Don't know how I made through today! After the pears I went out and vacuum/shredded 2 huge piles of leaves. The garden is now officially covered. Ran the mower over the front, dumped those leaves on the Hibiscus, which are caged. The grass has grown since I mowed just a few days ago. And the flies are back today! Crawling around yanking out the tops of hostas are what got to me. My left leg is not happy. Then went to the tree dump, there was a honeybee on the pear skins that I had set outside, so I picked up the peel and set it aside for him. Then to the junk shop for another 6 pint jars. I'm not buying another jar! Whatever I think I need to can will have to wait til we have eaten some of what's already canned!!! Unless of course it's something I use quart jars for......
I discovered a pretty good soup combo, a pint of spicy chili beans, a pint of chick peas, 1/2 pint lentils and 1/2 pint marinara sauce, along with a healthy dollop of garlic scape pesto. And a little tomato juice if it seems too thick.
Today I noticed 3-4 carrots still in the ground, I'll dig those tomorrow. And tackle the back yard again. The sage and parsley continue to hang on, and one celery plant that grew from one that I cut in early July.

I intended to finish a few reports and head outside yesterday but between the laptop and the program I was using, it turned into a six hour ordeal and typing and entering stuff into the spreadsheet twice because it kept disappearing every time the battery died. I'd love a new laptop but I'll probably just buy two new batteries as I've been swapping the battery between two of them just to operate long enough to connect to the printer. Made a side trip to drop off a report for another organization and then to school for PTO meeting and to hang out with kiddo until she got on the bus.
Hubby shredded leaves and I'm having him put them in garbage cans until I can get to them. I did go out and spread some on the one bed in the old garden I had ready and on the garlic bed in the new garden. I have another bed in the old garden cleared but I want to add a layer of compost to it before I cover it with leaves, so looks as if cleaning out the compost bin will be the first priority once it warms up. Then I absolutely need to pick up the chestnut burrs in the old garden as I foresee an entire can full after they're shredded and I always use them as the bottom layers of my compost pile.

First and foremost THANK YOU to all for your concern and support this past week!! I’m happy to say that this morning I can get out of my chair by myself and that’s a great improvement over yesterday. Life is good…..

Yesterday morning I dove into pears again. The final batch of 9 pints, grand total of 40.
Today it's cleaning inside of car and backyard mowing.

Sifted compost for another bed I had ready and shoveled the remaining compost into two large trash cans until Im ready for it. Dumped two trash cans full of shredded chestnut burrs into the compost bin and will mow the front yard so I'll have some green to add. Put a generous layer of compost and leaves on that bed as it's one of my worst and will hopefully tackle the other bed that needs help today. Remarkably hubby has only tackled about a third of the burrs in the yard and none in the garden yet. I had planned to peruse my new seed catalogs last evening but fell asleep. I'll do that this morning while waiting for it to warm up outside. In reality all I need is onion seed but I'm sure something else will catch my fancy.
Kiddo's bus driver just notified me and said he will not be on the bus this morning, so waiting to find out if there will be a sub or if I'll need to take her to school.

So what's going on around here...
Went to my dermatologist, and he removed two pre-cancerous 'thingys' from my forearm, one of the hazards of gardening. All else was well.
Removed two more trees from the neighbor's side and three more from the golf course side of the property. Three more left to take down on my own, I will more than likely call in a pro for the three or four that are too close to houses and buildings. The trees in the back have been keeping me from installing fencing for our new orchard/grape/blueberry/blackberry area. Now it is all clear for fence building.
Went shopping this morning for milk, came back with eight bags of groceries. I'm sure there's a reason for that, just haven't figured it out yet.
Finished up a last bit of Christmas shopping for the kids and grandkids with online purchases. Cheryl and I stopped giving each other gifts for birthdays, Christmas, etc. and it makes life much easier not being a slave to the occasion. We buy each other stuff throughout the year when we want or need it.

Cheryl and I stopped giving each other gifts for birthdays, Christmas, etc. and it makes life much easier not being a slave to the occasion. I'm glad this works for you, as well as others, but I honestly LOVE (as does Mr. Breezy) celebrating holidays with gifts to each other. I get giddy finding something I know that he will love & gifting him with it for Xmas, or his birthday, or Valentine's Day (when I always buy him something red). It's just so much fun for me. And he openly admits he loves it too. Like I said - I'm glad no-gifting works for you, but I just wanted to shout-out to those who still gift, that there's absolutely nothing wrong with that if/when you love it!!

We also stopped gift giving on holidays and birthdays years ago. We much prefer gifting spontaneously rather than a holiday dictating the giving. It's such a wonderful loving surprise when Quinn comes home with something I mentioned , in passing, I would like to get 'one of these days' (we are both masters of 'delayed gratification'.) We both are thrilled when the other surprises like that.

martywny , Luck you- only 2 pre 'thingys'. I see my dermatologist every 6 months. Been seeing this one for just the past 5 years and he has really stabilized me. He uses a special device (stronger than a magnifier) that catches the pre cancers really small, which has reduced the number of true skin cancer growths (and the requisite biopsies) I've had down to zero. I've had 8 basal cell skin cancers removed, including 3 with MOHS. There are always at least 3 or 4 (down from 10-12) pre cancerous spots to be removed. From gardening, but also frying my skin on the So Cal beaches when I was a teen. (baby oil with iodine, lathered on to help bring on a deep tan...oh my!) I've had to make strong pro active choices, along with his great care, to reduce the pre spots (when I am out gardening it's long sleeves, long pants, hat and sun glasses.; and sunscreen on any exposed parts) I feel so 'suited up' but it's way better than getting the cancer growths. ( the one on my eyelid was not fun. At All. )

We are in the no gifts club here too. Hubby sometimes surprises me with something silly for the garden. A new solar light or some kind of garden art. It works for us. Been battling a head cold, so not a lot getting done. We did put up the outside Christmas lights because it was 65* out.

We generally stick to the $20 range for gifts but since we bought a vehicle right before my birthday, we decided to forgo birthday gifts and will probably go back to the $20 range for Christmas again. Last year we had a little extra and I picked out a gift that was about $100 from Hobby Lobby and took hubby along to carry it. Also picked up fabric, notions and a big roll of quilt batting for a total of $186. So although my gift was $100, hubby decided he had $186 to spend and made me a list. Never, ever will I take him along when I'm picking out my gift.

We no longer do the gift thing either. We buy and provide along the way with whatever is needed for us or the kids. We'd just rather have good food and a couple good Scrabble games!
