We are now 5b, but I doubt I’ll buy any trees/perennials based on that info. I’m not very trusting, and Mother Nature can be fickle.

When I first moved here, 42 years ago, we were 5. Most recently we were up to 6b and with this update we are now 7a . As much as I love some aspects of the warmer climate this is Climate Change and it's scary to me.

From 7a to 7b, which is what I thought I was anyway. We are slightly warmer than the rest of the zip code as we are right by the bay, which moderates our temperature. I wonder if I need to start thinking in terms of being 8a, now. Actually, like Popeye, I yam what I yam, so I'll just follow my own records in terms of what feels right in my garden.

We are tucked in at a Best Western for the night, after an 11 hour day on the road. Good talks, good music, good homemade meals and snacks and we had rain for a long stretch- from around Grants NM to west of Holbrook AZ- some of it quite heavy. We actually loved it- seeing as we haven't had a hard rain at home, like that, for years. Did this on 4 hours of sleep last night- we both still have it: road warriors!

We are now 5b, but I doubt I’ll buy any trees/perennials based on that info. I’m not very trusting, and Mother Nature can be fickle. Me neither. I bought a "hardy" fig on clearance and after reading the label when I got home I think I should have left it at the nursery. It may make it, it may not. Last year I think our lowest was -8°, but we had about five days of temperatures dropping below zero in the night with no snow cover and I actually lost some alpine strawberries that had survived in an exposed location for two winters prior. Just for fun I entered the zip code of our post office in the neighboring and the zip of the small town five miles away to see if there was a difference as temperatures can vary by 5° and nope we're the same. In the winter it is sometimes like entering a new dimension when you cross the county line into ours as we can average 8-10" more snow than my-in-laws which live 7 miles away.

What a difference a week makes…… Last Sunday at this time I was in a hospital bed waiting for my time slot to have my appendix removed, today I’m back to doing normal even if they are on a limited basis. Yesterday sweetheart entrusted me to give the little white pasture princess her medication as she has a severe case of laminitis. The vet was here Friday to check her out and left a medication that she has to have orally twice a day, ordered another med and put her on a diet. No treats of any kind. Ran a couple of errands yesterday and did a few light duty chores around here before taking a nice afternoon nap. Sweetheart works a long shift today, 16 1/2 hours, so it will be a long day without her. Life is good…….

It was the second and last day of our road trip. Spent last night in Barstow, CA,. First leg of today's journey was a 1 hr 45 minute drive to Burbank, CA and what was my mom's favorite breakfast cafe. It's our annual memorial breakfast for her. This year, our niece, (who we usually stop to see in North Las Vegas) was actually in Los Angeles this weekend so she and her partner met us at the restaurant. Her sister just recently moved to LA so she joined us, as well. Then a 15 minute drive to the cemetery to tend my parents and sister's graves, and said hello to other family members in the family plot. The final leg, today, was the last 3 hours up the coast on Hwy 101, with ocean views. We are now settled in at my sister's in Avila Beach for the next 7-8 days.

I'm feeling better, but this cough has got to go. I put the Christmas tree up, but won't decorate it yet. I like to have it up for Thanksgiving at least. I have this weird Thanksgiving/semi Christmas vibe going in my house. I do Thanksgiving dinner here, so I feel like I need to keep those few decorations up. Hubby is going to work on the last of the leaves blowing around out there, me, I'll be cleaning the house. !!!

Other than doing some kitchen decluttering, we went out early this morning to do a bit of grocery shopping as well as pick up several frozen Stouffer's "party-size" trays of Italian-style lasagna, Vegetable Lasagna, & Cheese Enchiladas & take them to the local food pantry for turkey day distribution. I always like to donate some of those since not everyone likes turkey or wants to deal with it.

This morning's 19° temp brought down another bunch of leaves from the Catalpa trees, they are always the last to drop and I have been patiently waiting for the end. I did the usual mulch first then bag on all the lawns and put everything into the compost bins.
Daughter dropped off the extra turkey for us to cook and bring over for Thanksgiving dinner. We are having a large gathering this year so the second turkey is necessary and they only have the one oven. My contribution is always the sweet potatoes but we do have a second oven here and cooking the additional items is never a problem.
Took down the last three trees that were on my schedule, all are cut and waiting at the bonfire site. Time for some chainsaw maintenance and cleanup of the outdoor tools.
I put the snowblower on my new tractor this morning, this is the second time for that particular task. The first time I installed it, I forgot to move the keepers into place because they are hidden behind the frame and I thought a different keeper was supposed to go there. Live and Learn! It is now ready for the Thanksgiving storm, but the storm went from a bunch of Lake Effect snow to less snow to no snow to just rainy and warm.
Got tickets to a local MMA fight, my nephew will be fighting. He's been doing this for quite a while and is pretty good at it, hope to see a good event, the whole family usually shows up. He's not a pro fighter, says he just does it to relieve stress. He is a full-time counselor for "at-risk" youth at a local facility, is also a PhD candidate, and is in medical school. He's quite the contradiction in terms.
I am going to try and slow down a bit for the next week or so, enjoy Thanksgiving and visit. The outside is pretty much caught up until the Christmas lights go up.

martywny , sounds like you’ve been extra busy but I’m ready to see this new tractor….. We had a three loads of dirt delivered last Wednesday (first surgery day) and I have been waiting for sweetheart’s blessing to get back to getting on our tractor. Begrudgingly she gave it to me this morning but first I had some errands to take care of. It started sprinkling as I returned home.☹️ It’s still raining 6 hours later so it will take a few days to dry out but at least she and I are on the same page. Dr’s appointment Wednesday will hopefully ease her mind on my recovery and limitations if any. So much to be thankful for…..

After a leisurely morning we took a 3.5 mile round trip walk to the beach and back.I love seeing the Pacific Ocean- an old friend. Along the way I picked wild fennel that has gone to seed.. Then back home to my sister's to make dinner and continue our gab fest.

"RIFed" last week...reduction in force, which is a PC way of saying laid off. Debating about taking retirement, wondering if I truly need to work full time, do my own thing, or just take a couple weeks to think things through. Bit of a shock.
