when did you start the seeds off? I didn't. I always buy my cabbage and cauliflower seedlings at the local greenhouse. I have limited space under my lights and I save that for tomatoes and peppers which are varieties that I can't buy. I buy Golden Acre cabbage and Amazing cauliflower and am very happy with those varieties. You can definitely grow nice cabbages but you NEED row covers. You can see what mine look like and I didn't do a thing to them except cover them up the day I planted the seedlings and water maybe twice in the last 2 months.

next year, I will do it!
I haven't had much luck with those types of starts at the stores here in chicago, price and quality and timing. You could buy a head of cauliflower for the price of the start, and I'm not the kind to pay that much, lol!
I will definitely do a better job with the FRC. I did do it previously, but then something went wrong and they got underneath. I'll be much more careful and develop better materials, weights, etc.
Maybe I can do a fall batch? I think one of my books mentions planting for fall cabbages....maybe specific types are for fall? I will investigate.

I can buy a 4-pack of starts for $1.18 so it's hardly worth growing my own!
I usually grow a Fall crop so let's do it together.
I want to grow a couple of heads of red cabbage this Fall as well as a 4-pack of Brussels sprouts. I have a recipe I like that is red cabbage and Brussels sprouts sautéed in olive oil that is really good.
I don't put the Brussels sprouts under covers because they get so big but I had good luck spraying with bt last year.
I use bricks for my weights for the row covers and they work really well with being flat.

I usually grow a Fall crop so let's do it together. Yes! I am on a roll garden wise! I'm confused as to why I'm making so much progress this year, as I had many early weekends that were devoted to paper writing for school, or inclement weather prevented me... Well - I guess I learned a few valuable lessons....one being, never ever ever weed out an area, and not plant and/or cover it up! And - I've spent a bit of money this year too - lots of mulch and those paper bags. I can't wait for Saturday!!!!
