I spend a lot of time looking for squash bug eggs on the underside of leaves. Last year I had all the pumpkins and gourds in one area outside the garden so it was easy to keep an eye on them. Killed quite a few by being in the right place at the right time. I kept the zucchini plant covered until flowers bloomed then just kept checking plant. The two plants finally succumbed, but by that time I had harvested quite a few zucs. I do start them a little later in the season too.
