yeatster, OK, we do the best we can with what we have to work with. Just plant and enjoy. Please share your experience. We love to hear what others are doing.

Can anyone tell the difference between beefsteak and cherry tomato, before they fruit? I slacked on labeling.

Can anyone tell the difference between beefsteak and cherry tomato, before they fruit? I would expect a difference in appearance at the seedling stage. The stalk of beefsteak should be thicker than the stalk of cherry. There should be a difference in leaves -- probably thicker leaves on the beefsteak. The beefsteak may have more of a potato leaf while the cherry is finely cut. If you examine the seedlings carefully, I think you will see a difference.

yeatster, The cherry will probably be the first to ripen. Then you will know which ones they are.

yeatster , It looks like some sucking insects or mite has been on some of those leaves (on the June 7th pictures). I'm not sure what. It could be scale insects, thrips, spider mites or something. Do you see any other signs of any of those pests? Did the problem go away?

Can anyone tell the difference between beefsteak and cherry tomato, before they fruit? I slacked on labeling. I haven't often noticed much of a difference until they get bigger. The flowers of beefsteaks sometimes (although not always) get huge (almost like dandelions), and they can sometimes get interesting stems like multiple stems joined. Here's a picture of a large flower (not the best picture, but it's what I have right now; the flower I mean doesn't show the yellow part much in the picture; it's in the center) and one of the stems I meant (of a beefsteak tomato in my garden today): The pictures are from a Brandy Boy cross.

Do you see any other signs of any of those pests? Did the problem go away? I had the same line of thinking but had it been thrips or mites I think it would be much worse now. All seem perfectly healthy now. Thank you!
