Day 4 post surgery finds sweetheart confident enough in my recovery that she has went to work and willingly left me unattended. It’s time to get back to a somewhat normal daily routine. Mom had to come by yesterday bringing soup, muffins and cookies, she is truly amazing!
As for Christmas buying, with this being just our fourth holiday together, I enjoy looking for something special that will make her eyes sparkle.

Yesterday was another perfect day. Finally got inside of car cleaned! No more massive tree dump runs! Mulched leaves in the back yard, the real reason is so I can see doggie poo. Then saw that I hadn't dug those 4 stray carrots, they look pretty fat!

Realized it takes approximately one day to clean off and put a bed to sleep. Started by pulling and weeds and plant debris, loosened soil with a fork since it's one of the shallower ones, planted 18 winter fingerling potatoes, added the last of the oldest aged chicken poop, leaf mold, a generous layer of unsifted compost and a generous layer of leaves. I figure if the potatoes don't make it I'm only out the time it took to plant them. Of course I was harvesting leaves from our meadow paths for hubby to shred for mulch too and somewhat shocked to discover that it takes four garbage cans of leaves to equal enough shredded leaves per bed. Needless to say I'm packing the cans more every time.
Last weekend a guy showed up to give us an idea of what it would cost to fix a few things on our roof that wasn't done right by the roofer. I knew hubby wouldn't be pleased as he'd asked him to call first and also said not to come on a weekend and he wanted to be there when they arrived (he's very protective of us). So yesterday a guy shows up and says his boss is on the way and they will need $125 for a temporary fix until spring. I told him that no work would be done until we had an estimate and a contract and he called his boss who said he was on his way. I talked to the helper for a few minutes and his boss called back and told the him to meet him at his house and they would be back on a few hours. Needless to say we never saw them again and have decided to pass on them even if they do come back with an estimate. Is there no such thing as business ethics and etiquette anymore?

Hubby and I met my siblings and their spouses for lunch in a nearby town today. We were on our way home…less than a mile from home…when Neighbor Dave calls and wants to know if we are home and where are you?
Not far from our driveway, two bucks had locked antlers and Dave was looking for help. The bigger of the two bucks was dead in the ditch, but the smaller one couldn’t get free. Dave wanted a saw to remove an antler to free the smaller buck. A third guy was called…a bit younger and more nimble…and he was to man the saw. Younger guy is down in the ditch running the saw, Dave is recording this, and hubby is staying out of the way. When the buck broke free of the dead one, his remaining antler struck the saw. Apparently the smaller buck wasn’t as worn down as much as he appeared to be. The guy running the saw is lucky. It could have played out differently.
Using hubby’s tractor, the dead deer was loaded in to the back of a pickup, to be delivered away from homes. A carcass in the ditch would attract more coyotes. The eagles will appreciate an easy meal.
So, the buck with half a rack is probably safe for this season

This was the get-as-much-finished-as-we-can day. We are leaving for our annual road trip to Central Coast California on Saturday. So we blew more leaves, watered the entire yard (5 zones) since it has been so dry, finished feeding that last veggie bed and watered them all. Washed the windows (outsides only)-I really didn't want to be looking out the dirty windows all winter and figured we better take advantage of the warmer weather before we go. Who knows what the weather will do by the time we get back (end of November). Then we washed and vacuumed both cars. Since we were sprucing up the car for the road trip, decided to clean the other one too. This will probably be the last wash until Spring.
Finished with making a half batch of pizzelles (Italian cookie). I had made pizzelle Christmas ornaments for myself and sis years ago (as one of the ways to keep mom in our Christmas celebrations after she died) and hers broke last year, so made the half recipe, turned a few into ornaments (poke a hole towards an outer edge, while the pizzelle is still warm, will later insert thin red and green ribbons), and then shellac them. The rest will be brought to her house to eat with coffee. I have to go to town and get ribbon tomorrow, to finish them off.
I'm going to start packing tonight. Since we drive, I always pack way more than I need simply because the room is there to do so in a car.

The guy running the saw is lucky. It could have played out differently. These stories remind me of when Steve Irwin was killed in a freak accident, you can not be too careful.

Today sweetheart and I came to an agreement that I could get back to doing a few light duties and driving again. So I ran a couple of errands and stopped for a haircut, it felt good to be out of the house. With sweetheart working the weekend I’m glad that we worked that so I can do a few things, within reason, and not cause trouble between us. Life is sometimes like a roller coaster…….

Finding the balance between over doing and over hovering... so slow and steady! centralilrookie , It feels so good when we can start feeling normal again, doesn't it.

Another day of getting ready to go on our road trip. More leaf blowing and shredding. Trip to town for some last minute items. Cleaned the bathrooms and vacuumed the most traffic area ( I like coming home to a clean and orderly house), 4 loads of laundry, made breakfast and lunch for the road, set timers for lights to come on and off while gone, started packing the car tonight. Cooler will get packed in the AM. Plan is to be on the road by 6AM. I'll let you know how close we got to that

Prepared three beds for winter this week, experimented with some winter potatoes and gathered many, many leaves. Forgot about the elephant garlic but hoping to get it tucked into a bed soon. Yesterday was kiddo's last day of school until the week after Thanksgiving and I spent it at school organizing and sorting orders for a fundraiser we've been working on as I wanted to get to town before the banks closed to make the deposit. To make a long story short the order would not go through and customer service is out until Monday. Gave up at 6:00 last evening and came home. Must call the bank in the morning and inquire if there's a transaction limit on our PTO card as that's the only fathomable reason I can think of.
Kiddo has struggled with a cold all week and is finally starting to feel herself again. I started making her hot chocolate every morning and she loves it, so I'll continue to do so while it's chilly out. I really need to grocery shop today and may ask Mom to go along as I'll probably pick up more stuff for our Christmas store which is only a few weeks away. Kiddo is really good in stores and loves riding in the cart, but that cart really needs to be constantly moving which can be challenging. Even if Mom can't go with us, I'll still accept the challenge as we definitely need a girls day out.

Congratulations to Marty, I've been promoted! I am now in Plant Hardiness Zone 6b and didn't even have to move. My thanks to the USDA.
