Hard to believe a week ago the temperature was -8. Right now it's 57 and I was out sweeping up leaves from the front walk. Filled the bird feeder and emptied the compost bucket into the compost pile. Put a few of the Christmas decorations away, not ready to put it all away yet. Will wait till after the new year. As much as I want warm weather, 57 in December is crazy.

Headed to the big city this morning. You would think there's another blizzard coming. PEOPLE. EVERY. WHERE. !! Went to Walmart, believe it or not there was not one can of peas on the shelf! Then to JoAnn to get new rotary cutter blades and thread. Then to Aldi, couldn't believe they were out of Chocolate Almond Milk! Stopped at Walmart on the other end of town on my way out for the almond milk and peas, they had no shortage of canned peas. Went to Brown's Shoe Fit for new shoes, didn't care for their selection of Brooks Glycerin. And the customer service was nil....not like them, they have always had excellent service! Went to Scheel's and found some. Sticker shock since last year, but my feet have to be happy. . Got gas on the way out of town at Kwik Star, $2.88 today. Went in to get bread and noticed eggs are $4.99/dz. And eggs are not plentiful at Aldi or Walmart. Less than 1/3 of their usual supply. Came home and put everything away, went to the store and cashed in Lottery scratch tickets. We only do those at Christmas, $105 richer. LOL. Went to the junk shop, BOGO free on all shirts/tops. Got 2 nice hooded, zipper sweatshirts and 2 flannel shirts. Then took The Princess for a walk. Came home and tackled the giant drift on the deck, 2.5 ft deep in the center. Impossible to shovel, so I got the spade and sliced it up in blocks/chunks, picked them up and tossed them over the railing. That was pretty easy! Princess ran like a crazy dog while I was doing that, she navigated all the drifts and got herself cleaned off from all the road muck. We will both sleep well tonight.

Landline has been out for a few days so I walked into the field long enough to make a call today and discovered that I can put off the town trip until morning. Kiddo is much improved and I actually managed to sleep last night. I have a friend who works at the Dollar Tree/Family Dollar a few miles away and she sent me photos of the new fat quarters they'd just got in and I asked her to hold six for me. Actually the fabric quality is pretty good for the price. Did manage to take the empty present totes to the utility room and fill them with jeans inventory and still have a laundry basket full. Hubby has yet to bring the unsold shirts back to the house as he's against me donating them. I keep telling him we've had most of them prior to COVID and if they haven't sold in the last two years, they need to go. Of course I'll pull any 100% cotton ones out that strike my fancy.

I fixed the screen door that almost blew off my back porch, late Friday, when I was getting that 50-60 mph wind. I'm surprised that it wasn't blown off, but the frame was bent, and I couldn't close it, so I pushed it as shut as I could get it, and put 2 heavy tubs of salt against it, then waited until that cold went away, to fix it! It was up to at least 50° today, and no wind at all, which is what I was waiting for. It wasn't easy for me to handle that door, esp. with a bad shoulder, but after a few tries, I took off the two windows and large screen (duh...should have done this first!), and it was much lighter, plus I could reach through it! I had to get something from the workshop to bend that small section, which worked well, but the door still didn't fit into the section. Finally, I removed the thin (about 3/16") spacer wood, that I had to make, when I first installed it, and it barely fits! I have no idea what shrunk the area. After getting screen and windows back in, and the retractor, the last thing I had to re-connect was the spring chain, or whatever the name is for it - probably the thing that kept the door from being blown off, and the retractor from being bent. It just has a little connector, using 2 screws into the upper door jamb, and I knew exactly where I put them, since it was right where I could get it when re-connecting it. Of course, it wasn't there, or on the floor, or anywhere around that I could see! It was getting dark, so I gave up...maybe it's outside, and tomorrow I'll look in the light! I gathered all the tools, and screws, and took them downstairs to put away. And guess where I found that connector? On the bottom of a magnetic dish I had all those screws in! At least I found it, and I took it, the screws, and the drill/screwdriver up, and attached it immediately; otherwise, I might loose it again!

Surprisingly, I actually took a day off working in the garden yesterday! I slept in until almost 8 and then spent the day sitting in a tree hoping I could add some protein 🦌 to my harvest so I won’t just have to eat cabbage and collards for New Years dinner. No luck though, greens it is. Probably going to get a truckload of compost this morning.

