Had a message yesterday morning from a woman that I knew had been kiddo's substitute aide a few weeks ago letting me know that she would also be working with her yesterday. Met her in the hall while I was at school and I absolutely love her and do does kiddo. She's still working her regular job part-time but told me if ever there was an issue with getting a sub to contact her as she could easily juggle her schedule. We set up the Christmas store and oh my! The parent in charge really went the extra mile and we have quite the selection for little shoppers. Since today is the first day, it will likely be hectic but I'm hoping to have enough time to meet kiddo's new aide when she brings her to shop. Everything should be over by noon and I'm coming back home in an attempt to start packing and gathering all the paperwork I'll need for our trip Friday. Also have two ornaments to paint and get in the mail Friday too. Perused the Baker Creek WSC again and am simply amazed! I'll be taking the damaged copy with me today and presenting it to a fellow parent and gardening neighbor who I think will be delighted!
Looking forward to some down time in the next few weeks. I'll continue to go into the class two days a week as scheduled but if there's adequate volunteers for library, I'll probably skip a week or two and concentrate on stuff around here.

Made our bi-weekly trip to Albuquerque. That always ends up taking most of the afternoon with drive time (80 minutes one way).. Got home in the dark (have I mentioned how much I dislike these short days of daylight hours ) Still haven't been able to get out in the yard to do Fall clean up and rake the last of the leaves. It really might be one of those years where the Fall clean up happens in the Spring, though it's making me a bit edgy seeing all the pine needles and leaves piled up in places where they are doing no good.

Went to Dad's yesterday, kind of an unplanned trip. I wanted to re-gift to step mom her Christmas Cactus that I took home 2 years ago. I babied it and it has performed beautifully! She had gotten it about 5 years before and never put it in a proper pot with new soil. She couldn't believe it was the same plant! Also took Dad the Whole Seed Catalog, left him a note that I want it back when he's done with it..
Headed on to town to pick up odds and ends since weather is expected to turn today and tonight. Stopped by Natural Grocers and got free-range eggs for $1.99, they have been this price for a couple months. You have to be an N-Power member to get that price (like a discount program). Aldi eggs were $4.13 yesterday! We can continue to see high egg prices, there are more chicken farms in Iowa with bird flu.
Went to the junk shop here in town and scored several flannel sheets for rag quiits. Very nice, look nearly new! Name brands too, and king size! I'm liking the change of pace on quilts, these rag ones go together fast. I'll do a couple more then get busy on a regular quilt again.
Went for 2 mile walk, I see those walks becoming shorter as the weather becomes more Winter-like.

Mumsey,Out of curiosity, what do you do with all the quilts you make?

I'll do a couple more then get busy on a regular quilt again. I am wondering if rag quilts were once the regular quilts, made quickly and efficiently, and the fancier quilts were for those who could afford the time and materials.

So I took the damaged Baker Creek catalog with me this morning and gifted it to another parent at school who was overjoyed. This afternoon I stopped at the store where she worked and she pointed to the catalog on the counter behind her. The part of the catalog she'd had time to peruse was riddled with Post-it flags of things she wanted to order. I don't think I could have found a better home for that catalog.
Tomorrow is the last day of our Christmas store and while we do not do it for or expect a profit, we've already exceeded our costs by $400 with another day to go. Unfortunately this will probably be our last year doing it as our new principal has found fault with just about everything concerning it. We've also lost another volunteer this week. I'll be signing kiddo out of school an hour or so early and we'll begin our journey ro the sleep study center two hours away. Mom is going along and I told her I'd pay for her hotel room as I'll be staying with kiddo. When she is discharged Saturday morning, I plan to go back to the hotel and shower before we head back. I want to at least stop at Hobby Lobby and Joann's on the way back as Walmart has been out of quilt batting for over a month now. Plus the Joann store is going out of business and there's a few things I want to look for too.

