Has anyone started dinner plate dahlias inside in the spring to get a headstart on the season? By the time I would need to plant them in the spring in the ground after the frost period they don't bloom very long before they have to be dug out and put in the garage.
I wonder if a cold frame would get them started.
LA, when do you plant your dahlias where you are?

The king tut adds some great interest to the flower gardens. I really like it. Good luck collecting seed. You probably know this trick...paper under the seed heads. You could shake them and have the seeds collect on the paper.

I started my dahlia unwins in the house 1/17.
I just looked at my calendar. I started them as soon as I received the seed from pinetree.
I planted out in early May. I had potted them up 2 times before I set them out.

These unwins I started from seeds, will be tubers when I dig them up and store them for the winter, and I will start the tubers in pots 2/1/2016 under lights, if they store well.
Share a pic of your dinner plate dahlias, that are out there right now.

I have a couple tubers I am going to try starting indoors this winter. I had one last year and couldn't find it in the spring so that may not even work next winter and I have a couple someone gave me but I will probably order a couple as well so I was trying to decide when I would order them for the winter indoor planting.

lilolpeapicker, I just dug up 4 dalhias in a garden bed at the end of the driveway. Goodness, they are huge. I'll never be able to start them inside in the spring. What was I thinking? hahahaha Well, I started them from seed and this was my first time, so I wasn't thinking AT ALL, when I chatted. Had to dig them out because they died off. The ones in the urns and out front are fine and still growing and flowering. Not sure what was up with those 4. Pic of tuber. They are a foot across. I'd need a huge pot, just for one! EEK!

I see you certainly do it that way. Those are from one of the dahlias? But It is my understanding that they can be separated. I am going to order some in November or December. I was checking out some gardening sites to see when they deliver. But I will be doing the tubers I think. You do great from seed. I am not so good.

I'm not going to try and separate.
I put them in the shed to dry enough so that I can get off a bit more dirt.
And then store in dry potting soil, I think.
I am going to plant the WHOLE clumps in the ground next year.
All this is subject to change. hahahahah