Got that truckload of certified organic compost. It was steaming hot and very well sieved, nice and fine, dark, molasses smell. It is a very high carbon compost so I always have to amend with nitrogen, but it’s only $40 per cubic yard and they gave me two cubic yards yesterday for $40. About broke my truck. Got a flat tire on the way home. Had to shovel out all 28 wheelbarrow loads in an hour because thought rain was coming yesterday.

raphanus, I wish we had something like that available here. Our county does have a composting facility but the city uses it in its gardening and planter projects. So I guess when we are enjoying the beautiful display of flowers in the warmer months, we should be happy that it's at a reduced cost to taxpayers.

Made the trip to town yesterday and it started out rather interesting. About a mile after driving on the main road we heard a questionable sound and after stopping, we assumed that kiddo had thrown her shoe in the back and hit the cooler as we could find no other explanation. Approximately 8 miles later hubby suddenly started grabbing for his iPad which was not by the seat where he keeps it. He remembered he put it on top of the car and sure enough the case was there against the roof rack minus the iPad. I insisted we go back and pray it hadn't been run over and I spotted it on the berm and got out to get it. Well it has a pretty good dent in the back and half the screen is busted but amazingly it still works. My old one is the same model and is useless after Apple disabled it after I'd been hacked, so after he backs up all his accounts I may be performing surgery. I only got out of the car twice after getting to town and that was to drop off paperwork and help bubby load the thrift store electronics. I sent hubby into the other thrift store where he grabbed another tote a pair of jeans for me, some five cent Christmas clothes for kiddo and 25 cent CDs and DVDs as they are tossing the remaining inventory and starting fresh with the new year. When we picked up the electronics we were surprised to see a Bose Wave radio and CD changer add-on. It was pretty filthy and figured it was destined for the parts pile but amazingly it works and sounds amazing! The remote was missing and I found one on eBay, so now we wait. We're both inclined to keep it for ourselves. Hubby also did the grocery shopping and remembered the toilet paper this time. Unfortunately by bedtime the dreaded cough decided to make an appearance and it was another night of little sleep. Told mom this morning that dinner tomorrow is likely out of the question for us as I'm not going to risk getting them sick.

Started taking some of the Christmas decorations down. Tree's are still up with the manger. Those will stay up until Jan 7,after Epiphany. Rearranged some boxes in the basement to make room for Christmas boxes. Threw some stuff out and have some I will have to wait until garbage day. Feels good to get rid of things you know you really don't need. Wonder why we've kept some of it as long as we did. After church, will throw a steak on the grill and making baked potatoes for New Years eve dinner. Staying in, starting a fire in the stove and watch TV. Started watching Wednesday on Netflix. Not sure if I like it enough to finish all 8 episodes.
Happy New Year!!

I did a hideous solo last-minute grocery trip this morning. Was hoping to find oysters for "Oysters Rockefeller" tonight, but no luck. But did score a nice sale on extra-large shrimp, so it'll be Shrimp Cocktails instead, as a precedent to our traditional "grazing" menu for New Year's Eve.

Transplanted yet another Premier blueberry into the main grove. I gots six bushes going now. I'm happy, the dogs are happy (they like blueberries), and the birds are rejoicing...we've all agreed to share. Happy New Year's Eve to all!

Spent the better part of the day closing out bookkeeping for 2022, (3 sets), and took a 2 1/2 mile walk at the warmest part of the afternoon- it was a bit windy but warm enough (around 50º) to make it bearable.

raphanus, We have a nice compost area in our little town, but it's self serve. You want it, you load it and the best part it's free! Only for residents of our town.

Spent half the day at Dad's with sis, nice catching up with her. She loved her frog rag quilt! She gifted me a gallon bag of dehydrated sweet peppers. Great for snacking. Helped step mom with a comforter, a cheap one that the batting was rearranging itself along the sides. That's because it was cheap, but new. So I sewed around the entire thing about 2" in from the edges. Problem solved. Used her old Riccar sewing machine, it works good though! Dad said all I do when I come there is work, asked him where he thought that came from??? ;). Was raining when I headed home, but temp was 34* so nothing freezing.
Watched some of the Music Bowl there, the Hawkeyes skunked Kentucky! Pooped by the time I got home. Got into a marathon binge of Ozark at 4 pm. Watched til midnight! I'll be having a nap today.
I'll be making the eggs Benedict with hash browns today for brunch.
