Looks like my later sleeping in the morning was a fluke! I'm back to getting up 4-0430. Took a nap already this morning, couldn't get to sleep last night, I think it was because DS is planning a salmon fishing trip for us on Lake Michigan in June. We were chatting about it til 11 pm! Close to putting in reservation. DH is opting not to go, he doesn't think he can ride in the car that far and he'd rather stay home with the dog. He has a strong aversion to taking her to a kennel.
Today I'll be getting the onion trays out and cleaned up. I'm always too busy in the Spring to do that. And give The Princess a bath. I did a thorough job of brushing her last night.
Might be able to walk later, kind of icy this morning. I don't ever recall seeing so many mornings of hoar's frost as we have had this year. Sure is pretty though.

Started the seed inventory today and glad I did since I evidently didn't save any Lillian's Caseload peas last year and only have half a packet left. Discovered Wando peas in the ten cent seed packet haul too. Still need leeks but otherwise have all my onion seed. Have a couple varieties of beans on my Baker Creek list and questioning whether or not I really need them as I already have an abundance. Still need to inventory the herb and flower seed but looks like I'm pretty well set for the year. Also missing the spinach and brassica seed as I think hubby moved them when we were bringing a shelf in. Never did get my seed starting area moved so new heater we bought will go into the dining room to maintain a comfy temperature for seeds. Quizzed mom for the tomatoes she wants this year and she's only wanting six each of four varieties. Determined to devote two beds to paste tomatoes and maybe a few others scattered here and there.
Otherwise I made two meatloaves and started a big pot of chili. I think it was after Thanksgiving when I put a huge package of burger in the freezer because I felt too crappy to deal with it. Well I needed the freezer room and figured it would make a few days worth of meals and still some for the freezer. New quilt class starts Tuesday and it will be challenging as one of the ladies recently passed away. Hubby has a cardiologist appointment the next day and kiddo's dentist appointment is the following day, so lots of traveling this week. I really wanted to start tearing the old building down but looks as if that will have to wait at least another week.

Got up at 0430, drank lots of coffee. Pruned out all of the dead peppers in the greenhouse 🌶 🧊 ☠️. The large raised bed 8x4x3 was looking a bit low, so I added six cubic feet of compost and topped it off with some potting mix and then planted some Baker Creek golden yellow peas. Hopefully the high humidity in the greenhouse doesn’t bother the peas. Sowed a couple 50 cell trays of various kales in the greenhouse to give away to family and friends in a couple weeks when spring is here and everybody starts to want to garden. I grow all of my kale in fall/winter, but a lot of people plant it in the spring because they don’t realize it overwinters here. By April it will be full of caterpillar holes and the leaves will look like Swiss cheese. Sowed some more crimson clover in the front yard. Bought some 4” pots on Amazon (I wish i could find small nursery pots locally!” so I can step up the tomatoes in the grow room that are getting way too big too quickly. Put some bamboo stakes around a few of the raised beds that my puppy has been digging in and ran twine around them to discourage her from using my raised beds as dirt wrestling arenas. Made a big taco salad with lettuces and cilantro from the garden. Cilantro looks like it’s trying to bolt to coriander soon.

. Marty..that will prob bring a visit from the DEA. The son of A neighbor, several doors down was growing an 8 x10’ area of plants that, given the right post rain breeze would perfume the area. Deer were a problem so it was fenced around and topped. If you were growing it, you would smell it..and so would neighbors . In the seventies, my younger brother planted several plants among my moms tomato plants..she tended them for most of the season until they started to bud out..and commented to my elder brother that several tomato volunteers were not fruiting. He said show me. Then he giggled and then howled. And said, you’re growing pot mom..well he was blamed for planting them as the younger brother took off out the front door. We were 9. My poor Mom. She was pissed. Years later she laughed..the plants were 5’ tall among the 4’ tomatoes..threatened to burn plants as she ripped them out..Bob said great, I’ll invite friends over for a campfire…how we lived to become adults, I don’t know.

