Thankfully another PTO fundraiser for the books and we all vowed no more until at least mid-August. Attendance was low at the event we were at and profits were half what we expected but we did make a few hundred dollars. It was a fun day as we all work well together and of course we divided up the leftover goodies at the end.
I vowed that whether rain, shine or tornado, I was going to spend time with my plants today. Of course the rain is pouring and so glad I reattached the greenhouse plastic as I sat in there about an hour sorting and tidying up flowers. I'll probably mix up a soil mix for the "mother" geranium plants inside and repot them all, especially since I want to get three of self-watering pots back to mom for her planter boxes.
This week shouldn't be near as hectic though we do need to take time to put a wheel bearing in my vehicle. The event our organization is catering on Saturday has grown to 101 people and not so excited about that as it will be another looong day with very little help. We have another the following week but thankfully we only have 20 attendees so far. We downgraded out quilt guild celebration to just snacks versus a meal and so happy for that. I don't mind volunteering one bit but four events in less than two weeks is just too much.
Utility room is next on my radar as it keeps getting put off year after year. It currently serves as storage for clothes, craft supplies, unfinished paper mache projects (some which need pitched), merchandise for the school Christmas store and a general assortment of just about everything including a freezer that doesn't work and one that works so well that the door is frozen shut. My goal is to make it my plant starting area and the temporary master bedroom as it's the biggest room in the house with the exception of the living room. And of course I need to prepare for the big yard sale in early August and it also serves as my sorting and pricing area.

24 person-hours later, we completed the front yard re-do in town yesterday.. Well. Almost. There is one section of edging that doesn't, to my artistic eye, have the right curve. So tomorrow we will go and rework that one 10 ft piece of edging. Should only be another hour with the two of us. Otherwise the rest is good, , the cedar bark is down and it looks fantastic. Took ourselves out for a late lunch afterwards.

Went to a baby "sprinkle" for my nephew and his wife today. This is my sister's son. Kinda weird her not being there. Anyway, it was held at his brother's home in Chicago. It was a long drive in city traffic, so glad to be home. Went out and checked on garden. 2 more cucumbers gone along with a sunflower, and a few bean seedlings. Luckily tomatoes and peppers are safely caged. I'm going to cover the beans with some netting till they get a little bigger. I got a hunch it's rabbits getting those.

Yesterday morning started out with a very light rain that was a welcome reprieve from the last couple of days of working in the garden. Stepson and grandson stopped in to install a new water heater for us and of course sweetheart had to go all out making breakfast for them. Bacon, eggs along with biscuits and gravy was a great way to start the day. Before we left at midafternoon, to go to a dance recital, I checked the rain gauge and it showed about three tenths of an inch of rain. When we returned turned home a few hours later it had filled up to an inch and three quarters.
Today we started out by going to Bloomington so sweetheart could visit a friend in the nursing home and to pick up a few things. We unloaded groceries for us and dog food for Ruby when we got home and started cooking immediately. Sweetheart making a meal for a recently widowed friend and me working on supper for us. Grilled chicken breast’s, brats along with asparagus and potato salad went over pretty well as her dad and brother joined us.

I managed to get all but five of the indoor geraniums repotted and added an organic fertilizer into the mix, so eager to see how they react. One of the plants I overwintered from mom's had what I first thought was new growth at the base of the stem but in fact it was a wax begonia seedling. Ended up being enough to fill three small pots and eager to get them to size and pass them back to mom. She also had a geranium seedling pop up in one of her planters which I thought was unusual since they remain at least 4' off the ground the entire year.
I managed to overextended my foot in a weird way not once but twice on Friday. It ached a bit on Saturday but honestly both feet did from being on them so much in the previous days. Yesterday it actually hurt enough that walking was painful but thankfully no swelling. Pain is in the back of the foot just above the heel and being cautious not to irritate it more than necessary.
I'll make a call to the parts store as soon as they open to inquire about a wheel bearing and if they have one in stock we'll go get it today. Otherwise it will have to be ordered and probably not in until tomorrow or Wednesday. Mom dug some voodoo lilies for me and need to either pot them temporarily or find a place for them.

Messing around this morning with DH computer, it's 10 years old. Finally got the update done, took forever. Now I want to wipe it and start over, really slow start up but can't figure out why. No extensions and only Apple supplied apps that are there no matter what. I should just trade it in for a laptop, but they are only offering $60 for this dinosaur!!
Rain off and on today. Need to go to Dad's around 3:00 to pull rhubarb. Dad doesn't go out there and do it anymore and the grocery stores want it. So barring rain, I'll go help and have it ready for brother to deliver when he gets off work. Brother is becoming overwhelmed since he's having to do everything now, so I help when I can. Next week I'll be taking step mom to memorial service for her cousin, her last relative. She was more like a sister.
Stuck in the house this morning, so will get busy on dog laundry.

Yesterday, and a few days before, when watering the tomato plants, played Whac-a-Mole with the mouse that has moved into the raised bed.
Mouse…long tail.

