Thrift store trip yesterday yielded a few things for kiddo, a pair of jeans to add to store inventory and a shirt with a beautiful beaded flower that will soon be the centerpiece of a crazy quilt block. Had shopping to do for a veterans breakfast at school and enlisted hubby to help carry it all in. Managed to sneak around the cafeteria and kiddo didn't see us but hubby got to see her and her friends. Back home I worked on finishing four blocks for our guild's next charity quilt as several had said they were difficult. Finished them relatively quick with no problems and will take them to our meeting this evening.
Got a bit of bad news as our principal is leaving us to take another position, so we'll soon have our fifth principal in less than two years. My emotions are mixed as she's easy to work with and we really like her, but the kids need stability and we have a bullying problem that isn't being dealt with to anyone's satisfaction. Also our county's board of education has been under state control due to large amounts of money being mishandled by a past superintendent. New leadership isn't popular and basically isn't doing it's job as teachers and staff are leaving left and right. There's a shortage of bus drivers and luckily I've only had to take kiddo once but some of the buses haven't run five or more days. As of Monday, both the transportation director and the assistant director will be gone as they've found other jobs. Bus drivers have revolted and 14 runs have been cancelled for today. We're a small county so that's approximately half of the buses. Kiddo's bus isn't one of them and I'll be going to the school soon after to help out this morning. I'm sure it will be an interesting day.

Made another (unplanned) trip to town. Got the email I've been waiting for-our favorite Italian balsamic vinegar and olive oil shop is having a great sale this weekend. So I had to run down and pick up a grilled lemon white balsamic (I could drink it straight from the bottle!) and a well aged, very thick dark balsamic.
Also made about 6 weeks worth of cat food . I freeze it in pint containers. High quality food at a very reasonable price.
No garden work today. Too cold and damp.

I finished a project I have been working on for 3 days fixing my recliner, in which a wooden piece cracked, and I had to disassemble it quite a bit, make a duplicate wooden piece, then put it back together. Fortunately, I had a small piece of white oak, which I could draw that rocker shape on, in sort of a mirror image, and cut them on the bandsaw, and glued them together with some Gorilla Glue, and didn't even have to plane them to thickness, or sand the edges! Really strange thing happened when I was taking that cracked piece out - I found a broken off brad-point drill bit, that must have been left during assembly, because it was from the other side! You can see all these holes (I tried to fix it before, but I pushed it to the back burner, until gardening was almost done), and the piece of the drill bit I found! I filled the particle board holes with auto-body filler, the first day, then yesterday, once it got dark out (the day was too nice to work inside much of the day), I got the piece attached, with 2 oak dowels, and 4 #10 screws, plus Gorilla Glue. Today was a rainy, dismal day out there, so a good time to finish this! I did go out, briefly, to harvest some greens, to make dinner. Here's that broken piece I had replace, showing the drill bit piece I found: The piece of wood that I had to replace, with the piece of the drill bit I found in it! by pepperhead212, on Flickr This was the first day I cooked for a while (besides the bread, to make all those sandwiches) - I made a dal, with those greens, from some bok choy outer stalks, and all 4 of the cauliflower that I tried to grow again! There wasn't even a hint of a head on any, and they were planted back in August! Like I've said before, cauliflower just don't like my garden!

After helping with the veterans breakfast at school on Thursday I obtained keys to our PTO building which is approximately 8'x 8' with intentions of pulling all the glass items out of our Christmas store inventory and donating them to another Christmas store in the county where glass isn't an issue. It's always a matter of moving a stack of totes to find what you're looking for and I decided I couldn't deal with that any longer. Moved the shelf that was in there and put another one together. Organized and tried to arrange totes by what occasion they were needed for. Ended up tossing a few things and ended up with two empty totes to bring home and refill with Christmas store inventory. Came home to discover hubby was vomiting and had diarrhea so arranged to take kiddo to my parent's house while I went to the quilt guild meeting. I checked on him a few times while I was gone and he was sound asleep when we got back home. Since he was feeling better, hubby decided we needed to go to town yesterday and while the idea of going out in the pouring rain didn't appeal to me, I decided to go along and stop at a few businesses and see about setting up tax-exempt status for PTO purchases. All but one just require a certificate and the other requires everything to be completed online and approved first. Kind of a pain now but should be smooth sailing in the future. Ended up finding more clearance items at Walmart for the PTO, so I guess it wasn't a wasted trip. Today laundry is a priority as well as watering the geraniums that came inside for the winter. Otherwise it will be a putter around here and there sort of day.

