martywny, do you have a pine straw rake? Hubby has one that attaches to the tractor…it does a pretty good job on corralling pine cones and other small yard debris, but we let the pine needles stay where they fall.

After our usual leisurely morning, went down to the village elementary school and voted. Then did the every 2 week grocery shopping and some other errands. Since the pandemic started, the every 2 weeks has stuck for the major shopping. Now I just add a quick in-between shop on the off weeks. Made up the "winter bed" with the flannel sheets and down comforter, washed and put away the spring/summer/fall bedding, until May.

Had a very nice day today. Went to vote, & then popped into town to enjoy a nice al fresco lunch at a fairly new local branch of a Mexican restaurant where we've enjoyed excellent fare at a couple of their other older locations. Weather was a lovely partly-sunny 78 degrees with a light breeze, which made their lovely umbrella'd patio area very pleasant.
Afterwards did a bit of grocery shopping where I was shockingly able to get everything on my list.
Then we returned home & I did a bit of watering for the plants I moved back outside while we have these few days of very mild temps.

Ended up keeping kiddo home yesterday after all as her eye was still weepy and swollen. Managed to get both of the denim quilts together and the flannel backing for each put aside. Found the Salisbury steak recipe I'd used in the past and made a crockpot full as I'd bought a bulk bag of ground chuck at the store the day before. Leftovers will be vacuum sealed and put in the freezer for a quick meal in the future.
Forgot to add that we did find some roadside treasures Saturday on our way back from dinner. Below the house my late uncle and his last wife lived there was a laundry sink sitting with the garbage and we decided if it was still there we'd grab it for the greenhouse on the way back. Alas it was still there along with a drill press, a few large flower pots, some military bags and a box of primitive decor. I kept the sink and the flower pots and hubby took the rest. There was absolutely nothing wrong with any of it except being a little dirty.
Today I'm leaving early to purchase supplies for a veterans breakfast at school on Thursday and will likely include a trip to the .25 thrift store while I'm out. Do I honestly need anything? No, but I'm starting a few crazy quilt blocks for a demonstration I've been asked to do in early December and maybe something will catch my eye. Plus kiddo has outgrown several of her long-sleeved shirts.

Can you rake them together, somewhat? Another idea is to use one of those reacher/grabber tools (that's what they're called on Amazon). Thank you for the suggestions, gardendmpls. Unfortunately, they don't rake well through the grass. I do have a grabber and have tried it with limited success. The manual method allows me to bend over, fill each hand with 4 or 5 sticks, and toss them in the wheelbarrow, which is quicker. I could also just leave them there to decompose after mowing them but my brain makes me clean everything up, must be a touch of OCD.

binnylou, I never heard of a pine straw rake, I had to look it up. The problem with raking is I have about 6" of grass in that area and the branches get tangled in the grass.

martywny,I do remember that picture, that's why I chose to put this one closer to the house instead of out by the garden in the open. I wanted to be able to get to it without having to walk across the property also. The small greenhouse I have out by the garden has just become a garden storage shed now. That one has held up over the years. A few holes in the plastic, but they can be replaced. This one will be bolted into the concrete too.

We have some cold, wet weather moving in so put some grass and leaf clippings into our compost tumbler and then will mix it up once we get the rain or rain/snow mix. We have had up and down weather, so have been trying to get out and do a few things like cleanup of beds but working around the weather.

Two more trees are down today, one was 18" and one was a scary, twin-trunk monster over 24" in diameter. These are on a shared lot line so I worked with my neighbor in taking them down. I did the cutting and running of equipment, she moved the branches and cleared the work area after the trees were down. Her husband provided an expert opinion since he has more experience than I do but cannot work due to his having leukemia. Our timing was perfect, as little pellets started coming out of the sky about 30 minutes after we finished.

I got all the rest of those SIPs "emptied", ready to cover them. And one of the two, that is made of a type of plastic that has not lasted as long as others, and is starting to crack after 5 or 6 years, so I removed the soil mix out of one - I'll look closer at the other one, but it's doomed too, I think. I broke 2 drip lines - probably due to the cold, early on - I'll put plugs in those tomorrow, since it will be near 70°, and fix them next season.

Blew another big pile of leaves into a corner then vacuumed/crushed the leaves. Got a couple more large black garbage bags full. There's still more falling. Should have a great pile to let sit over winter for leaf mold.
Worked on the last veggie bed- got about 3/4 of the bed fed and mulched. Had to stop as I need a little more coffee grounds to add to this bed. Made a quick trip to the north end of town (closest to us grocery store) to pick up some plant based (non dairy) sour creme. We had a hankering for baked potatoes tonight. In the same shopping center is a Starbucks so I picked up one more trash bag of coffee grounds to finish that last bed. I want one more bag to add to the compost pile for the Spring feed.

Tuesday morning I sent sweetheart off to work at her usual time then did my daily chores once it became light out. Delivered the soup for teacher appreciation day to the school and sent my daughter, who teaches there, a picture of the crockpot that I wanted her to take home. It felt good for the old man to surprise the girl in a positive way. Stopped to see the youngest grandson and his mom for a bit then stopped to see mom and take care of a little problem she had with a shed door. Getting home I cleaned up and got a phone call that the hospital had an opening at 10 o’clock instead of noon as scheduled. Of course I jumped on it. Made the trip to Cedar Rapids to pay my respects and got home about 9pm.
I’m not sure if little sister wanted to support sweetheart or me but she pulled in the driveway about 6:15 this morning and we were off. Everything was going well until the dr explained that the procedure was “high risk” because of taking the old wires out. I’m glad little sister was there. Surgery went well and we made it home by 5pm. My shoulders sore and there is a list of do’s and don’ts to follow for the next couple of weeks. With the weather forecast being favorable for the next couple of weeks I’m second guessing myself as I know sweetheart, aka the warden, will be monitoring everything I do……..
Note: Got a text from my daughter that the soup was wonderful and a couple of the other teachers wanted the recipe! 😁