Bob said great, I’ll invite friends over for a campfire…how we lived to become adults, I don’t know. I remember an occurrence many years ago in a land far away... well it was actually New Bern, NC in the mid-'70s to be more specific. The local constabulary came upon an acre or so of a suspected illegal herb growing at the edge of a soybean field. Granted, planting in a cornfield would have offered better concealment but it's evidently not a subject taught at the local horticulture school. The county sheriff's department made sure everyone knew about the big drug bust and how it was going to be burned next Saturday morning at 9:00 AM, giving plenty of notice to local stations to get their news cameras out there. The deputies and fire department arrived on time and doused the upwind side of the plot with gasoline and tossed several flares into it, causing a large POOF! and the field started burning. Due to the excellent news coverage leading up to the event, several hundred 'observers' immediately came out of the woods and showed up in cars to position themselves on the downwind side of the blaze to practice deep-breathing exercises. It quickly turned into a real free-for-all.

Yesterday with sweetheart at work, this has been her first week back since May, I went to breakfast early. Then I made a trip to my daughter’s house as it was my grandsons 15th birthday. I was really tickled with the card I picked out for him as it would be a real test of his mother’s understanding and patience with me! 😂 But that’s what grandpa’s are for, right? I then got the call that sweetheart’s stepmom had passed away. Cancer is a very evil opponent but at least her pain and suffering is over. Sweetheart and I went to see her dad when she got home. He was a mixture of mourning, relief and uncertainty but was at peace with that she’s suffering no more. On a brighter note sweetheart was impressed with the latest batch of chili I made with the smoked ground beef.

Planted 300 onion seeds this morning, 150 Patterson and 150 Yellow Sweet Spanish. Got the hydroponics going with 3 types of lettuce. Been cutting up water bottles for my "pots". 100 last night and 150 today. I think there's another couple hundred in the garage. Will get the ladder out later and have a look-see.
The season has begun!

I took down all of the outside Christmas decorations today and Cheryl is taking down the tree and inside decorations. 29° outside and windy but at least it wasn't snowing or raining and everything could be put into bins immediately. We discarded a few things that had become unserviceable over the years and are trying to make everything more organized for when the season comes back around again.
I baked a blueberry pie for tonight's dinner, granted it's a frozen Marie Callender pie but I'm still taking full credit for it.

It was a gorgeous day today. While Quinn was installing our new weather station I "puttered " in the gardens. It was in full sun area so I cut back perennials and cleaned up the flower bed in front of the veggie garden, trimmed back the silver lace vine, raked a section of the buffalo grass, and added the dry loose grass to the compost pile Sure felt good to be gardening again!

Last of seeds inventoried and two orders placed. Of course immediately after placing the orders I get a notification that the etsy seller in my state has added skirret, which is something I've wanted to try but never could find a source. Adding to my cart but will wait a week or two and see what other offerings become available. Hoping to start onions next week.
Went into my daughter's classroom in the afternoon and stayed for two meetings after school. We were able to save our Christmas store which means more work for us, but the kids love it. I'd brought a small cabinet home after Thanksgiving and we've been maneuvering around it since. Well I decided that it needed to move to a better destination and at least now it's functional. One of the organizers I moved to make room for it had an assortment of jar rings, lids and plastic caps I've picked up when I've found them in stock over the past year. They are now in the utility room with the jars and I think I'm set for a great harvest year. Remote came for the Bose radio that was in the electronics discard pile and oh we are so in love! Now to decide exactly where it will reside. Found some printable hexagon graph paper online and will attempt to graph out an English paper piecing project I made a few years ago and realized it came out a little wonky. Will be adding more to it to even out the edges and hopefully have some hexis in a bag to stitch on at hubby's doctor appointment tomorrow.

We were all over the place today. Started at Home Depot, hubby didn't find what he needed. Next stop Kohls. I bought a blouse yesterday and when I got home, discovered that the security tag was still on it. Next Aldi, needed milk. They are converting all but 2 checkouts to self check out, what a mess. Stopped for a car wash them hubby wanted to stop at the Goodwill store. He found what he was looking for and I found a beautiful pasta bowl made in Italy for $1.99. Next Menards and found a string of matching Christmas lights to replace the string that burned out. 65% off!! score. Stopped for lunch and when we got home, I took down the deck lights and put up some red and white lights for Valentine's Day. I had a Mumsey, emmsmommy, day. Now have to go pick up granddaughter from bus stop.
