I use a clean almond butter jar...plop it over the leaf and place my hand underneath until I can close it. The sides of the jar kinda enlarge it a bit so that I can see it better.

I ordered a butterfly net when Japanese beetles showed up, as the chickens think they make great snacks. The first one I caught was covered with some sort of parasitic mite, so I let it go so it could spread them to its buddies.. Caught a few more beetles, but the next day they were gone.

Sorry. The beetles just up and left. Don't know why. Sounds like a country/blues song:
My beetles up and left me Just left me standin' here So I'll sit up in my pickup truck And have me another beer.
My beetles up and left me Don't know how, don't know why Ain't got me no more beetles Don't think I'm gonna cry.
My beetles up and left me Maybe ran off to Japan At least that's where they come from Gonna open another can
You can continue this if you want. I'm going to take a nap. Composing takes so much out of you. ;)

You could hear the whistle blow 500 miles................ Teardrops fell on Momma's note, when she read the words I wrote................... There's no Jap beetles here, they got ate up.....by some parasitic mite. I have no evidence that the mites did the deed but well...............

We have something like that up here in ct. Tiny red spiders. Most of the time I just hose them down if I'm harvesting and don't want to take them inside. I figure they are eating some pest I would like even less.

I was looking at garlic on different websites, and noticed on Pinetree seeds, that their garlic is grown in soil tested: free of garlic bloat nematode. Well, I never heard of this, so more googleing ensued: extension.umd.edu/GarlicBloatNematodeYuck, hope I never see this crap.

This is one reason I would never plant store garlic.

Thanks for posting this. I rotate my garlic every year anyway. This year I guess I will have to cough up the cash to buy from somewhere safe, although they did say there was not currently a certification program in place.

Garlic? I finally found one that would do well in this climate and I just propagate it from year to year. I have brought no other garlic into my garden for years. No problems with disease nor pests. I don't know for sure what kind it is, but it looks like the pictures of Music I see online. I suggest, find one that works for you and then always keep enough for planting next year. Stick with it.

Bugs? Not a bug crawling in my garden today. Why? 32 degrees!

Bugs? Not a bug crawling in my garden today. Why? 32 degrees! That's because they are sleeping below ground waiting for Spring!

I have two questions folks. My Brussels sprouts are still growing but more than half of them are skeletonized. Cabbage moths, I assume. I havn't seen any adults because of the week of frosts we had earlier. I've covered w frc, moved to a different bed, inter planted to no avail. Any other ideas? Also, I'm wondering if thes pests over winter in the bed I'm growing them in and what could I do now to disrupt them before next growing season? Thanks.