I went to the Amish market, in Mullica Hill today - first time since maybe the spring. A friend called me up, to see if I might need anything from there, and there were a good number of things I thought of quickly, so he came over and got me, and took me down there, instead of getting it for me. A couple of things were barely more expensive than Amazon, so I just got them there, but several were considerably cheaper, which surprised me. I got the Merckens chocolate, that I use to spread on the bottoms of some cookies - the only dark chocolate that I've used that doesn't melt on my hands. Also stocked up on some dark rye flour, as well as almost a lb of caraway - I just ordered a gallon of blackstrap online, which is much cheaper ($21/gal, vs. $32/qt locally), and free shipping! The last gal lasted me over 2 years.

datgirl, Some of them are gifted, some are hanging on walls, some on beds, some for couch lap quilts, some are window treatments. I rotate them throughout the year. I have never tried to sell them due to the high cost of hand quilting (physical labor) and I'd rather keep them than sell at a loss.

Started a second rag quilt, this one is a replica of the US flag. Total of 11 hours in it so far, time consuming to cut out the required 700+ blocks. Much easier than the first one because I had a plan!
Went for 2 mile walk, wind was cold but we braved it!

I’ve been haunted by coughing, headache and stuffed up nose the last couple of days and it’s lingering on this morning. Will need to talk with sweetheart this morning about canceling our plans to have my daughter’s families and mom over for a early Christmas get together. I don’t need to be passing this on to the rest of the family.

Mumsey,I have a friend that used to sell her quilts and she said the same thing. Between the hours of quilting and the materials and then people balking at the price she was asking, she just quit selling them. Luckily I have one she made when Rowan was born 6 years ago. centralilrookie, that cough is the worst. Hope you feel better soon.

When I have sold things I've made, I didn't try to factor in all my hours because, as you said, it makes an item astronomically priced for most people. The way I look at it is the hours I put in are for my pleasure and the creative energy boost I receive. Then it doesn't matter, as I don't see it as a loss.. As long as my materials were covered and some of my time, I was happy. Mumsey , datgirl ,

I'm sorry you are struggling with that cough centralilrookie, They can be so intense. If you want to try something that is free...at the base of your throat, right in the center, there is an indentation between the bones. There is an acupuncture point there, for coughs. You could try pressing on that spot with a finger and hold it for a while, which usually slows/stops the cough. .You do have to keep repeating but it has worked to give me some relief.

Today was our annual Xmas-tree trek.
First we drove down to Orange, VA to the volunteer fire department down there where we normally buy our tree, only to find just a handful of trees left. They looked lovely, but we almost had a heart attack when we were told they were. . . . $175 each!!!! (Last year they were $70.) And they weren't any larger than the trees we've gotten there before (7'-8'). The guy tried to tell us that selling these trees are all the money the fire department gets for the whole year as funding, but really??!!?? He also made the mistake of letting us know that they started out with 400 trees. Well, that's a pretty nice chunk of change for just selling Xmas trees.
So then we drove back up to Culpeper & stopped in at our local Lowe's, where all the trees were $79.99 & some of them - one in particular - were fairly nice & of decent size (7'-8'). But we decided to go over to Warrenton anyway & check out a private nursery + The Home Depot there. The independent nursery had tiny trees (just a little over 5') for $100 each (!!!); Home Depot had the same trees as Lowe's, but not as nice.
So back to Lowe's Culpeper we went, only to arrive just in time to see someone else buy the tree we had liked best. That has happened to us SO many times with both Xmas trees & nursery trees that I don't know why we continue to "check around" when we find something remotely suitable. I nearly bust out laughing at the Murphy's Law aspect of it, but Mr. Breezy did not look amused, so I held my tongue. So we bought the next best tree (which is quite nice & certainly large enough), & I also managed to find an extremely nice large mixed-greens wreath with nice rustic decorations for $10 less & nicer than Home Depot.
So, nice door wreath is hung, & tree is awaiting Step #2 - maybe this weekend.