Went to Dad's yesterday, came home with 2 more grocery bags of pears, fresh windfalls and much nicer than the last batch. They were falling all around me as I was under the tree, afraid to look up for fear of getting smacked in the face. I was hit by a few, ouch! Also cut a bag of kale, amazingly it's still good and only a few leaves were affected by frost. I even saw a few tiny worms. Came home and froze the Kale. The pears will wait in the garage a few days. Heading to Dad's today if sis goes, brother called her to help with his second and final deer of the season. I'll be "surprise" help. He called sis this time because he told Dad that he calls me for a lot of help. Spread the love I guess! I also gathered up some pint jars from Dad's stash, they don't use them. Only ended up with 9. When I got home went to the junk shop and got 6 more. I refuse to pay $12.97 for a flat of them at Walmart. Besides, I have plenty of seals and rings. They had all clothing half price, so ended up with 3 shirts for me and 1 for DH. Got the test quilt ready for hand quilting, that will wait for cooler weather. Lots on my plate this week, another round of leaf vacuuming, perennial grass and hosta removal in the front yard. And outdoor Christmas lights go up at the end of the week. Stopped by Aldi while I was in the vicinity, had an inkling that they would have poinsettias. Yup. Very nice ones for $3.89! Also Christmas cactus for $4.99. Got 2 poinsettias and gave one to step-mom. Got one of each for me. The one I got last year from Aldi lasted until March. Finally threw it out as I was tired of looking at it.

Yesterday was tamale making day. It's an all day affair, with friends. Once assembled the stove top is busy with tamale pots steaming them for about 3 hours- time for a continued good visit with wine and salsa/guacamole/chips. Then dinner together with the freshly made tamales and more wine. The rest of our share- about 6 dozen-get frozen for quick meals on Tamale Tuesdays.

Only two loads of laundry done yesterday as I got sidetracked organizing the Christmas store stuff that's taking up space in my utility room. Thankfully it's sorted according to price and when I find a free moment (yeah, right) in the next few weeks I'll tackle some of the wrapping. We've set aside two days to wrap and set it up but you never know just how many will show up and help. So today I'm doing laundry again and sorting some fabric for future projects. Except for evening meetings tomorrow and Thursday, I'm completely free the next four days and hope to get some of the outside work tackled. Of course kiddo woke up with a cough and sniffles this morning so plans are subject to change.

My plans changed today. Sis ended up not being able to go to Dad's today, so I didn't go either. So I got busy outside and shredded 8 bags of leaves. The garden is almost covered now. Cleaned up hostas in back yard. Cut down perennial grasses in front. In between all this I was canning chili beans again. Didn't get to hostas on north side of house. Tomorrow is another day. Went for walk.

Using the bucket on the tractor, hubby harvested 3 big scoops from the finished compost pile. Two scoops topped the leaves in the 4 x 8 raised bed that will be onions. The third scoop topped the newly relocated 4 x 4 raised bed. I think it will be melon or squash, because of its proximity to the walnut tree.
I could have spent three days, sifting and moving that compost by hand. The pile looks like there might be two more scoops left.

After my weekly Facetime with my sis, this morning, we met up with a friend and drove to UNM in Albuquerque for the matinee and last performance of "Pippin". Our mutual friend is the professor of theater and directed the play. There were 8 of us there to celebrate the last off the run. Then back to her house , in Santa Fe, for pizza and wine. Got home near 9PM to a very hungry Elie. It was a full and fun day/evening.

After Wednesdays surgery and a couple of days of constant care from sweetheart I thought I was on the road to recovery but Saturday morning proved otherwise. I woke up to a very bloated and sore stomach. Thinking that it was the aftermath of my surgery I was sure it would pass with time but by 4oclock sweetheart had me in the car heading to the ER. Long story short they took out my appendix yesterday afternoon and thankfully we are back home today. I must say that what ever they did to my abdomen muscles it sure causes stabs of pain at the slightest movement. Hopefully Iโm on the road to recoveryโฆโฆ

Canned 11 pints pears this morning. In all my wisdom of doing chili beans yesterday, Iโm out of pint jars again! Have another 10 pints of pears to do. Iโm short 6 jars. Another trip to junk shop or I can put them in quarts.
Outside resting between chores. Just got done cleaning up the last of the hostas. Lawnmower is warming up in the sun. Iโll take a run over the yard for straggler leaves. Beautiful day!! No jacket.
