I'm not signed up for Notifications so I never get them. Is anyone else, who is signed up, not receiving Notifications? Proboards Support is closed today (still in Holiday mode) so they won't be able to trouble shoot until tomorrow. gardendmpls binnylou I think you are signed up for Notifications. Are you getting them?

We lost cable entirely along w power for the first time in decades. The cable company sent notice that they had central transfer stations go out in NY as well as lower Fairfield county that effected us in the NW CT area. Perhaps that was the problem?

Checked over all my settings here. Am getting notifications from other sites. It's nice to walk by the computer and see right there that there were postings and go right to them. Now I have to find my group email, log in and then look at each forum list to see what's been posted. Just another bit of time out of my day.

Tomorrow will be day 4 of being snowed in, travel bans are being lifted and much of the mess will be cleaned up tomorrow. There have been 27 fatalities attributed to this storm, exposure, not being able to get to medical facilities, snow shoveling/ heart attack deaths.
The neighbor and I cleared out another neighbor today with our loaders, their plow service could only make it 10' up the driveway. I cleaned up my driveway and parking area when I got back home, then refitted the chains on my tractor. Our snow total was 42" and drifts were over 5' between the house and garage. I tried walking through it yesterday, got about 6' and then had to crawl the rest of the way to the garage, I think I am too old to crawl through snowdrifts. About 8" more on the way.
We have not lost power, only Spectrum TV is out, we do have an antenna connected for TV service, no problems with Internet. I will be glad to see the end of this one.

I think I am too old to crawl through snowdrifts. I think you should look into building a covered walkway between the house and the garage. Remember seeing one between the stables and the house at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. Actually, he had hidden walkways from the servant's and slave's quarters and the house, so they could go up and back without being seen and so that they and the food and other items they carried would not be exposed to the weather. This was unusual, as most people back then placed the servants/slaves quarterssome distance from the main house. Anyway, a protected walkway might enable you to reach your equipment without crawling, which sounds very unpleasant.

Now THAT'S what I need, even without the snow! I was sitting here thinking about an old neighborhood and school-days friend and fishin' buddy whom I hadn't heard from in almost twenty years...and out of the blue he called me, and we yammered for two hours. Made my day. He has since taken up guitar in a big way, plus he and his wife started gardening some years ago. Now they've graduated to farming --- acres of corn, squash, tomatoes, and soybeans, plus a stable of horses. "Old friends...they shine like diamonds..."

You did get me thinking, though, if I had the opportunity to design my place from scratch, what exactly would I do?

I hope you are all alright & at least managed to have a merry Christmas. I hear America has been having some really bad weather. I heard on Sky News the other day that a cold bomb or something like that was hitting in some parts of America with Montana reaching -45Β°C. I've worked in 45Β°C before & that was bad enough trying to work with sweat dripping off of you & that was bad enough. I think I would definitely battle to survive in negative high temperatures.
Back in the days when I was young, I used to be jealous of all the countries that had a white christmas & we never had one here in South Africa. After seeing all this, now I'm actually glad we have never had a white christmass.
Here in South Africa the rains have been a blessing us this December & the weather has barely gone over 30Β°C. I definitely planted way too many tomatoes though. My partner is swearing at me as she doesn't know what to do with them all. We've made tomato paste, tomato sauce, tomato herb ice cubes. Birds have been peeing we off though with only taking a peck or two out of my tomatoes & then leaving it to gather Miggies (I thin the English word for Miggies is gnats but I'm not sure), so my compost heap is also full of tomatoes. My Basil has also taken off with 15 plants around my garden. I have also had some nice pumpkins this year but the pumpkin fly is getting a bit much now so I've pulled my pumpkin plant. The only thin I haven't been able to grow is thyme. I managed to get one plant growing but when I planted it out it died. The electrical company Eskom have really messed up our grid & it seems to be off more than it is on with the diesel generators continiously breaking down & coal getting wet. It feels like we have reverted back to the 13th centuary. People who can afford it are breaking away from the grid & converting their house to solar power. I've will be buying an inverter generator as soon as I can find one available.
Well I hope the weather warms up a bit by you all & you at least have a pleasant New Year.

warren, Yes, it has been the Storm of the Century, or Storm of a Generation, or Bomb Cyclone. Whatever, it was the worst I've ever seen! Still digging out.

Christmas was good, the weather cooperated enough for DS to get here Saturday afternoon. And Sunday morning was OK too, so after breakfast we went to Dad's. Then DS left when we got back as more snow was moving in. We did our usual thing, Christmas Eve dinner, scrabble, Manheim Steamroller, then eggs Benedict for Sunday breakfast. I made them a bit differently and it was awesome. Did some hash browns in the oven, when they were done, put eggs on top and back to the oven for a few minutes. Topped with grated cheddar and hollandaise sauce. Way easier than the old way. And it was a hit.
Other than that, been working on quilt pattern writing, which includes making the quilt again to be sure I've got it all right. I'm using scraps for that and each block is a different color theme.
Most of snow removal is done except for the deck. Our snow guy usually has 3 teenagers to help, but with Christmas they have been unavailable. Told him as long as we can get in and out it can wait til later in the week. There will be no running and playing with The Princess this Winter, the yard is masses of snow drifts!

Birds have been peeing we off though with only taking a peck or two out of my tomatoes & then leaving it This is what happens when they don't have ready access to water. They peck the tomato for a quick "drink". Try putting out a shallow pan of water (out of reach of cats) and see if that helps. You might want to dry some extra tomatoes. The smaller ones make good snacks. I also grind up dried tomatoes and use as an add in to stews, soups, eggs and other foods for nutrients and flavor.

mumsey- sounds like a nice quiet evening, I am glad you enjoyed it. I've never heard of Manein Stramroller before but their music sounds quite nice especially if you want a nice quiet evening. Eggs Benedict is also new to me but it sounds delicious. I definitely want to give it a try. Christmas breakfast we had fried bacon, eggs, tomato & banana & for lunch we had a braai with salads made from vegetables from our garden. In the evening we listened to U2, Metalica & had a few beers. Our evening aren't really hot but are getting very humid, (something we are not used to here in Gauteng) so we still need to cool our house down before we can go to sleep.
