Spent the day at home as kiddo and I am on the mend and now it's hubby's turn again. Mom was thoughtful enough to send pictures of the table loaded with food thoungh. Kiddo wanted pizza and she loves helping me make them too, so that was our main meal today.
Decided to go with old traditions and not do anything perceived as a chore today. Went outside and surveyed the garden and discovered the compost in the bin has broken down enough to use. Back inside I cut a few pairs of kiddo's toddler jeans apart as they had some cute adornments I want to use in another project. Kiddo and I wore the waistbands around our heads while she played her keyboard. Dedicated a new notebook to this year's garden and pulled a few quilt books out and made a list of what needs cut for a few simple quilts. I want to downsize the shirt fabrics before I cut into more shirts and figured that cut out and put together in a bag is better than fabric just sitting in a tote. New quilt class starting next week and I'm not sure if I'll go since I'm still struggling with the final blocks from the last class. My sense of taste has returned and kiddo and I shared the last of the chocolate cookie crumble ice cream. Not the way I'd imagined spending New Year's day, but definitely enjoyable!

I was outside for about 2½ hrs today, to clean up a bunch of stuff, plus covered the last of my SIPs - things I just turned on their sides, to drain, before it got frozen in early December, and kept waiting for it to cool off, which it did occasionally, but then it would rain! It was muddy out there, but I managed to get them all done. It was just over 60°, and by the time I came inside, I was hot, and took my flannel shirt off, and turned the ceiling fan on in my LR, where it felt good to sit down!
Unfortunately, the covered bed with my greens got a big hole in it, and a few small ones, probably from that severe wind last week, blowing branches off that sassafras tree from next door. Many of those trees were in the ground like arrows! Some of those greens had died, but already had new growth! If it hadn't been windy, I would have re-covered it, with some new cover.

Yesterday was pretty much a no chores type of day. Decided against doing laundry as I wanted kiddo and I to enjoy her last day of Christmas break. We sang, we colored and we did a few jigsaw puzzles. I'm really going to miss her not being here during the day but I really need the time to get a few things accomplished. Need to finalize my Baker Creek order and then I should be ready for garden season 2023!

Sunday I went out and took down all the Christmas decorations. Figured it was a good time to do it as rain was forecast, and it started last night. Odd to have rain in January! Toted up everything and yesterday hauled it all back to the storage space. Been working on the under layer of that giant drift on the deck, able to chop away at it since daytime temps have been well above freezing. Just a small area remains. Ice is a heavy shovel load, then I have to toss it over the deck rail without it sliding off the shovel. We have been able to go for long walks last 2 days, at least 2 miles, but stay pretty much uptown where the sidewalks are clear. We just go round and round the blocks, which are true blocks, each trip around one is 1/4 mile.
Finished the scrap Star Step quilt top, have it pretty much figured out, and with my notes I should be able to assemble some order to it. Yesterday I pulled out left over flannel and was playing around with making Chenille potholders. Watched the final episodes of Ozark, and just as I thought, the end was not really an ending, a cliffhanger. They say there will be no more seasons of it.
Need to clean up the basement today, Summer stuff from the garage needs put away. Then I'm sure I will be drawn back to the sewing machine.....

Brought up a bunch more thoroughly-composted wood chips from the massive piles in the back lot --- fine black gold with which to mulch everything. Then the storms started rolling through, so that was it out there for today. Came back in and saw a nice garlic clove on the countertop --- so, as Caesar might have said... "Veni, vidi, edi."

Dental appt this morning. The darn new bridge is loose! I'm not surprised since she had to squirt cement under it due to not being able to take it out and put cement in, then seat it. Hopefully she can get the thing out and cement it properly, or I'm afraid a new one will be required. Their lab made it too perfect, but then it's not perfect if the cement can't be put in the right way..... It has gotten looser over the past few days, now can't chew on that side......Not a happy camper. I've been going to this dentist for 20 years with never an issue.

