer and cleaned up by 8:30 I thought I was on a roll. Loaded the golf cart on the trailer to take it to the shop to see why the battery’s weren’t taking a charge with the FIL as my copilot. Stopped at Cracker Barrel for lunch on the way and discussed the pro’s and cons of buying the pto attachment for our tractor to make my life easier. Got to the golf cart dealership and in about 3 minutes they checked out the charger, which was working fine, and found one little black wire that I had neglected to hook up. 🤬 Gave the guy $20 for his time and returned home feeling pretty stupid. Charged up the batteries and took a nice drive around town when sweetheart got home from work.

DS has me psyched out about altitude sickness. But it's never bothered me any other time I've been there. He says my age could be a factor...... You most likely will be just fine. And put the age thing out of your mind. Most of our visitors are of the older persuasion and none (as well as younger ones) have ever had an issue. Ever. Except for some minor fatigue the first day or two, for some. Here's what we give to first time visitors: (from the short term rental organization in SF) THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT HIGH ALTITUDE Santa Fe sits at 7000 feet. The sun is stronger at this altitude. There is about 25% less protection from the sun. You can burn much more easily so if you are planning to be outdoors be sure to lather up with sunscreen, wear a hat and sunglasses, use an umbrella or parasol and/or cover up with long sleeves and pants. Getting acclimated to less oxygen at high altitude can take one to several days . Go slow the first couple of days. Planning lighter activities at first, before going all out with high level activities, can help. You may experience light headaches and fatigue in the first days. This is normal. Hydrate! This is the best way to help your body adjust to high altitude. You should drink twice as much water as you would at home or at least 8 glasses of water a day. Avoid caffeine and alcohol- especially while acclimating. These are dehydrating beverages. If you drink alcoholic beverages be sure to chase it with plain water. Also know that alcoholic drinks pack more of a wallop! at high altitude and you will feel the effects of alcohol more quickly . Eating complex carbohydrates (whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables) allows you to use oxygen more efficiently and help maintain energy levels- both important in preventing altitude sickness. Decrease salt intake. Eat iron and B12 rich foods "Green" supplements (spirulina, dulce, kelp, etc) have been helpful to some, started several days before arriving. Ginger tea or ginger chews can help with altitude induced nausea. High altitude sickness symptoms include Headaches Dizziness Loss of appetite Nausea/vomiting Fatigue/loss of energy Insomnia Most altitude induced symptoms are mild and can be avoided or treated with the above tips. However, should the symptoms become severe an Urgent Care or ER visit may be appropriate.

Had a great time with friends at breakfast, ate too much, in a food coma on the way home. Took a nap when I got home. Wind too strong to mow, sustained at 30 mph + !! Leaves everywhere. Sunflowers are taking a beating as are the amaranth I transplanted. Took an internet dash cam driving trip to the top of Pikes Peak. Scary even sitting in my chair!! Had me on the edge of my seat. It was an hour long video.
Will try for mowing tomorrow, though winds are expected to continue. It might put a damper on fishing Saturday. Repair guy is supposed to come tomorrow for the fridge, they never showed up Tuesday. We'll see.

Really windy here too. Lots of random tree branches and leaves down around the yard.

We have had gusts to 49 mph per weather guy. With dust storms out in the open country where crops are not up and growing yet.

After 4-5 hours working in the veggie garden with a 90º high yesterday (I won't do that again!), and even having kept well hydrated and taken a few breaks, I had a difficult night sleeping. My legs kept cramping up intensely. That's typically a sign of dehydration for me. But I had no other signs, and I drank a lot of water and herbal ice tea all day so not sure what was causing the cramping. Over heated is my guess. So I took it easy today, stayed inside except to hand water the seeds I planted yesterday and the newly sprouted native grass that I recently reseeded in some bare spots. Stayed well hydrated and cool today and have had no more leg cramps.

A few days ago, I started planting dahlia tubers in my new metal raised bed. Grow bags are the 7 gallon size, so I’ve been mixing the soil from last year's failed pots, compost, peat, and vermiculite. I filled all grow bags to the desired planting level for the tubers. I did get three bags planted and filled to the top. Then. It was quitting time.
The next day, I planned to work on that project and found there’d been a raccoon attack…of my new grow bags…of my collected soil, of my tubers. I lucked out that he/she didn’t did deeply enough to find tubers in the first two bags. The third planted bag was his prize. He didn’t eat the tuber, he just damaged it. The crown and eye are missing, so it’s a dud.
After the wind had calmed some, I took my container of alum and dusted the top of each bag. If he/she gets a whiff, that should provide a bit of education.

More rain again yesterday but did take time to tuck some bean seed amongst the peas at the arched trellis. Potted up the boxwood cuttings and have 17 total. Watered plants inside the greenhouse but otherwise it was a bit of a lazy day watching British gardening shows.
Today will be grocery day and kiddo will be visiting with a friend for a few hours so I'll actually be shopping solo. Need to buy a bag of perlite to finish repotting the indoor geraniums and I'm sure a plant or two may slip into my cart.
Tomorrow is the event our organization is catering and it's going to be an extremely long day. Kiddo will stay with mother-in-law as mom will be helping too.
Two more events next week and a doctor's appointment for hubby but then things should settle down a bit. Posts gathered for extending the new garden fence and eager to pull back the black plastic and begin planting in the ground.

Taking time out for afternoon tea and enjoying the monsoon. 3-1/2" of rain has fallen since yesterday and it was a welcome addition to the garden. We transplanted pumpkin, cantaloupe, and watermelon out to the back garden and rain is always appreciated when transplanting.
I had to replant a flat of sunflowers, as a critter got into my shop, climbed the shelves, dug up seeds, and munched on seedlings. Yesterday morning, it was determined the subject critter was formerly a mouse. I discovered another former mouse this morning. As the saying goes, where there is one, there are many. I will leave the traps set for a while longer.
All is going well, especially strawberries, which I eat every morning for breakfast. I do see a lot of opportunities to fine-tune my weeding skills, so that is on the agenda from here on out. I have to pick up some wood chips to mulch all my fruit trees, chips are free at the town maintenance buildings, just need to get the trailer light repaired before I venture out with it.
I rebuilt the mower deck on my Simplicity tractor, that's the one I bought at auction last year. It did not need rebuilding, but when I have it off the tractor and apart to replace blades and drive belt, I may as well do it all. Grass is growing fast and it takes a good bit of time to mow and bag, but this year's clippings are next year's compost.