This morning Mr. Breezy & I made a run to Walmart & ultimately to the local food pantry with a shopping cart's worth of their weekly "needs of the week" (flour, sugar, vegetable oil, cornmeal, rice mixes, Spam, & various condiments (mustard, ketchup, etc.). Rounded that out with several smoked beef & turkey kielbasa ropes & canned Bush's baked beans.
(I did refrain from telling the food pantry folks that they were receiving this week's bounty due to my making an error the other day & buying beef kielbasa instead of the non-red-meat-eating Mr. Breezy's turkey variety. What the heck was I going to do with a beef kielbasa? So I filled it out with more food pantry stuff & donated it - couldn't drive over there with just one lousy kielbasa - lol!!)

We went to the house in town and tweaked the curve on the edging to my satisfaction . The front yard change is now completed. Then we weed whacked and cut to the ground the 2 Russian Sages on the side of the house (as well as their runners). Planting Russian sages (and I had planted a bunch of them -at both houses- over the years) was one of the bigger planting mistakes I have made. They are now on the Master Gardeners 'Do Not Grow' list due to their invasive aspect. Shearing them to the ground, consistently, eventually kills them off though it usually take 2-3 years. It's a lot easier than digging them out though. Here's the front yard all spiffed up. The area where the redder (cedar) bark is , is where we dug out all the thyme lawn with invaded weeds and encroaching flowers. It wraps around to the right , behind the tree. The front yard is all drought tolerant plantings and only requires once a week watering spring, fall and a lot of the summer. Twice a week watering on the 2-4 weeks of the hottest summer days. No additional water in the winter. Desert yards can be green if you plant the right things!

Went to Dad's yesterday afternoon, it was humid! Darn gnats were awful despite the wind. Got the rhubarb done, brother got home around 4, he and Dad went to deliver it after we washed and bagged it all. I went to the other side of the quarry to throw in a line. The water is now TOO high! It has covered the dock by the house and the pier on the opposite side. My "landmarks" are under water, going out in the boat this weekend will be different. No luck from shore, the weeds along the bank that are now under water are a slimy mess. Cottonwood cotton all over the water, but it sinks once it gets water logged. Didn't even see a fish. No rain forecast after today so the water should settle some by the weekend. Came home and moved some marigolds and zinnias. Gave them a good watering. Went to neighbor's for a barley pop and called it a day.

I've realized that I need to baby my foot for a few weeks but dang! there's so much to do. Yesterday I pulled two buckets of weeds from the new garden and most of them were from the paths, and another two buckets this morning. Was able to do that sitting on either the plastic little tikes chair or the cap stones on the end of one bed. Oh and I did get the push mower started mainly to show hubby I could fix it and mowed for about fifteen minutes (and I paid for it last night).
A call to the parts store yesterday revealed that they indeed had a hub assembly in stock so I went solo to pick it up and might have stopped by a local nursery while I was there. I had some extra bean seed for her and she had a plant I wanted so no cash exchanged hands plus I came home with a few cuttings too. Gas was twenty cents cheaper there so filled up before stopping at Walmart in hopes of finding a bag of perlite with no luck. I did however find three different brands/flavors of tea on clearance for $1-$1.50 a box and grabbed six to add to my tea hoard.
Today we'll go to my parent's house to work on the car and since their anniversary is on Wednesday, I'll prepare a meal. It will probably be an all-day affair and that suits me just fine.

Yesterday was a day of many different chores that needed to be done. First thing was to make an appointment for an oil change for sweetheart’s car that works with her schedule. With the calendar as a guide I got that accomplished. Not hearing from an adjuster, in regards to our damaged fence, had bothered me all weekend so I went to a local office of the same insurance for help. The secretary went above and beyond to get things moving and within a couple of hours the adjuster had been in touch with me and had all the information he needed. Our local grocery store has a pretty good bulk meat sale going on so I picked up twenty pounds of breakfast sausage and proceeded to weigh it in one pound increments and vacuum seal before freezing. I got fifteen pounds of bacon to pick up this afternoon to do the same to. By the middle of the afternoon the grass was dry enough to mow so I got that done also. When we got the new mower I vowed to use the old mower around the garden area, as it’s kind of rough going, but I’m loving putting the grass clippings in the garden so I got two more bags to use with the new mower. The chickens seem quite pleased when I empty part of a bag in their pen to scratch thru. It was a pretty darn good day…….

Did a bunch of little stuff that I've been meaning to do but never seem to get done. Transplanted the Zinnias that were really outgrowing their little seed starting pots. Started some pumpkins a few weeks ago, so those went in the ground too. Had to go grocery shopping and was surprised that some of the prices have come down. Not a lot, but some.
Today I watered all the transplants and so far they look good. Planted more cucumber seeds again. Filled in a gap in a stone border around the back garden that the chipmunks have dug out. Filled it with rocks and dirt. I'm sure it's only temporary, but it made me feel better. Sat on the deck for a while and got sucked down the rabbit hole scrolling the internet. Watched some YouTube videos on garden pest control. Going to take a shower and meet a girlfriend at a local restaurant on the Fox River for TacoTuesday.