Just yesterday I was looking at my assortment of Aloe Vera plants thinking they finally are looking good. They had been looking pretty sad. I finally found a spot they liked and are looking great. So today I'm up there moving some empty pots, making room for seed starting supplies. A small pot falls behind the rack. Go to move the rack to pick it up and down comes the biggest Aloe. My fault, it's in a unstable pot, but I wasn't planning on moving anything. Clean up the dirt, not too much damage to the plant, lost a baby. Put it back on the shelf, go to move rack back, it falls again. Just wasn't thinking. Cleaned up dirt, couple of leaves broke, but not too bad. Put the rack back in place, refilled pot with dirt and then tied the pot to the rack post. It's not going anywhere anymore until I decide. So mad at myself.

datgirl , I do that kind of thing all the time, where one issue snowballs into another, 'cause I'm just plain ol' clumsy. Hope your aloe is okay.

Spent the morning finishing up end of year records. Another cold , windy day with very little sun, so no work outside. Several indoor projects to choose from but... ugh...just not motivated to tackle those; does not sound like fun. At all. I'm going to start planning next years' garden instead.

First morning in a week or so that I've felt like doing anything. Was going to work on final quilt blocks from the last class I took but evidently when I cleaned off the card table I put the pattern in a super secret spot that I haven't been able to locate yet. So I decided to go put up a shelf in the shed. The screw heads were too big for the brackets I intended to use but found some others that worked. Still have six bags of pro mix out there and rearranged them so they would be easily accessible. Did a little more organizing and called it good. Hubby was outside when I came back and I suggested we cut the branches off the locust trees the timber guy uprooted for us. Well we got two of them cut into posts before the chainsaw ran out of gas. It looked like rain so I told hubby we'd try and pile the cherry branches from another removed tree onto the burn pile too. Got that job finished and spent some time looking for signs of the peony I'd forgotten was amongst those locust trees. Found some uprooted bulbs but will definitely have to watch for the buds as it warms up. Got a call at 3:00 saying that kiddo wasn't feeling good. She was fevered when she got off the bus and has had diarrhea so I'm guessing this is round 2...3...4 (?) of the stomach flu and she's staying home tomorrow.

I went shopping at 4 places today, which I almost never do! I usually go places when they open, like Aldi's, which I did today, then today I had to pick up a prescription at Acme, where I also got a dozen eggs for $2.84, the cheapest I have seen them in months! Plus another item less than half price, with one of those digital coupons. Later, I went to Job Lots for 2 of their coupon items, plus a few others, and they have their Burpee rack up, 40% off, as always. On the way home, when I saw there was no traffic, I went into town and got a few things at the Mexican grocery store.
On the way home, something unusual (fortunately) happened. A bunch of police cars passed, with lights and sirens on, going down the street I'm going on, and a fire truck and ambulance comes from the other direction, so I tried another street, to avoid the mess. Later, I heard what it was - someone down a side street got shot and killed! And here I thought there was a fire somewhere.

Today we took a break from normal and visited the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Darwin Martin house in Buffalo. Martin was an executive for the Larkin soap company, a prominent manufacturer headquartered in Buffalo. He commissioned Wright to design the house and associated buildings and long story short, it recently underwent a $52 million dollar renovation. We took a private tour and it was absolutely amazing to venture into the mind of such an eminent visionary through one of his most notable creations. Before our tour, I went and checked out their greenhouse, it's a working greenhouse there to support the grounds and the landscape crew. martinhouse.org/ if you want to have a virtual look.

Ordered seeds last night and Baker Creek has already shipped. Ordered the most from them (33 pkts) as most of the seeds were $3.00. Usually I get the most from Pinetree and Fedco (about the same number from each), but this year Fedco had a lot of seeds listed in their catalog as "check on-line". Most of those are still not available. Total packets ordered from 6 companies was 119, up from last year, as I had tossed a lot of older, non-germinating seeds. Added a lot of flowers. They were very successful last year and I want to expand the flower spaces. Got a lot of Asian greens and added in broccoli, which I haven't grown for a while due to aphids. Will be buying row covers or netting and giving it another try. Did not get anything from Johnnys (prices way too high) or Park (prices also greatly inflated). May start saving more of my own seed this year.

My seeds have been ordered! Okay, I lied, my first round of seeds has been ordered. I've had shopping carts for the past week and decided to get the orders placed before my selections are sold out. I checked the catalogs and websites, added some more seeds and planting trays, then checked out. Baker Creek, Johhny's and Urban Farmer are where I bought from today. Everything I wanted was in stock! Time to hurry up and wait.
